{"id":68006,"date":"2021-06-05T12:53:20","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T16:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=68006"},"modified":"2021-06-05T12:53:20","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T16:53:20","slug":"teens-developing-heart-inflammation-after-second-pfizer-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=68006","title":{"rendered":"Teens Developing Heart Inflammation After Second Pfizer Vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>7 U.S. Teens Developed Heart Inflammation After Second Pfizer Vaccine, New Study Shows<\/h1>\n<h3><em>A study published today in Pediatrics reported seven boys between the ages of 14 and 19 were hospitalized for heart inflammation and chest pain within four days of receiving the second dose of Pfizer\u2019s COVID vaccine.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><!--more-->By Megan Redshaw<br \/>\nThe Defender<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68007\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/heart-inflammation-teens-Pfizer-Covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/heart-inflammation-teens-Pfizer-Covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1.jpg 800w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/heart-inflammation-teens-Pfizer-Covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1-300x156.jpg 300w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/heart-inflammation-teens-Pfizer-Covid-vaccine-feature-800x417-1-768x400.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seven boys between the ages of 14 and 19 in the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roberthart\/2021\/06\/04\/heart-inflammation-reported-in-seven-us-teens-following-pfizer-covid-vaccine-study-shows\/?sh=43a9efa02424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly developed<\/a> chest pain and heart inflammation within four days of receiving a second dose of the Pfizer\/BioNTech COVID vaccine, according to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2021\/06\/02\/peds.2021-052478.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published today in Pediatrics.<\/p>\n<p>Heart imaging tests <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-vaccine-coronavirus-pandemic-health-0d56422a02293617feb211bb02587dcb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detected<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2021\/06\/02\/peds.2021-052478.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rare type<\/a> of heart muscle inflammation called myocarditis and pericarditis. None of the teens were critically ill but all were hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p>All were healthy enough to be sent home after two to six days in the hospital and are \u2018\u2019doing pretty well,\u2019\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roberthart\/2021\/06\/04\/heart-inflammation-reported-in-seven-us-teens-following-pfizer-covid-vaccine-study-shows\/?sh=43a9efa02424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Dr. Preeti Jaggi<\/a>, an Emory University infectious disease specialist who co-authored the report.<\/p>\n<p>Jaggi said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/heart-inflammation-covid-19-vaccine-teens-investigated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more follow-up is needed<\/a> to determine how the seven fare, but it\u2019s likely the heart changes were temporary.<\/p>\n<p>Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/heart-inflammation-covid-19-vaccine-teens-investigated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the seven boys<\/a> in the Pediatrics report displayed evidence of a possible previous <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\">COVID <\/a>infection, and doctors determined none of them had a rare inflammatory condition linked with COVID or pre-existing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re in the waiting period where we need to see whether this is cause-and-effect or not,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-vaccine-coronavirus-pandemic-health-0d56422a02293617feb211bb02587dcb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said John Grabenstein<\/a> of the Immunization Action Coalition, a former director of the U.S. Department of Defense\u2019s immunization program.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible myocarditis or pericarditis may be an additional rare adverse event related to systemic <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31583123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reactogenicity<\/a>, but currently no causal association has been established between this vaccine and myopericarditis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2021\/06\/02\/peds.2021-052478.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authors concluded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/myocarditis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Myocarditis<\/a> is inflammation of the heart muscle that can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and death. <a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.org\/rare-diseases\/myocarditis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to researchers<\/a> at the National Organization for Rare Disorders, myocarditis can result from infections, but \u201cmore commonly the myocarditis is a result of the body\u2019s immune reaction to the initial heart damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/pericarditis\/what-is-pericarditis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pericarditis<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2021\/06\/02\/peds.2021-052478.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">often used interchangeably<\/a> with myocarditis and refers to inflammation of the pericardium, the thin sac surrounding the heart.<\/p>\n<p>A search in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System<\/a> (VAERS) revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Myocarditis+%2810028606%29&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Pericarditis+%2810034484%29&amp;VAX=COVID19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">628 cases<\/a> of myocarditis and pericarditis, among all age groups reported in the U.S following COVID vaccination between Dec.14, 2020 and May 28, 2021. Of the 628 cases reported, <a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Myocarditis+%2810028606%29&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Pericarditis+%2810034484%29&amp;VAX=COVID19&amp;VAXMAN=PFIZER\/BIONTECH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">392 cases<\/a> were attributed to Pfizer, <a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Myocarditis+%2810028606%29&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Pericarditis+%2810034484%29&amp;VAX=COVID19&amp;VAXMAN=MODERNA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">206 cases<\/a> to Moderna and <a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Myocarditis+%2810028606%29&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Pericarditis+%2810034484%29&amp;VAX=COVID19&amp;VAXMAN=JANSSEN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27 cases<\/a> to J&amp;J\u2019s COVID vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 628 total cases of heart inflammation reported to VAERS, <a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Myocarditis+%2810028606%29&amp;SYMPTOMS[]=Pericarditis+%2810034484%29&amp;VAX=COVID19&amp;VAXMAN=PFIZER\/BIONTECH&amp;WhichAge=range&amp;LOWAGE=12&amp;HIGHAGE=17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40 cases<\/a> occurred in children ages 12 to 17, all were attributed to Pfizer\u2019s vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S., Europe and Israel have all announced they are investigating a possible link between heart inflammation and <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/covid-vaccine-spike-protein-travels-from-injection-site-organ-damage\/\">mRNA vaccines<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/teen-hospitalized-brain-blood-clots-after-pfizer-vaccine\/\">Pfizer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-moderna-vaccines-blood-clots\/\">Moderna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On June 2, Israeli health officials <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-vaccine-linked-heart-inflammation\/\">announced<\/a> they had found a \u201cprobable\u201d link between Pfizer\u2019s vaccine \u2014 which the country has relied on almost exclusively in its vaccination drive \u2014 and dozens of cases of heart inflammation in young men following the second dose.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-02\/israel-finds-probable-link-between-pfizer-shot-and-myocarditis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by Israeli health officials, there were 275 cases of myocarditis identified in Israel between December 2020 and May 2021, including 148 cases that occurred within a month after vaccination. Of those 148 cases, 27 occurred after the first dose and 121 after the second dose. About half of the cases involved people with previous medical conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-science\/covid-health-ministry-finds-some-myocarditis-cases-linked-to-vaccines-669835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cases were reported<\/a> among men 16 to 30, and most often in 16- to 19-year-olds. Most of the patients were discharged from the hospital in less than four days, and 95% of the cases were considered mild.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a likelihood of a connection between receiving a second dose of vaccine and the onset of myocarditis in young men aged 16-30,\u201d the group of experts concluded. \u201cThe connection is stronger in young people aged 16-19 compared to other ages and it decreases as age increases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/vaccine-safety-review-eu-regulators-pfizer-moderna-astrazeneca-more-data\/\">The Defender reported<\/a> May 10, EU regulators called on Pfizer and Moderna to provide additional data related to the companies\u2019 COVID vaccines and a potential link to heart inflammation after the agency completed a safety review of all four <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\">COVID<\/a> vaccines authorized for emergency use in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/meeting-highlights-pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac-3-6-may-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> issued May 7, the European Medicines Agency\u2019s safety committee, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/committees\/pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PRAC<\/a>), disclosed its members were aware of cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-vaccine-heart-inflammation-people-under-30-leaked-study\/\">myocarditis<\/a> and pericarditis following Pfizer vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>As a prevention, PRAC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/meeting-highlights-pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac-3-6-may-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requested<\/a> Pfizer provide further data, including an analysis of events according to age and gender, in its next pandemic summary safety report before regulators could determine if any other regulatory action is needed.<\/p>\n<p>On May 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/cdc-investigating-reports-heart-problems-teens-adolescents-covid-vaccine\/\">announced<\/a> it was investigating reports that some teenagers and young adults vaccinated against COVID may have experienced heart problems.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC\u2019s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in a May 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/acip\/work-groups-vast\/technical-report-2021-05-17.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> said reports of myocarditis to date seemed to occur predominantly in adolescents and young adults, more often in males than females, more often following the second dose and typically within four days after vaccination.
