However, little attention has been paid to an issue posed by an Associate Press reporter in a press conference following the meeting: \u201cU.S. intelligence has said that Russia tried to interfere in the last two presidential elections, and that Russia groups are behind hacks like SolarWinds and some of the ransomware attacks you just mentioned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/06\/16\/remarks-by-president-biden-in-press-conference-4\/\">answered<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Let\u2019s get this straight: How would it be if the United States were viewed by the rest of the world as interfering with the elections directly of other countries, and everybody knew it?\u00a0 What would it be like if we engaged in activities that he is engaged in?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He concluded,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cIt diminishes the standing of a country that is desperately trying to make sure it maintains its standing as a major world power.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Joe_Biden_and_Vladimir_Putin_in_Geneva_16_June_2021_05-680x420.jpg?itok=pywLfF1U\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Joe_Biden_and_Vladimir_Putin_in_Geneva_16_June_2021_05-680x420.jpg?itok=pywLfF1U\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/Joe_Biden_and_Vladimir_Putin_in_Geneva_16_June_2021_05-680x420.jpg?itok=pywLfF1U\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"309\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"ab811c09-7e83-4f0b-9c43-0641d419be0d\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sadly, Biden was lying, whether intentionally or out of false claim of ignorance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It appears that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/why-biden-s-american-election-meddling-comments-geneva-were-such-ncna1271316\">NBC News<\/a>\u00a0was the only mainstream media outlet that raised concern about Biden\u2019s assertion. It noted, \u201cthe United States\u00a0does\u00a0interfere in foreign elections. We\u2019ve done it for decades.\u201d It added, \u201cdenying this basic historical reality does us no favors with the rest of the world; indeed, it hampers our ability to continue to champion democracy and human rights.\u201d It follows outlining numerous incidents in which the U.S. intervened in the domestic electoral affairs of other countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A quick search for information about U.S. backing of coups and military interventions in foreign elections is revealing.\u00a0<\/strong>Wikipedia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change\">identifies<\/a>\u00a077 \u201cU.S. involvement[s] in regime change\u201d from the late-19th\u00a0century through the 2010s; William Blum\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/williamblum.org\/essays\/read\/overthrowing-other-peoples-governments-the-master-list\">identifies<\/a>\u00a057 \u201cinstances of the United States overthrowing, or attempting to overthrow, a foreign government since the Second World War.\u201d The political scientist Dov Levin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/isq\/article\/60\/2\/189\/1750842\">notes<\/a>, \u201cbetween 1946 and 2000, the United States and the USSR\/Russia intervened in this manner 117 times, or, put another way, in about\u00a0<em>one of every nine<\/em>\u00a0competitive national-level executive elections during this period.\u201d In a 2013 study,\u00a0<em>Foreign Policy<\/em>\u00a0magazine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2013\/08\/20\/mapped-the-7-governments-the-u-s-has-overthrown\/\">detailed<\/a>\u00a0seven CIA orchestrated coups in the post-WW-II era.<\/p>\n<p>The follow list details some of incidents when the U.S. \u2013 to use Biden\u2019s words \u2014 \u201cinterfering with the elections directly of other countries\u201d since World War II.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Syria, 1949<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4735438\/america-syria-war-coup-history\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u00a0magazine, it is \u201c\u2019one of the first covert actions that the CIA pulled off,\u2019 since it had been created\u00a0in 1947, according to Douglas Little, professor of history at Clark University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran, 1953<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 CIA orchestrated a coup against Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nsarchive.gwu.edu\/briefing-book\/iran\/2017-06-15\/iran-1953-state-department-finally-releases-updated-official-history\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the CIA: \u201cIt was the potential \u2026 to leave Iran open to Soviet aggression \u2014 at a time when the Cold War was at its height and when the United Sates was involved in an undeclared war in Korea against forces supported by the U.S.S.R. and China \u2014 that compelled the United States [REDACTED] in planning and executing TPAJAX [the code name of the coup operation].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guatemala, 1954<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the U.S. State Department\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/narratively.com\/the-literally-unbelievable-story-of-the-original-fake-news-network-full\/\">moved<\/a>\u00a0against Guatemalan Pres. Jacobo \u00c1rbenz after he introduced land reforms that threatened the holdings of the U.S.-owned United Fruit Company; the coup forced \u00c1rbenz from power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cuba, 1959-present<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the U.S. government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/timeline\/us-cuba-relations\">supported<\/a>\u00a0Fulgencio Batista, a former soldier and Cuban dictator from 1933 to 1944, who seized power for a second time in a 1952 coup.\u00a0On January 1, 1959, the 26th\u00a0of July Movement, led by Fidel Castro, forced Batista to flee the island. In April 1961, the U.S. launched the Bay of Pigs invasion, an unsuccessful attempt to remove Castro from power.\u00a0The U.S. followed with an embargo of the island that lasted 60 years. In 1983, Pres. Ronald Reagan labeled Cuba a \u201cterrorist state\u201d and, in 1996, the Helms-Burton Act was adopted, further tightening the embargo. In 2009, Pres. Barack Obama eased some of the restrictions but, in 2017, Pres. Donald Trump reinstated the embargo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Congo, 1960<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the U.S. Senate\u2019s 1972 Church Committee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarclibrary.org\/publib\/church\/reports\/ir\/pdf\/ChurchIR_3A_Congo.pdf\">found\u00a0<\/a>that the CIA \u201ccontinued to maintain close contact with Congolese who expressed a desire to assassinate [Patrice] Lumumba,\u201d and that \u201cCIA officers encouraged and offered to aid these Congolese in their efforts against Lumumba.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dominican Republic, 1961<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the Church Committee\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarclibrary.org\/publib\/church\/reports\/ir\/pdf\/ChurchIR_3D_Trujillo.pdf\">found<\/a>\u00a0that the CIA backed the assassination of the dictator, Rafael Trujillo, through the provision of \u201c[m]aterial support, consisting of three pistols and three carbines, was supplied to various dissidents\u2026. United States\u2019 officials knew that the dissidents intended to overthrow Trujillo, probably by assassination\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>South Vietnam, 1963\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 following the defeat of French forces in Dien Bien Phu\u00a0in 1954 to Vietnamese nationalist forces led by Ho Chi Minh, the U.S. military sought to contain communist from the North; as detailed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtholyoke.edu\/acad\/intrel\/pentagon2\/pent6.htm\"><em>Pentagon Papers<\/em><\/a>, in 1963, South Vietnamese generals \u2014 with CIA support \u2014 seized and assassinated country\u2019s leader, Ngo Dinh Diem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brazil, 1964<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 U.S. Ambassador Lincoln Gordon feared that Brazilian Pres. Joao Goulart would \u201cmake Brazil the China of the 1960s\u201d and Pres. Lyndon Johnson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtholyoke.edu\/acad\/intrel\/pentagon2\/pent6.htm\">told CIA<\/a>\u00a0officials planning the coup, \u201cI think we ought to take every step that we can, be prepared to do everything that we need to do.\u201d President Lyndon Johnson told his advisors planning the coup,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chile, 1973<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the CIA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nsarchive.gwu.edu\/briefing-book\/chile\/2016-09-09\/cia-cover-chile\">backed<\/a>\u00a0the Chilian military\u2019s violent overthrowing of the democratically elected leader, Salvador Allende, paving the way for the brutal \u2014 and U.S.-friendly \u2014 Augusto Pinochet<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afghanistan, 1979-present\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 during the 1980s, the CIA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nsarchive2.gwu.edu\/NSAEBB\/NSAEBB57\/us.html\">funded<\/a>\u00a0military operations to frustrate the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.\u00a0Fighting between CIA-funded Afghans and the Russians continued through 1988 when the Russians decided to withdraw, and the CIA ended its aid in 1992. However, the attacks of September 11, 2001, led the Bush administration to conduct operations against terrorists throughout the world.\u00a0 Osama bin Laden, the apparent mastermind behind the September 11th\u00a0attacks, was based in Afghanistan where a U.S. military occupation will last until September 11, 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicaragua, 1981-1990<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 in November 1981, Pres. Reagan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oig.justice.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/archive\/special\/9712\/appa.htm\">signed<\/a>\u00a0National Security Directive 17, authorizing the CIA to back \u201cdemocratic\u201d leaders and take actions against the Sandinistas to stop the spread of \u201ccommunism\u201d in Nicaragua; in October 1986, Congress approved $100 million in funds for the Contras; the following year, after the discovery of private resupply efforts orchestrated by the National Security Council and Oliver North, Congress ceased all but \u201cnon-lethal\u201d aid in 1987. The war between the Sandinistas and the Contras ended with a cease-fire in 1990.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia, 1996<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 as originally\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1996-07-09\/news\/mn-22423_1_boris-yeltsin\">reported<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, \u201ca team of American political strategists who helped Gov. Pete Wilson with his abortive presidential bid earlier this year said this week that they served as Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin\u2019s secret campaign weapon in his comeback win over a Communist challenger.\u201d Following the recent Biden-Putin summit,\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/jan\/05\/americans-spot-election-meddling-doing-years-vladimir-putin-donald-trump\">notes<\/a>,\u201d without the chaos and deprivation of the US-backed Yeltsin era, Putinism would surely not have established itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Venezuela, 1998-present<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 since Hugo Chavez was elected president in 1998, the bipartisan Washington establishment has been out to put an end to what has been dubbed Latin America\u2019s \u201cpink tide\u201d of socialism.
