The scale of the locust outbreak, which now affects seven East African countries, is like nothing in recent memory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of the largest swarms are actually bigger than any city on the entire planet, and when they arrive in an area they start going to work immediately.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it is being reported that some farms in Kenya\u00a0<a title=\"\u201care being devoured in as little as 30 seconds\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5462496\/kenyan-farmers-traumatized-as-swarms-of-locusts-devour-crops-in-seconds-1.5462979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201care being devoured in as little as 30 seconds\u201d<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The locusts are so bad in some parts of Kenya that entire fields of crops are being devoured in as little as 30 seconds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moses Omondi, a program officer at Farm Radio, a charity that works with to bring information and news to farmers, says that in Kitui County, in eastern Kenya, there were no locusts this time last week. Now, entire farms have been destroyed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Could you imagine working extremely hard on a farm all year long and then seeing it completely consumed by locusts in less than a minute?<\/p>\n<p>One Kenyan farmer that had his farm destroyed by the locusts openly admitted\u00a0<a title=\"that he is considering committing suicide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5462496\/kenyan-farmers-traumatized-as-swarms-of-locusts-devour-crops-in-seconds-1.5462979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that he is considering committing suicide<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He is affected psychologically to the extent of telling me that, \u2018If worst comes to worst, I can even commit suicide.\u2019 The reason being, this is the source of his income. He\u2019s been taking his kid to school using farm produce. He\u2019s been paying bills using farm produce. So according to him, he [says], \u2018Moses, if this continues \u2014 if the government is not coming to act \u2014 then I\u2019m thinking of committing suicide.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course suicide is never the solution to anything.\u00a0 But it is easy to understand the utter despair that these farmers are feeling now that everything that they have worked for has been completely wiped out.<\/p>\n<p>If you held a single desert locust in your hand you might think that it is cute.\u00a0 But the truth is that these are extremely voracious little creatures, and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s Keith Cressman says that even a \u201cmedium-size swarm\u201d can eat\u00a0<a title=\"an astounding amount of food\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/locust-swarms-could-rob-millions-in-already-vulnerable-east-african-nations-of-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an astounding amount of food<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A medium-size swarm of locusts can eat the same amount of food as the entire population of Kenya, Cressman said, and \u201cthat swarm in one day can eat the same amount of food as everybody here in the tri-state area, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. So not taking action in time \u2013 you can see the consequences.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ultimately what all of this means is that we are going to see famine.<\/p>\n<p>And I am not just talking about the sort of famine where a few thousand people starve.\u00a0 Right now, these locusts are affecting countries\u00a0<a title=\"\u201cwith a combined population of nearly 2 billion\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.ae\/opinion\/editorial\/in-the-eye-of-the-swarm-the-growing-threat-of-the-desert-locust-1.975860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cwith a combined population of nearly 2 billion\u201d<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The numbers involved, the UN has warned, are \u201cunprecedented\u201d. If they are not contained, their appetites will trigger famine, destroy livelihoods for local farmers and undermine the food security of a group of countries with a combined population of nearly 2 billion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I keep writing about\u00a0<a title=\"\u201cthe perfect storm\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/archives\/even-the-mainstream-media-is-now-admitting-that-humanity-is-facing-a-perfect-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cthe perfect storm\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that humanity is facing, but because most people in the western world are still living very cushy lifestyles I think that a lot of them don\u2019t really grasp when I am trying to tell them.\u00a0 Sadly, the truth is that we have entered a time when one major crisis after another is erupting, and\u00a0<a title=\"things are only going to get worse as time rolls along\" href=\"http:\/\/themostimportantnews.com\/archives\/michael-snyders-warning-to-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">things are only going to get worse as time rolls along<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to unusually wet weather and a couple of giant cyclones, conditions have been perfect for desert locusts to breed.\u00a0 According to\u00a0<a title=\"National Geographic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/2020\/02\/locust-plague-climate-science-east-africa\/#close\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Geographic<\/a>, this is what has caused these colossal swarms of locusts\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Desert locusts live for about three months. After a generation matures, the adults lay their eggs which, under the right conditions, can hatch to form a new generation up to 20 times larger than the previous one. In this way, desert locusts can increase their population size exponentially over successive generations, Cressman says.
