On Sunday Israel’s parliament voted to approve the new coalition government under Naftali Bennet and\u00a0Yair Lapid, with\u00a0Bennet being sworn in as prime minister\u00a0<\/strong>following the narrow\u00a060-59 vote in Knesset.\u00a0Netanyahu’s 12-years in office comes to a close and he\u00a0now faces criminal charges<\/strong>\u00a0– no longer under the protection and legal immunity afforded by the PM’s office – over prior corruption cases.<\/p>\n But to nobody’s surprise, Bennett’s first words as newly sworn in unity leader signaled there will be little change in\u00a0Israeli foreign policy<\/a>:<\/p>\n Bennett\u2019s speech mostly dwelled on domestic issues, but he expressed opposition to U.S. efforts to revive Iran\u2019s nuclear deal with world powers.<\/em><\/p>\n “Israel will not allow Iran to arm itself with nuclear weapons,”\u00a0<\/strong>Bennett said, vowing to maintain Netanyahu\u2019s confrontational policy. \u201cIsrael will not be a party to the agreement and will continue to preserve full freedom of action.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Bennett nevertheless thanked President Joe Biden and the U.S. for its decades of support for Israel.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n And following this,\u00a0Netanyahu vowed his own return<\/strong>…<\/p>\n Netanyahu, speaking after him, vowed to return to power.
