Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that the \u201cvoluntary phase is over\u201d for COVID-19 vaccinations, the New York City Democrat told MSNBC Tuesday.<\/p>\n

De Blasio was asked if the city will require all city workers to be vaccinated. \u201cYes, we are climbing a ladder. I\u2019m not answering yes to your question yet,\u201d he told MSNBC.<\/p>\n

De Blasio announced Monday that all city employees would need to submit weekly testing if they aren\u2019t vaccinated against the coronavirus. In addition, unvaccinated city workers are required to wear a mask at their workplaces or they will be removed and suspended without pay.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Sept. 13 the entire city workforce will be mandated under the COVID safety mandate to either get vaccinated, which is far preferable, or get tested once a week,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cThis is about our recovery\u2026 this is about keeping people safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nOnly 43% of the New York City Police Department\u2019s active workforce are vaccinated. Over 23,000 of the police department\u2019s 54,000 employees are fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to shake people at this point and say, \u2018Come on now.\u2019 We tried voluntary. We could not have been more kind and compassionate,\u201d de Blasio said on MSNBC. \u201cFree testing, everywhere you turn, incentives, friendly, warm embrace. The voluntary phase is over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can keep doing those things. I\u2019m not saying shut it down. I\u2019m saying voluntary alone doesn\u2019t work,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s time for mandates, because it\u2019s the only way to protect our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio also said in early July that masks would be required in New York City grade schools this fall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m absolutely confident based on this guidance and everything else we\u2019ve seen that we\u2019ll be able to get all our kids back into school in September, but for now sticking with the idea that \u2026 wearing the masks is a smart thing to do in schools,\u201d de Blasio said during the press conference. \u201cWe\u2019ll keep assessing as we go along.\u201d<\/p>\n
