The New York attorney general, meanwhile, has been asked to look at the company as \u201can imminent threat\u201d before it goes public on Wall Street.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The brothers live lavishly.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Joesley Batista, 48 \u2014 who, along\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-41255817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with his 47-year-old brother, Wesley, spent six months in jail<\/a>\u00a0in Brazil charged with insider trading \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/noticias.r7.com\/brasil\/fotos\/conheca-apartamento-luxuoso-de-joesley-batista-em-nova-york-19052017#!\/foto\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold a sprawling, 7,000-square-foot<\/a>\u00a0apartment in Midtown\u2019s Baccarat Hotel in 2018. After pressure from JBS in Brazil, the article was removed from the magazine\u2019s website, according to Brazilian press reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">After admitting to bribing nearly 2,000 elected officials in Brazil in order to secure government funding to fuel their company\u2019s US expansion a few years ago, Joesley and Wesley Batista were slapped with more than $3.2 billion in fines in 2017, the highest in the country\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Now JBS\u2019 parent company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/trump-usda-is-paying-millions-to-a-shady-brazilian-meatpacking-company-under-doj-sec-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J&amp;F Investimentos,<\/a>\u00a0is reportedly the subject of US Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission investigations for alleged bribery here. Last year, Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/10\/31\/tainted-beef-how-the-meat-you-buy-could-be-supporting-venezuelas-socialist-regime\/\">urged the federal government<\/a>\u00a0to investigate the beef conglomerate and its alleged dealings with the Venezuelan government after the company developed business ties with the administration of President Nicolas Maduro. The US has levied sanctions against the Venezuelan leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Last week, US legislators, including Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), renewed calls for the federal government to investigate alleged price-fixing by JBS and other big beef producers during the pandemic. A spokeswoman for JBS USA said \u201cwe have not been informed of any such request\u201d for an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The company \u201chas not been accused of any wrongdoing,\u201d said Nikki Richardson. \u201cJBS has fully cooperated with all the relevant authorities in the United States regarding events that took place in Brazil nearly three years ago. All investigations to date have focused on events in Brazil, and the company will continue to cooperate and respond to any subsequent inquiries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Last week, JBS, which sells beef and chicken under its Pilgrim\u2019s Pride and Swift labels, said it was closing a packing plant in Greeley, Colorado, where four workers died from the coronavirus, including longtime plant employee Saul Sanchez, 78. Sanchez, a father of six, had worked for more than 30 years at the plant.
