{"id":7464,"date":"2020-02-19T08:58:21","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T12:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=7464"},"modified":"2020-02-19T08:58:21","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T12:58:21","slug":"deep-state-throws-it-weight-around-at-the-department-of-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=7464","title":{"rendered":"<i>DEEP STATE<\/i> THROWS IT WEIGHT AROUND AT THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>2,000 ex-Justice Department employees call on Barr to resign over Roger Stone case<\/h1>\n<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/0217-en-dojbrief-jiang-2029074-640x360-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7465\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/0217-en-dojbrief-jiang-2029074-640x360-1.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/0217-en-dojbrief-jiang-2029074-640x360-1-300x158.jpg 300w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/0217-en-dojbrief-jiang-2029074-640x360-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/0217-en-dojbrief-jiang-2029074-640x360-1-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>BY MELISSA QUINN<br \/>\nCBS<\/p>\n<p><em>Washington \u2014<\/em>\u00a0Some 2,000 former Justice Department officials who served in Republican and Democratic administrations are urging Attorney General William Barr to resign after the department intervened in the\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/roger-stone-trump-barr-praise-prosecutors-quit\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">case of Roger Stone<\/a><\/span>, a longtime ally of President Trump&#8217;s, triggering claims of political interference.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department alumni made their request to Barr in an open\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@dojalumni\/doj-alumni-statement-on-the-events-surrounding-the-sentencing-of-roger-stone-c2cb75ae4937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a>\u00a0published Sunday and said the move by top officials at the department to overrule federal prosecutors in Stone&#8217;s case was &#8220;unheard of.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Initially, some 1,100 signed on but that number almost doubled, hitting 2,003 during the day Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such behavior is a grave threat to the fair administration of justice,&#8221; the former officials wrote. &#8220;In this nation, we are all equal before the law. A person should not be given special treatment in a criminal prosecution because they are a close political ally of the president. Governments that use the enormous power of law enforcement to punish their enemies and reward their allies are not constitutional republics; they are autocracies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department declined to comment on the letter on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis of confidence that has ensnared the Justice Department reached a fever pitch last week after Barr overruled federal prosecutors who\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/roger-stone-sentence-federal-prosecutors-ask-for-7-9-year-sentence-for-trump-confidante-2020-02-10\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">recommended Stone<\/a><\/span>\u00a0receive seven to nine years in prison for his\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/roger-stone-verdict-guilty-on-all-7-counts-jury-finds-in-trial-of-longtime-trump-associate-today-2019-11-15\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">November conviction<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on seven charges. The intervention led four prosecutors to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/roger-stone-sentencing-department-of-justice-moves-lower-recommendation\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">abruptly withdraw<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from the case, and one resigned from the department altogether.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department&#8217;s move in Stone&#8217;s case raised questions of whether the department was responding to political pressure from the White House, given that President Trump tweeted his displeasure with the initial recommended sentence and has repeatedly said Stone was unfairly prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>But in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/barr-blasts-trumps-tweets-stone-case-impossible-job\/story?id=68963276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">interview with ABC News<\/a>, Barr said Mr. Trump has never asked him &#8220;to do anything in a criminal case.&#8221; He also\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/william-barr-president-trump-tweets-department-of-justice-impossible-to-do-my-job\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">denounced<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the president&#8217;s tweets on pending Justice Department cases in a rare rebuke of Mr. Trump&#8217;s actions, saying they &#8220;make it impossible for me to do my job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still, scrutiny over Barr heightened further Friday after the revelation that he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bill-barr-calls-for-outside-prosecutor-to-review-the-michael-flynn-case-2020-02-14\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">assigned an outside prosecutor<\/a>\u00a0to review the work of prosecutors in the case of Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump&#8217;s former national security adviser.
