As they now need to enforce mask mandates on top of regular safety procedures onboard, they\u2019re also feeling less safe doing their jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>By the numbers:\u00a0<\/strong><a class=\"gtm-content-click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afacwa.org\/unruly_passengers_survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-link-text=\"More than 85%\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.afacwa.org\/unruly_passengers_survey\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\">More than 85%<\/a>\u00a0of 5,000 flight attendants surveyed between June 25 and July 14 said that they\u2019ve had to deal with unruly passengers this year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Close to 60% said they\u2019ve had to deal with at least five incidents, while 17% said they experienced a physical incident.<\/li>\n<li>Of the total surveyed, 84% said they experienced unruly behavior during flight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What they\u2019re saying:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIncidents of unruly passengers on aircraft are up so high that if they continue at this rate, we may see more incidents in this one year alone than we&#8217;ve seen in the entire history of aviation,\u201d Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, told reporters on a call Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enforcing mask mandates\u00a0<\/strong>and dealing with drunk passengers ranked among the top causes for escalated interactions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Urination, throwing trash, punching back of seats, name-calling, and following staff off planes were cited as types of passenger abuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And while the number<\/strong>\u00a0of unruly passengers may be relatively small, Nelson added that the \u201cevents on board are exponentially more than they typically are and the atmosphere they\u2019re creating is increasingly hostile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big picture:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve been led to believe that we\u2019re in conflict with each other in this country,\u201d said Nelson.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cFlight attendants have been called\u00a0<a class=\"gtm-content-click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/07\/09\/tomi-lahren-nazis-of-the-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-link-text=\"Nazis\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/07\/09\/tomi-lahren-nazis-of-the-air\/\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\">Nazis<\/a>\u00a0by cable news personalities \u2026 [A]ll of that rhetoric is adding to the conflict and attempting to define flight attendants as being difficult when really they\u2019re just doing their jobs.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>___<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/flight-attendant-harassment-bc32953f-79f0-4103-aea7-1a94e2524521.html\">https:\/\/www.axios.com\/flight-attendant-harassment-bc32953f-79f0-4103-aea7-1a94e2524521.html<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In-flight tensions at historic high<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-76746","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76746","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=76746"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76746\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=76746"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=76746"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=76746"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
