Wilbur Ross: Coronavirus will “help” bring jobs back to the U.S. from China<\/h1>\n

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Thursday on Fox Business’ “Mornings with Maria” that the spread of coronavirus in China will “help to accelerate the return of jobs to North America.”<\/p>\n

Why it matters:<\/strong>\u00a0The virus has killed 170 people in China and infected more than 7,700 people. Worries about the virus rattled\u00a0U.S. markets this week<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0the Federal Reserve and other financial entities<\/a>\u00a0debated if they should weigh in on its potential impact.<\/p>\n

The exchange:<\/strong><\/p>\n

WILBUR ROSS: “Well, first of all, every\u00a0American’s heart has to go out\u00a0to the victims of the\u00a0coronavirus.\u00a0So I don’t want to talk about a\u00a0victory lap over a very\u00a0unfortunate, very malignant\u00a0disease.\u00a0But the fact is, it does give\u00a0businesses yet another thing to\u00a0consider when they go through\u00a0their review of their supply\u00a0chain.\u00a0And top of all the other things,\u00a0because you had SARS, you have\u00a0the African swine virus there,\u00a0now you have this.\u00a0It’s another risk factor that\u00a0people need to take into\u00a0account.\u00a0So I think it will help to\u00a0accelerate the return of jobs to\u00a0North America, some to U.S.,\u00a0probably some to Mexico as well.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

MARIA BARTIROMO: “Oh, that’s a good point,\u00a0actually.\u00a0Yeah, because these companies\u00a0have to do something.\u00a0They’re going to have to have an\u00a0alternative once they shut down\u00a0things in China is what you’re\u00a0saying.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

ROSS: “Absolutely.\u00a0And you’ve already heard Apple\u00a0talking about figuring out how\u00a0to replace some of the Chinese\u00a0production.\u00a0You had others also doing the\u00a0same thing.\u00a0And so I think there’s a\u00a0confluence of factors that will\u00a0make it very, very likely more\u00a0re-shoring to the U.S., and some\u00a0re-shoring to Mexico.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
