{"id":83823,"date":"2021-09-10T11:10:20","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T15:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=83823"},"modified":"2021-09-10T11:10:20","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T15:10:20","slug":"terrible-stain-on-america-us-airstrikes-have-killed-up-to-48000-civilians-since-9-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=83823","title":{"rendered":"TERRIBLE STAIN ON AMERICA: US Airstrikes Have Killed Up To 48,000 Civilians Since 9\/11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>US Airstrikes Have Killed Up To 48,000 Civilians Since 9\/11<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->By Kenny Stancil<br \/>\nCommonDreams.org<\/p>\n<p>Airstrikes conducted by the\u00a0United States have\u00a0<strong>killed between 22,000 and 48,000 civilians since September 11, 2001<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/airwars.org\/news-and-investigations\/tens-of-thousands-of-civilians-likely-killed-by-us-in-forever-wars\/\">according to<\/a>\u00a0a report published Monday by Airwars, a military watchdog that monitors and seeks to reduce civilian harm in violent conflict zones.<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis, released ahead of\u00a0the 20th anniversary of the 9\/11 terrorist attacks and the retaliatory launch of the so-called &#8220;War on Terror,&#8221; came just days after a U.S. drone strike\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/08\/30\/us-drone-attack-kills-least-10-afghan-civilians-including-6-children\">killed<\/a>\u00a0at least 10 members of a single family in Kabul amid the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-video\" class=\"Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_video_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/airstrikes.png?itok=CRiEbkoj\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"326\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"3bbb2fa0-f091-40ed-8ea3-cca109fff7bc\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>US airstrikes near Kobani, Syria. via Reuters<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most media accounts point out that more than 7,000 U.S. service members have died in post-9\/11 wars, but only some go on to state the massive civilian death toll, and &#8220;almost exclusively in generalities,&#8221; researchers lamented.<\/p>\n<p>While Brown University&#8217;s Costs of War project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/watson.brown.edu\/costsofwar\/\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that over 387,000 civilians have been killed as a result of the War on Terror,\u00a0Airwars sought to answer a specific question:\u00a0<strong>How many civilians have likely been killed by U.S. airstrikes in the last 20 years?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The answer, Airwars found, is least 22,679, and\u00a0<strong>potentially as many 48,308 civilians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the imprecision of their estimate, the group noted that &#8220;the gap between these two figures reflects the many unknowns when it comes to civilian harm in war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Belligerents rarely track the effects of their own actions\u2014and even then do so poorly,&#8221; researchers wrote. &#8220;It is left to local communities, civil society, and international agencies to count the costs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-1\" class=\"Advert_centered__2tRj9 Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Pentagon has declared a minimum of 91,340\u00a0airstrikes\u00a0in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen<\/strong>\u2014seven countries the U.S. military invaded or assaulted with bombs or drones\u2014in the past 20 years. Notable peaks occurred during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and between 2015 and 2017, the height of the military offensive against ISIS in Iraq, Syria, and Libya.<\/p>\n<p>Given the dubious nature of\u00a0data supplied by the U.S. military\u2014which notoriously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/07\/06\/warren-and-khanna-demand-probe-undercounting-civilians-killed-us-military\">undercounts<\/a>\u00a0civilian fatalities\u2014Airwars\u00a0&#8220;gathered together every reliable assessment of direct civilian harm caused by U.S. actions&#8221; to construct a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1wX5x-Cb0HQS_EwZ24iDjWKcMZHiaM8wJ6PU0YPd3EQg\/edit#gid=542451357\">dataset<\/a>\u00a0that includes information from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Iraq Body Count,\u00a0<em>The Nation<\/em>, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, and their own previous studies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/airwars1.png?itok=_k8b2Lal\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/airwars1.png?itok=_k8b2Lal\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/airwars1.png?itok=_k8b2Lal\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f7c66465-b3e2-4e8d-ad38-9ba988245448\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wherever possible we sought to measure civilian harm just from U.S. airstrikes but in some cases, such as the first years of the Iraq invasion, it was impossible to disaggregate airstrikes from artillery fire and other heavy munitions, which were therefore included,&#8221; researchers noted. &#8220;Likewise in some U.S.-led coalitions it was impossible to determine whether each individual strike was American, though U.S. airpower has dominated all such campaigns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Based on its comprehensive review of credible sources,\u00a0<strong>Airwars\u00a0identified 2003 as the deadliest year of the War on Terror, &#8220;when a minimum of 5,529 civilians were reported to have been killed by U.S. actions.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-2\" class=\"Advert_centered__2tRj9 Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The next deadliest year was 2017, when at least 4,931 civilians were likely killed, the vast majority in alleged coalition bombing of Iraq and Syria,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0researchers wrote. &#8220;However, if we include maximum estimates of civilian harm then 2017 was in fact the worst year for civilian casualties, with up to 19,623 killed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/airwars2.png?itok=0bzkbqIn\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/airwars2.png?itok=0bzkbqIn\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/airwars2.png?itok=0bzkbqIn\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"324\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"3778c4be-aff1-42cc-a377-41cd53ed1a4e\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Airwars, 97% of reported civilian deaths during the War on Terror took place in three countries\u2014<strong>Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/airwars3.png?itok=Hj9MYpmq\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/airwars3.png?itok=Hj9MYpmq\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/airwars3.png?itok=Hj9MYpmq\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"327\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"058c59b3-d4fa-4438-a56f-8277e4f5f6a0\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joe Dyke, senior investigator at Airwars,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/september-11-attacks-us-air-strikes-directly-killed-civilians-thousands\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>Middle East Eye<\/em>\u00a0that &#8220;for much of the last 20 years people living in Washington or New York could have been forgiven for forgetting their country was at war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether a drone strike in a Yemeni\u00a0village or a military base in rural Afghanistan,\u00a0<strong>it often felt far removed\u2014almost another world<\/strong>\u2014but that isn&#8217;t how it felt for those millions of people living in those conflicts,&#8221;
