The US military is set to hold expansive combat drills across North and South Carolina, warning residents that special operations trainees may fire off blank rounds and flares while simulating battle against \u201cguerrilla\u201d forces.<\/p>\n

Dubbed \u2018Robin Sage\u2019, the\u00a0\u201cunconventional warfare exercise\u201d<\/em>\u00a0will be held between January 22 and February 4 on private land in dozens of counties in the south, the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School said in a statement\u00a0cited<\/a>\u00a0by local media.<\/p>\n

The drill will stage a mock fight with a\u00a0\u201cresistance movement\u201d<\/em>\u00a0made up of\u00a0\u201cguerrilla freedom fighters\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in the fictional nation of\u00a0\u201cPineland,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the warfare center said, noting they will act as\u00a0\u201crealistic opposing forces\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to the special ops candidates. Robin Sage serves as the final test in the elite Special Forces Qualification Course, an intensive training program for the Army\u2019s Green Berets.<\/p>\n

Trainees will be placed in an environment of\u00a0\u201cpolitical instability characterized by armed conflict,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which will force soldiers to\u00a0\u201canalyze and solve problems\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in a\u00a0\u201creal-world\u201d<\/em>\u00a0setting \u2013 all the while facing down\u00a0\u201cguerrillas\u201d<\/em>\u00a0selected from Fort Bragg, as well as some specially trained civilian volunteers who will act as\u00a0\u201crole players\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to add\u00a0\u201crealism\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to the drill.<\/p>\n

The special warfare center was quick to warn that\u00a0\u201cresidents may hear blank gunfire and see occasional flares\u201d<\/em>\u00a0during the exercise, adding that\u00a0\u201ccontrols are in place to ensure there is no risk to persons or property.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Though variations of the Robin Sage drill have been held since 1974, a previous iteration in 2002 saw a local sheriff\u2019s deputy\u00a0fatally shoot<\/a>\u00a0one soldier and seriously wound another, mistaking them for criminals. Since then, the military has prioritized advance public notice of the combat simulation in an effort to avoid similar tragedies, telling any concerned residents to\u00a0\u201ccontact local law enforcement officials, who will immediately contact exercise control officials.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Other safety measures to be implemented for this year\u2019s drill include formal written notification to local police and sheriff\u2019s departments and thorough briefing to all participants on what to do if they make contact with law enforcement, while students will also wear\u00a0\u201cdistinctive\u201d<\/em>\u00a0armbands to show they are taking part in the exercise.<\/p>\n

While the special forces school did not specify exact locations where the drill will be held, it noted that it would take place across 25 counties in North Carolina \u2013 including Wake County, its largest region by population \u2013 as well as three others in South Carolina.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
