In January 2021, tech giants such as Microsoft, Oracle, and MITRE Corporation announced their launch of the\u00a0Vaccination Credential Initiative<\/a>\u00a0(VCI) in partnership with healthcare companies.<\/p>\n

On their\u00a0website<\/a>, the VCI describes itself as an alliance of private and public organizations dedicated to the development of the \u2018issuance of verifiable health credentials\u2019 bound to an individual\u00a0digital identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The VCI idea depends upon a common platform from which digital wallets can be created, and on the VCI website they call for\u00a0\u201cparticipating organizations to commit to implementing, testing, and refining the SMART Health Cards Framework within their sphere of influence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

According to VCI, their\u00a0\u2018SMART Health Cards\u2019<\/em>\u00a0are meant to\u00a0\u201cwork across organizational and jurisdictional boundaries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

SMART health cards<\/em>\u00a0as of now include a person\u2019s name, gender, birth date, phone number, and email address, as well as vaccination status. Developers hope, however, that these cards will eventually become all-encompassing universal digital identities that reside within a universal digital wallet.<\/p>\n
