Anthony Fauci\u2019s wife \u2013 who is also head of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center \u2013 authored a paper defending the ethics of corporations \u201cpressuring employees to get vaccinated\u201d and \u201cembarrass[ing] vaccine resistors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study \u2013 \u201cThe Ethics of Encouraging Employees to Get the COVID\u201119 Vaccination<\/em><\/a>\u201d \u2013 was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center and the National Human Genome Research Institute and counted Christine Grady, Fauci\u2019s wife, amongst its authors.<\/p>\n

Published in March 2022, the paper followed attempts by the White House as well as Democratic<\/a>\u00a0Party politicians across America to mandate COVID-19 vaccination<\/a> for federal and state workers.<\/p>\n

Grady\u2019s paper focuses on the \u201cethics of encouragement strategies aimed at overcoming vaccine reluctance (which can be due to resistance, hesitance, misinformation, or inertia) to facilitate voluntary employee vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grady<\/a> and her three co-authors outline how it is \u201cethically acceptable\u201d to \u201csubtly pressure employees to get vaccinated\u201d:<\/p>\n

While employment-based vaccine encouragement may raise privacy and autonomy concerns, and though some employers might hesitate to encourage employees to get vaccinated, our analysis suggests ethically acceptable ways to inform, encourage, strongly encourage, incentivize, and even subtly pressure employees to get vaccinated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While discussing vaccine mandates, the paper posits they can \u201cbe ethically appropriate\u201d if there is \u201cclear articulation about the consequences of not complying with the policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn that circumstance, employees have a choice between getting vaccinated or accepting the consequences of a choice to remain unvaccinated,\u201d it explains.<\/p>\n

Grady outlines other tactics employers could use to boost COVID-19 vaccination rates within their company, such as sharing \u201ctargeted statistics (such as 75% of the company or unit have been vaccinated) to spur competition or even implicitly embarrass vaccine resistors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere can be social consequences associated with peer communication about vaccination, such as stigma and ostracization of those not vaccinated,\u201d the paper asserts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals who choose to make the workplace less safe for others through their vaccine refusal should be able to foresee the possibility of this kind of social consequence,\u201d it continues, appearing to endorse the aforementioned \u201cstigma and ostracization\u201d of individuals unvaccinated against COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a policy is tied to group vaccination metrics, unvaccinated employees may feel implicit (or explicit) pressure from peers or supervisors to help the group meet its return-to-work goals,\u201d Grady and her co-authors outlined before describing the approach as \u201cethically appropriate\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite worries about a perception of unfairness, we argue that the selective easing of public health restrictions is ethically appropriate when done transparently and tied to objective public health guidance.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The unearthed paper comes amidst controversy over Fauci\u2019s decision<\/a>\u00a0to fund research on \u201ckiller<\/a>\u201d bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Additionally,\u00a0Grady\u2019s<\/a> prominent role in supervising the ethics of NIH research and policy appear to present a conflict of interest given her husband\u2019s role in shaping America\u2019s COVID-19 response and vaccination\u00a0guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n
