In COVID feud, DeSantis takes shot at Biden: \u2018I don\u2019t want to hear a blip … from you\u2019<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Gov. Ron DeSantis lashed out at President Joe Biden a day after Biden told the Republican governor\u00a0to \u201cget out of the way\u201d\u00a0<\/a>of mask mandates.<\/p>\n

During a stop in Panama City on Wednesday, DeSantis accused Biden of \u201chelping facilitate\u201d COVID-19 by not securing the border with Mexico. He said immigrants crossing the border are spreading variants of the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have hundreds of thousands of people pouring across every month,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cNot only are they letting them through, they\u2019re farming them out all across the country, putting them on planes, putting them on buses. Do you think they\u2019re worrying about COVID for that? Of course not.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the immigrants are crossing the border from all over the world, and \u201cwhatever variants there are around the world, they\u2019re coming across that southern border.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not shutting down the virus. He\u2019s helping facilitate it,\u201d DeSantis said of Biden.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you get this border secure?\u201d DeSantis added. \u201cUntil you do that, I don\u2019t want to hear a blip about COVID from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis\u2019 comments came after Biden on Tuesday criticized the governor\u2019s opposition to mask mandates.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, we need leadership from everyone. If some governors aren\u2019t willing to do the right thing to beat this pandemic, then they should allow businesses and universities who want to do the right thing to be able to do it,\u201d Biden said in remarks about the pandemic. \u201cI say to these governors, please help. But if you are not going to help, at least get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Herald\/Times asked the DeSantis administration for COVID-19 data on immigrants crossing the border but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n

Amid a rising number of border crossings this year, the Biden administration announced this week it would leave in place\u00a0a public health rule<\/a>\u00a0that has allowed it to turn away hundreds of thousands of migrants.<\/p>\n

The administration was planning on lifting the rule, adopted by former President Donald Trump last year,\u00a0according to The New York Times<\/a>. But on Monday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0that noncitizens migrating to the U.S. from Mexico or Canada create \u201ca serious danger of the introduction of COVID-19 into the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday,\u00a0The Washington Post reported<\/a>\u00a0that the Biden administration was planning on offering coronavirus vaccines to migrants in custody at the Mexico border, where health officials are struggling with soaring numbers of infections.<\/p>\n

In Florida, which leads the nation in infections and hospitalizations fueled by the delta variant, DeSantis has attributed the state\u2019s uptick in cases to seasonal factors and rejected calls to impose a mask mandate. He last week\u00a0signed an executive order<\/a>\u00a0threatening to withhold state funds from school districts that put mask mandates in place to follow federal health guidance for areas experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, DeSantis doubled down on his opposition to such mandates, saying that \u201cwe can either have a free society or we can have a biomedical security state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell you, Florida, we\u2019re a free state,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you\u2019re coming after the rights of parents in Florida, I\u2019m standing in your way.\u201d<\/p>\n
