The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-science\/covid-health-ministry-finds-some-myocarditis-cases-linked-to-vaccines-669835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel included<\/a> public health experts specializing in epidemiology, members of the National Center for Disease Control and academics from the Tel Aviv University, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Haifa University.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3R3ZWV0X2VtYmVkX2NsaWNrYWJpbGl0eV8xMjEwMiI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJjb250cm9sIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1392095483854721024&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fchildrenshealthdefense.org%2Fdefender%2Fpfizer-vaccine-linked-heart-inflammation%2F&amp;sessionId=8a9d0eafbf8c5a857d94e1ab033b182a63166215&amp;siteScreenName=ChildrensHD&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=82e1070%3A1619632193066&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1392095483854721024\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/myocarditis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Myocarditis<\/a> is inflammation of the heart muscle that can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and death. <a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/rare-diseases\/myocarditis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to researchers<\/a> at the National Organization for Rare Disorders, myocarditis can result from infections, but \u201cmore commonly the myocarditis is a result of the body\u2019s immune reaction to the initial heart damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a study by Israeli health officials, there were 275 cases of myocarditis identified between December 2020 and May 2021, including 148 cases that occurred within a month after vaccination. Of those 148 cases, 27 occurred after the first dose and 121 after the second dose. About half of the cases involved people with previous medical conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-02\/israel-finds-probable-link-between-pfizer-shot-and-myocarditis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-science\/covid-health-ministry-finds-some-myocarditis-cases-linked-to-vaccines-669835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cases were reported<\/a> among men 16 to 30, and most often in 16- to 19-year-olds. Most of the patients were discharged from the hospital in less than four days, and 95% of the cases were considered mild.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a likelihood of a connection between receiving a second dose of vaccine and the onset of myocarditis in young men aged 16-30,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-science\/covid-health-ministry-finds-some-myocarditis-cases-linked-to-vaccines-669835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the group of experts concluded<\/a>. \u201cThe connection is stronger in young people aged 16-19 compared to other ages and it decreases as age increases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis \u201cis very suggestive of a causal nature\u201d between the vaccine and myocarditis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2021\/06\/israel-reports-link-between-rare-cases-heart-inflammation-and-covid-19-vaccination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Dror Mevorach<\/a>, head of internal medicine at the Hadassah University Medical Center who was tasked with leading the panel. \u201cI am convinced there is a relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does suggest that this is, at least statistically, a real phenomenon,\u201d said Peter Liu, a cardiologist and chief scientific officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.<\/p>\n<div class=\"covid-on-trial-banner\"><span class=\"cotb-container\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/commenton\/FDA-2021-P-0460-0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CHD Calls on FDA to Take COVID Vaccines Off the Market &#8211; <span class=\"neon-green\">Submit a Comment<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/div>\n<p>Douglas Diekema, a pediatrician and bioethicist at Seattle Children\u2019s Hospital, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2021\/06\/israel-reports-link-between-rare-cases-heart-inflammation-and-covid-19-vaccination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it\u2019s important to investigate<\/a> \u201ceven a hint of a signal.\u201d However he cautioned that \u201cwhile this report is suggestive \u2026 it requires validation in other populations by other investigators before we can be certain the link exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-02\/israel-finds-probable-link-between-pfizer-shot-and-myocarditis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, Pfizer said there is still no indication the cases are due to its vaccine. Myocarditis is often caused by viral infections, and <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\">COVID<\/a> infections have been reported to cause the condition, the drugmaker said.<\/p>\n<p>Pfizer\u2019s partner, BioNTech, said more than 300 million doses of the COVID vaccine have been administered globally and the \u201cbenefit-risk profile\u201d of the vaccine remains positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA careful assessment of the reports is ongoing and it has not been concluded,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-02\/israel-finds-probable-link-between-pfizer-shot-and-myocarditis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the company said<\/a>. \u201cAdverse events, including myocarditis and pericarditis, are being regularly and thoroughly reviewed by the companies as well as by regulatory authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli panel\u2019s findings come as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2021\/06\/israel-reports-link-between-rare-cases-heart-inflammation-and-covid-19-vaccination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel and many European countries<\/a> debate whether younger adolescents should be vaccinated against COVID. A decision to include the 12 to 15 age group in the country\u2019s vaccination program has not yet been made.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Health Ministry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-science\/covid-health-ministry-finds-some-myocarditis-cases-linked-to-vaccines-669835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recommendation<\/a> regarding the vaccination for children ages 12-15 will soon be formulated by the epidemiological team and will be communicated to the ministry\u2019s director general.<\/p>\n<p>Other countries, including the U.S. and Canada began vaccinating children 12 and older in May. As <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/doctors-tell-drug-regulators-vaccinating-kids-covid-irresponsible-unethical-unnecessary\/\">The Defender reported,<\/a> a group of more than 40 UK doctors last month in an open letter told Britain\u2019s drug regulation agency that vaccinating children for COVID is \u201cirresponsible, unethical and unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary findings of the Israeli panel studying a <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-vaccine-heart-inflammation-people-under-30-leaked-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possible link between the vaccine and myocarditis<\/a> were first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-science\/covid-health-ministry-finds-some-myocarditis-cases-linked-to-vaccines-669835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaked by Channel 12<\/a> at the end of April. Channel 12 mentioned two cases of people succumbing to the disease, but said there was no certainty as to the link between these cases and the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/vaccine-safety-review-eu-regulators-pfizer-moderna-astrazeneca-more-data\/\">The Defender reported<\/a> May 10, EU regulators called on <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/teen-hospitalized-brain-blood-clots-after-pfizer-vaccine\/\">Pfizer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-moderna-vaccines-blood-clots\/\">Moderna<\/a> to provide additional data related to the companies\u2019 COVID vaccines and a potential link to heart inflammation after the agency completed a safety review of all four <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\">COVID<\/a> vaccines authorized for emergency use in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/meeting-highlights-pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac-3-6-may-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> issued May 7, the European Medicines Agency\u2019s safety committee, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/committees\/pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PRAC<\/a>), disclosed its members were aware of cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-vaccine-heart-inflammation-people-under-30-leaked-study\/\">myocarditis<\/a> and pericarditis following Pfizer vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Regulators said they didn\u2019t see an indication the vaccine caused these cases. But as a prevention, PRAC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/meeting-highlights-pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac-3-6-may-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requested<\/a> Pfizer provide further data, including an analysis of events according to age and gender, in its next pandemic summary safety report before regulators could determine if any other regulatory action is needed.<\/p>\n<p>On May 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/cdc-investigating-reports-heart-problems-teens-adolescents-covid-vaccine\/\">announced<\/a> it was investigating reports that some teenagers and young adults vaccinated against COVID may have experienced heart problems.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC\u2019s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in a May 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/acip\/work-groups-vast\/technical-report-2021-05-17.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> said reports of myocarditis to date seemed to occur predominantly in adolescents and young adults, more often in males than females, more often following the second dose and typically within four days after vaccination. Most cases appeared to be \u201cmild\u201d and follow-up is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>On April 27, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/us-cdc-has-not-seen-link-between-heart-inflammation-covid-19-vaccines-2021-04-27\/#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Centers%20for%20Disease,Rochelle%20Walensky%20said%20on%20Tuesday.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the U.S. Department of Defense was investigating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/04\/26\/pentagon-tracking-14-cases-of-heart-inflammation-troops-after-covid-19-shots.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14 cases of heart inflammation<\/a> among people who were vaccinated through the military\u2019s health services.<\/p>\n<p>A search in the CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System<\/a> (VAERS) revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Myocarditis+%2810028606%29&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Pericarditis+%2810034484%29&amp;VAX=COVID19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">419 cases<\/a> of pericarditis and myocarditis reported between Dec. 14, 2020 and May 21, 2021 in the U.S following COVID vaccination.
