Multiple states have seen numbers similar to or even higher than previous peaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We thought we were out of the woods,<\/strong>\u201d Dr. Michael Saag,\u00a0professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham\u2019s Division of Infectious Diseases, told The Epoch Times. \u201cThe end of June seemed like everything was settling down.\u00a0<strong>And then July 4 weekend hit, and that was coincident with Delta really exploding, and throughout July, and especially August, all hell broke loose<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New cases peaked in Alabama on Aug. 15. They\u2019ve since dropped 70 percent. Hospitalizations peaked around the same time. They\u2019ve decreased about 62 percent as of Oct. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, both cases and hospitalizations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/covid-19-cases-fall-by-20-percent-across-the-us-in-past-week-cdc_4025052.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have dropped<\/a>\u00a0since hitting peaks in late August and early September.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/dr-scott-harris-of-alabama-1200x800.jpg?itok=PXHvqVwY\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"d6605cd0-7799-4700-a5d1-77544c6775d5\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>Dr. Scott Harris, Alabama\u2019s state health officer, points at a computer screen in his office in Montgomery, Ala., on June 29, 2021. (Elijah Nouvelage\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>\u2018Humbled\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-3\" class=\"Advert_centered__2tRj9 Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_3_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Scientists are becoming more aware that the CCP virus is different than any other virus.<\/p>\n<p>The epidemic \u201cis almost impossible to predict,\u201d Saag said. \u201c<strong>I\u2019ve been humbled tremendously about this epidemic in terms of having no ability to predict, really, what to expect<\/strong>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I\u00a0would not be telling the truth if I told you I knew<\/strong>,\u201d Dr. Scott Harris, Alabama\u2019s state health officer, said during his weekly update on Friday when asked why cases in the state have gone down so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Federal health officials and modelers have consistently been wrong with predictions, including models that vastly overestimated how many people would need hospital care last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings have changed. We didn\u2019t know things early on,\u201d Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during a recent appearance on Hugh Hewitt\u2019s radio show.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-4\" class=\"Advert_centered__2tRj9 Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_4_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>One problem stems from counting hospitalizations, Atlas noted. Approximately half of COVID-19 hospitalizations may have been admitted \u201cfor another reason entirely,\u201d researchers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/article\/rs-898254\/v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said last month<\/a>. That\u2019s a major issue when counting child hospitalizations. Many of the children have respiratory syncytial virus, which is more dangerous to young kids than COVID-19.<\/p>\n<h2>Mandates Disputed<\/h2>\n<p>Governors in many states imposed harsh restrictions last year when the pandemic first started. Others have continued issuing orders, including mask mandates.<\/p>\n<p>Governors in southern states were hammered earlier this year for largely opposing mandates. President Joe Biden on multiple occasions blamed them for the rise in metrics. He suggested the opposition was contributing to the spike in metrics in southern states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe escalation of cases is particularly concentrated in states with low vaccination rates. Just two states, Florida and Texas, account for one-third of all new COVID-19 cases in the entire country. Just two states,\u201d Biden told a press conference in August. At a separate briefing, he said masks and vaccines are the two best ways to protect against COVID-19 and alleged governors trying to forbid mask mandates for schools were \u201csetting a dangerous tone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the governors pushed back, and an increasing number of officials say the effectiveness of the mandates is unclear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe data and the science doesn\u2019t back up\u201d more restrictive measures<\/strong>, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, a Republican, told reporters this week. \u201cFor instance, I think there\u2019s seven states across the country that still have a state of emergency and math mandates. Their data\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/virus-tolls-similar-despite-governors-contrasting-actions_3732095.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doesn\u2019t look any different than ours<\/a>. In fact, it\u2019s worse than ours. So their mitigation measures haven\u2019t worked. And you see this time and time again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Vermont are encouraging mask wearing in certain conditions and urging everybody to get vaccinated but have avoided mask and vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n<p>Vermont has the lowest COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 residents, according to an age adjustment\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/13M1Lzxg_oddsxPMm3AgjxNjtplfFJj6xLpJ3scqVbC8\/edit#gid=207474440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mortality data<\/a>\u00a0reported to the federal government. Hawaii, which has imposed some of the strictest measures anywhere in the world, is second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve made decisions based on the disease burden in our community, daily new case counts, test positivity rates, resource capacity such as health care staffing, emergency department capacity, oxygen, and the number of available hospital bed and ICU units. And we\u2019ve been successful,\u201d Hawaii Gov. David Ige, a Democrat, told a press conference on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Even after the recent spike in Florida, which saw its highest hospitalization totals during the pandemic, the state is 27th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The dramatic decline in COVID-19 metrics in the state \u201chappened without lockdowns, mask mandates, or vaccine passports,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Christina Pushaw, press secretary for Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, told The Epoch Times via email.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis prioritized early treatment of COVID-19, primarily through monoclonal antibodies, a drug shown in studies to prevent hospitalizations, as well as vaccinating the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot we still don\u2019t know about COVID-19. (Caleb Jones\/AP Photo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Moving Forward<\/h2>\n<p>Experts believe higher vaccination rates will help protect against future waves, especially among people who don\u2019t have antibodies from recovering from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should try to make sure that everybody who is old who hasn\u2019t had COVID gets vaccinated,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Martin Kulldorff, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a senior scholar at the Brownstone Institute for Social and Economic Research who has advised DeSantis, told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a series or group of incredibly effective vaccines if we can only get people to roll up their sleeves and get it,\u201d Saag said.<\/p>\n<p>While the number of vaccinated Americans getting infected, hospitalized, and dying continues to rise, data from states across the country do\u00a0not track prior immunity, though patients are often asked if they have had COVID-19 when being admitted to hospitals.
