Israeli airstrikes have so far killed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/israeli-workers-threaten-not-to-repair-power-in-gaza-until-bodies-of-soldiers-return-1.9826004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 230 Palestinians<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/middle-east\/gaza-death-toll-from-israeli-attacks-rises-to-230-including-65-children\/2246988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including 65 children<\/a>, and injured 1,710 others. The heavy bombardment has also wiped out entire residential buildings and houses, leaving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/un-there-is-no-safe-place-in-gaza-72000-people-displaced-668489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">72,000 people<\/a>\u00a0homeless, and has destroyed media offices, schools,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Omar_Gaza\/status\/1394848723281264640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">libraries<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stevesosebee\/status\/1394742473067573260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0(IAF), on Wednesday night Israel fired 120 missiles in the span of 25 minutes. The most recent attack hit the city of Khan Yunis in Gaza, killing one and injuring eight. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) could not provide an exact number of how many bombs are being dropped on Gaza per hour. The IAF did not respond to press inquiries. The<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Timesofgaza\/status\/1392986128022708229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<i>Times of Gaza<\/i><\/a><i>,<\/i>\u00a0however, reported that more than 100 airstrikes occurred in a 30 minute period on May 14.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the rubble, Palestinians in Gaza have found unexploded missiles with writing indicating these bombs were manufactured in the United States. The use of American-made weaponry in Israel\u2019s latest assault on Gaza is renewing discussions on U.S. foreign assistance to Israel and U.S. complicity in Israeli state violence.<\/p>\n<h2>Corporate complicity<\/h2>\n<p>On his Twitter page, Muhammad Shehada, Gazan writer and analyst manager at Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, wrote Israel struck the Al-Jalaa Tower, which housed the\u00a0<i>Associated Press<\/i>\u00a0bureau and\u00a0<i>Al Jazeera<\/i>\u00a0offices, with a GBU-31 bomb on Saturday. Israel has also used GBU-39 Small Diameter and Mark 84 bombs in its current onslaught. The GBU-31 and GBU-39 bombs are made by Boeing and the Mark 84 bombs are produced by General Dynamics. Both missiles are manufactured in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/muhammadshehad2\/status\/1394245475176493056<\/p>\n<p>Several posts on Twitter report F-15, F-16 and<a href=\"https:\/\/reseauinternational.net\/les-f-35-bombardent-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0F-35 fighter jets<\/a>\u00a0have also been hovering over Gaza. But these are not the only American corporations involved in the production of Israel\u2019s military aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/investigate.afsc.org\/company\/general-electric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Electric<\/a>\u00a0produces the engines for F-15 and F-16 jets.<a href=\"https:\/\/investigate.afsc.org\/company\/raytheon-technologies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Raytheon Technologies<\/a>\u00a0creates the missiles used to arm F-15 and F-35 planes. According to the American Friends Service Committee\u2019s Investigate Database,<a href=\"https:\/\/investigate.afsc.org\/company\/northrop-grumman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Northrop Grumman<\/a>\u00a0manufactures \u201capproximately 35% of the Lockheed Martin F-35 aircraft, including its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/investor.northropgrumman.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/northrop-grumman-delivers-center-fuselage-first-israeli-f-35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">center fuselage<\/a>, radar, avionics, electro-optics, navigation, communications and identification\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/northrop-grummans-f-35-supplier-in-israel-delivers-first-advanced-composite-component-from-foreign-military-sales-country-210807171.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subsystems<\/a>, and mission systems and mission-planning software.\u201d The arms manufacturer has also partnered with the Israeli military industry to build the LITENING targeting pod, a weapons laser navigation system used on F-16 warplanes.<\/p>\n<p>Military sales to Israel generate massive profits for these American corporations. Boeing secured a<a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/mideast\/RL33222.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0$2.4 billion sale<\/a>\u00a0to Israel from the U.S. State Department<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/cabinet-okays-massive-us-israel-aircraft-deal-658176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0last year<\/a>. In February, the aerospace behemoth scored a whopping<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2021\/02\/israeli-cabinet-oks-9b-us-arms-deal-boeing-kc-46as-top-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0$9 billion deal<\/a>\u00a0with Israel\u2019s Ministry of Defense. In the last decade, Raytheon\u2019s contracts to Israel have totaled more than $4 billion. Lockheed Martin\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ministers-sign-off-on-pricey-purchase-of-f-35s-refuelers-and-bombs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0most recent sale<\/a>\u00a0to Israel is estimated at more than $2 billion. In 2016, General Electric obtained part of a $300 million sale to Israel. Northrop Grumman is less transparent about its international sales. Out of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020-Annual-Report-Northrop-Grumman.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Northrop Grumman\u2019s reported $36.8 billion in sales in 2020<\/a>, 14 percent were international.<\/p>\n<p>These companies did not respond to requests for comment from\u00a0<i>MintPress News<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2>A coordinated military alliance between the U.S. and Israel<\/h2>\n<p>Despite calling for de-escalation, President Joe Biden\u2019s administration is going ahead with a $735 million weapons deal with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The major arms and aircraft manufacturers \u2014 Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon Technologies \u2014 are all expected to see their earnings<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/defense-stocks-in-focus-as-u.s.-sanctions-arms-sale-to-israel-2021-05-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0boom with the pending sale<\/a>. Boeing is the predicted primary beneficiary of the deal, given the sale is of its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/biden-administration-approved-735-million-arms-sale-israel-sources-2021-05-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Joint Direct Attack Munitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Israel receives $3.8 billion in foreign military assistance annually from the U.S., of which<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishcurrents.org\/a-guide-to-the-current-crisis-in-israel-palestine\/?mc_cid=3350a78058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Israel must spend 75%<\/a> on American-made weaponry under an agreement between the two governments. The recent $735 million sale came out of that yearly aid, according to Danaka Katovich, Middle East and Peace Collective coordinator at the women-led, anti-war organization CODEPINK.<\/p>\n<p>Katovich pointed out that these arms deals are not the only way the U.S. and Israel work together in a defense capacity: \u201cThe U.S. and Israel have had a strong military Alliance since the Nakba,\u201d Katovich said, referring to Israel\u2019s ethnic cleansing campaign of Palestine in 1947 and 1948 known as the Nakba, or \u201ccatastrophe\u201d in Arabic. \u201cIsrael and the U.S. do joint military exercises together, and the countries often work together to develop systems and weapons as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katovich also alluded to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/sep\/11\/nsa-americans-personal-data-israel-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0addressing how the U.S. National Security Agency provides Israel with unfiltered intelligence, including data of American citizens.<\/p>\n<h2>Biden facing growing Democratic opposition<\/h2>\n<p>Congressional pushback against the Biden administration\u2019s arms deal has been quick and sharp. Rep. Betty McCollum also condemned the arms sale. \u201cSelling American-made weapons to Israel while Members of Congress are asking for a ceasefire is completely tone deaf,\u201d the Minnesota Democrat told\u00a0<i>MintPress News<\/i>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Israel needs to end the bombing of Palestinian families in Gaza and the Biden administration must do more to bring a conclusion to this terrible crisis as swiftly as possible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McCollum is a prominent advocate for Palestinian rights in Congress. In April, she introduced a bill \u201c[ensuring] that United States taxpayer funds are not used by the Government of Israel to support\u201d military detention of Palestinian children and further annexation of Palestinian land. She said support is growing for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/2590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0H.R. 2590<\/a>\u00a0every day, emphasizing how four congressional politicians have signed on to the bill since May 12 \u2014 around when Israel began its bombing campaign against Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>As the Democratic Party appears to be shifting in its stance on Palestine-Israel, CODEPINK\u2019s Katovich confirmed change is coming, albeit slowly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With a lot of Democrats who have been in Congress for a long time, there hasn\u2019t been a lot of movement on their thoughts and actions on this issue. But I think there is some hope with the braver people in Congress like Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. So, we are moving in the right direction.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Countering AIPAC\u2019s relentless pressure<\/h2>\n<p>Amid growing calls from progressive politicians and activist groups in the U.S. to end Israel\u2019s bombardment of the Palestinian enclave, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobby group, is reviving pressure on the U.S. government to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/aipac-urges-congress-white-house-to-unequivocally-stand-by-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unequivocally stand<\/a>\u00a0with\u2026Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katovich said forces in the U.S.\u2019s pro-Israel lobby are tremendously influential in fostering the continued military alliance between the two governments, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Israel lobby says its main goal is to promote Israel\u2019s interests. And what is Israel\u2019s greatest interest rather than sustaining a military occupation over Palestinians? So, Israel needs U.S. backing to continue that occupation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For Katovich, understanding what our taxpayer dollars and financial investments contribute to can help dismantle the U.S.\u2019s imperialist endeavors:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s something we can have community control over in some ways, because a lot of our city, retirement, and public funds are invested in these companies and fund the greater war machine in the United States.
