Lowers counts of specific causes of death for more recent months should be considered a result of delayed coding, not a reduction in the counts of deaths themselves. COVID\u201319 death coding is expedited, and counts may be more complete in comparison to other causes of death.<\/h4>\n<h4>The underlying cause of death is the condition giving rise to the chain of events leading to death. Starting January 1, 1999, the underlying causes of death were classified in accordance with the Tenth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD\u201310), a coding structure developed by the World Health Organization.<\/h4>\n<h4>Cancer deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes C00\u2013C97.<br \/>\nChronic Lower Respiratory Diseases deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes J40\u2013J47.<br \/>\nHeart Disease deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes I00\u2013I09,I11,I13,I20\u2013I51.<br \/>\nBetween 1999\u20132008, influenza and pneumonia deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes J10\u2013J18. Starting in 2009, Pneumonia and Influenza deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes J09\u2013J18.<br \/>\nSepticemia deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes A40\u2013A41.9.<br \/>\nStroke deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 codes I60\u2013I69.<br \/>\nCOVID\u201319 deaths were classified using ICD\u201310 U07.1 as underlying cause of death.<\/h4>\n<p>___<br \/>\nSource: Michigan 2020\u201321 Death File, Extracted June 15, 2021 .
