The Secretary of State made the announcement on Thursday evening, as a local CBS affiliate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dfw.cbslocal.com\/2021\/09\/23\/texas-secretary-states-office-announces-full-forensic-audit-2020-general-election-in-four-texas-counties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Texas Secretary of State\u2019s office announced on Thursday, September 23 it has begun a forensic audit of the 2020 election in three North Texas counties, Dallas, Tarrant and Collin along with Harris County.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement sent to CBS 11, it said in part: Under existing Texas laws, the Secretary of State has the authority to conduct a full and comprehensive forensic audit. We anticipate the Legislature will provide funds for this purpose.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Texas Secretary of State issued a statement on the upcoming forensic audit:<\/p>\n<p><em>Under existing Texas laws, the Secretary of State has the authority to conduct a full and comprehensive forensic audit of any election and has already begun the process in Texas\u2019 two largest Democrat counties and two largest Republican counties\u2014Dallas, Harris, Tarrant, and Collin\u2014for the 2020 election. We anticipate the Legislature will provide funds for this purpose.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">\n<div class=\"ai-attributes\">\n<div class=\"code-block-label\">Advertisements<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Donald Trump earlier backed Texas\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/873\/billtext\/pdf\/HB00016I.pdf#navpanes=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Bill 16<\/a>\u00a0in an open letter to Governor Greg Abbott:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBills to audit elections in your great state\u2019s House and Senate were considered during Texas\u2019 Second Special Session. Instead, the legislature passed a watered-down amendment that doesn\u2019t even apply to the 2020 Presidential Election. This short amendment doesn\u2019t answer the questions Texans have about the last election. Texans demand a real audit to completely address their concerns.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In related election integrity news, the Arizona election audit draft report has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beckernews.com\/arizona-election-audit-draft-report-leaked-ahead-of-major-announcement-on-alarming-findings-41841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaked to the press<\/a>.
