A federal judge similarly blasted as \u201cincomprehensible\u201d a federal lawsuit Renz filed alleging \u201ctyranny\u201d from Ohio\u2019s government regarding the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Lipps said Gross and Stephanie Stock, president of anti-vaccination advocacy group Ohio Advocates for Medical Freedom, were adamant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe did not include Tom Renz or Sherri Tenpenny on our agenda,\u201d he said. \u201cThey protested, called me personally, and said they wanted Renz and Tenpenny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Renz and Tenpenny both testified in support of Gross\u2019 House Bill 248, which would prohibit colleges, insurers, hospitals, nursing homes, employers and others from requiring, incentivizing or asking about vaccination \u2014 all vaccines, not just for COVID-19. Public health experts have said in previous interviews the legislation would suppress Ohio\u2019s vaccination rates against a number of diseases and increase the likelihood of outbreaks of infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The bill drew huge public interest, prompting the committee to allow only certain, invited witnesses to testify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Tenpenny, one of the few invited witnesses,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/2021\/06\/09\/doctor-sherri-tenpenny-testimony-ohio-lawmakers-vaccines-magnetized-5-g\/7616027002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">unleashed a\u00a0torrent of inaccurate and bizarre claims about purported dangers of the vaccine<\/a>. She alleged that vaccinated people become \u201cmagnetized,\u201d as evidenced by pictures on the internet of them with forks and spoons sticking to their persons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThere has been people who have long suspected there was some sort of an interface, yet to be defined, an interface between what\u2019s being injected in these shots, and all of the 5G towers,\u201d Tenpenny said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The comments, which\u00a0are not accurate, would soon\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/2021\/06\/11\/fact-checkers-comics-swarm-ohio-doctors-magnetic-vaccine-testimony-house-health-covid-false\/7594059002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">drag the Ohio House through lampooning\u00a0national\u00a0media\u00a0coverage<\/a>\u00a0and ridicule from late night comics like\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/john-oliver-debunks-wacky-covid-vaccine-magnet-myth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">John Oliver<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QNjFijx9tlE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">Stephen Colbert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>&#8216;Everyday citizens were shocked&#8217;<\/strong>:\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/2021\/06\/15\/ohio-house-bill-248-immunization-laws\/7698890002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">Controversial testimony &#8216;wounded&#8217; Ohio anti-vaccination bill<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At 1:47 a.m. the day after Tenpenny\u2019s comments, the doctor emailed Gross to thank the lawmaker for being \u201cstrong and brave\u201d and allowing her to testify, according to an email obtained in a public records request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In the email, Tenpenny sent a largely\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780128198704000098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">unrelated article from the Journal of Nanobiotechnology\u00a0examining the biochemical functionality of magnetic particles as nanosensors<\/a>, which are used in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Tenpenny seemed to claim it as proof of her comments regarding COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cDon\u2019t let them bully you or disparage me,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWe\u2019re on to something here\u2026 and the LOUDER they scream, the more they are trying to hide. I stand by everything I said today. I put out FACTS and HYPOTHESIS (points to ponder).<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">God Wins,<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Dr. Sherri Tenpenny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The day after the testimony, with the comments going viral online, Gross came to Lipps\u2019 office and said she needed help with \u201cdamage control,\u201d according to Lipps\u2019 remarks in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Gross declined to confirm or deny Lipps\u2019 account or answer emailed questions. She said she\u2019s busy and considers the questions \u201cold news.\u201d However, she claimed Lipps praised Renz\u2019s testimony and alleged he thought Tenpenny \u201csounds great.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2021\/07\/14\/PCIN\/61668edb-b0c5-4dad-a698-0112f21ab417-rep-lipps.jpg?width=300&amp;height=300&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2021\/07\/14\/PCIN\/61668edb-b0c5-4dad-a698-0112f21ab417-rep-lipps.jpg?width=600&amp;height=600&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" alt=\"State Rep. Gross,\u201d he said in a text message to the Capital Journal. \u201cI have quickly learned she [accepts] no responsibility for her actions or decisions and is quick to blame anyone and everyone. Also, the first agenda we [put] out for proponent testimony had NO Renz and NO Tenpenny. Rep. Gross vehemently objected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When the\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/ohiochannel.org\/video\/ohio-house-health-committee-6-15-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">House Health Committee met\u00a0a week after the comments went viral<\/a>,\u00a0Lipps defended the practice of bringing in witnesses like Tenpenny, even if doing so made people \u201cuncomfortable.\u201d He emphasized the importance of hearing from those one disagrees with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cPlease step outside your own little world and understand that people are not all the same, and they don\u2019t all believe the same,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are not always right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Ohio Advocates for Medical Freedom helped draft Gross\u2019 HB 248 legislation and has paid for a spread of radio ads to gin up support for the bill,\u00a0according to\u00a0disclosures with the Federal Communications Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Stock \u2014 president of the group, which researchers found to be the\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6954281\/pdf\/nihms-1542845.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">fourth-largest purchaser nationwide of anti-vaccination ads on Facebook<\/a> \u2014 declined to answer questions for this report.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">So who is Sherri Tenpenny?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Most Ohioans had probably never heard of Tenpenny before video of her June 8 testimony went viral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In anti-vaccination corners of the internet, however, she\u2019s something of a celebrity doctor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">She is close with Alex Jones,\u00a0a conspiracy theorist and media figure who is\u00a0facing libel lawsuits after claiming the Sandy Hook school shooting that left 20 young children and six adults dead at a Connecticut school was a \u201cgiant hoax.\u201d\u00a0The two have been friends for 20 years, they both said in a\u00a0recent interview on Jones\u2019 show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">On a recent episode of her podcast, Tenpenny interviewed pillow magnate Mike Lindell, who is among the loudest backers of former President Donald Trump\u2019s lie that the 2020 election was rigged. Lindell and his company are also facing libel suits related to these claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While Tenpenny has repeated\u00a0similar claims\u00a0of election fraud, her primary focus is vaccines and wrongfully depicting them as dangerous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cVaccines are now, and people, listen to this closely, always have been a method of mass destruction, a method of depopulation,\u201d she claimed\u00a0earlier in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Tenpenny\u2019s anti-vaccine activism has generated multiple related revenue streams for her. She hosted a \u201cboot camp\u201d this year for $623, training people to convince others to refrain from vaccination. In May, she\u00a0hosted a live streaming training event\u00a0to explain the \u201c20 mechanisms of injury from the shots\u201d \u2014 platinum package tickets went for $199. Her 2008 book, \u201cSaying No to Vaccines: A Resource Guide for all Ages,\u201d is\u00a0available on Amazon for\u00a0$877.95, one of several similar titles she has authored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Despite this work, Tenpenny does not follow acceptable scientific methodology, her testimony is \u201cunreliable\u201d and she is \u201cunqualified\u201d to address vaccine injury, according to Special Master Richard Abell, appointed by the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Abell made these remarks in a 2010\u00a0ruling that blocked Tenpenny\u2019s testimony\u00a0on behalf of a man who alleged a hepatitis B vaccination gave him Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare side effect of vaccination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The legal standard, he wrote, calls on judges to presume admissibility of testimony of an expert witness. However, he found her methodology \u201cso divergent from the scientific method as to be nonsensical and confusing,\u201d prompting his ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cHer ideas on vaccine injury have not been exposed to any critical analysis of those in the relevant field, let alone peer-reviewed medical journals,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is no way to ascertain whether Dr. Tenpenny\u2019s opinion is credibly accepted by those who would know; there are only the patent defects in her report that militate for the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Tenpenny did not respond to repeated phone calls.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Who is Tom Renz?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">After Tenpenny wrapped up her testimony on June 8, Fremont attorney Tom Renz addressed the committee.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2021\/07\/14\/PCIN\/572bc514-85f9-4a49-b460-50632d32a6a5-Tom-Renz.jpg?width=300&amp;height=169&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2021\/07\/14\/PCIN\/572bc514-85f9-4a49-b460-50632d32a6a5-Tom-Renz.jpg?width=600&amp;height=338&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" alt=\"Tom Renz speaks to the House State and Local government Committee Feb. 17.\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Tom Renz speaks to the House State and Local government Committee Feb. 17.\" data-c-credit=\"Ohio Channel\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Renz obtained his law license shortly before the pandemic began and his legal career has since wrapped around it. (He says he previously\u00a0clerked for an Indiana Supreme Court justice but doesn\u2019t remember when.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He is currently representing clients in COVID-19 related lawsuits against:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul\">\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Maine Gov. Janet Mills\u00a0and related health officials<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear\u00a0and related health officials<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham\u00a0and related health officials<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">The\u00a0U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_ar_b_ul_li\">Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine\u00a0and related health officials (for the second time).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The lawsuits are sprawling, some stretching over 100 pages, and are rife with claims that the COVID-19 death count is \u201cinflated,\u201d that asymptomatic spread of disease is a \u201cfallacy,\u201d that masks don\u2019t work and a deluge of other inaccurate and often debunked claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">No cases have yet received any significant rulings. U.S. District Judge James Carr\u00a0described the first lawsuit against DeWine\u00a0as\u00a0\u201ca jumble of alleged facts, conclusory and speculative assertions, personal and third-party allegations, opinions, and articles of dubious provenance and admissibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Renz\u00a0withdrew the lawsuit\u00a0and has since filed a similar case that awaits a ruling. Ohio Stands Up, a citizens group that acts as plaintiffs in the cases, created a crowdsourced legal fund to pay Renz and his partner, Robert Gargasz.
