British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that he takes\u00a0\u201cfull responsibility\u201d<\/em>\u00a0for more than a dozen parties held at Downing Street and Whitehall as Britain was under coronavirus restrictions. However, the PM rejected calls from the opposition to step down, and said that he wants to\u00a0\u201cmove on\u201d<\/em>\u00a0from the \u2018Partygate\u2019 scandal.<\/p>\n

Earlier, a long-awaited report blamed\u00a0\u201cfailures of leadership and judgement\u201d<\/em>\u00a0at Johnson\u2019s office for allowing the parties to take place. Senior civil servant Sue Gray investigated 16 gatherings that took place at government buildings during Britain\u2019s nationwide lockdowns of 2020 and early 2021, and concluded that\u00a0“many of these events should not have been allowed to happen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Johnson, who was photographed attending several of these events, must\u00a0\u201cbear responsibility for this culture,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the report added.<\/p>\n

Emails from Johnson\u2019s staffers mentioned\u00a0\u201cdrunkenness\u201d<\/em>\u00a0at one event that the PM attended virtually in December 2020, while members of staff\u00a0\u201cdrank excessively\u201d<\/em>\u00a0at another gathering three days later at the prime minister\u2019s residence. At the time of the\u00a0\u201ccrowded and noisy\u201d<\/em>\u00a0party, ordinary Britons were confined to their homes and restrictions on gatherings of more than two people were in place in London.<\/p>\n

\u201cI take full responsibility for everything that took place on my watch,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Johnson told Parliament on Wednesday. While Johnson insisted that his\u00a0\u201cattendance at these moments, brief as it was, has not been found to be outside the rules,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said that\u00a0\u201cclearly this was not the case\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as some events went on long into the night after he had left.<\/p>\n

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer \u2013 who himself is being\u00a0investigated<\/a>\u00a0for drinking with staff during lockdown in 2021 \u2013 described the report as a\u00a0\u201ccatalog of criminality,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and urged Johnson to\u00a0\u201cdo the decent thing and step down.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Amid condemnation from Labour, some of his own MPs, and calls to resign from the SNP\u2019s Ian Blackford, Johnson said that he was\u00a0\u201chumbled\u201d<\/em>\u00a0by the investigation, but wants to\u00a0\u201cmove on\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and stay in power.<\/p>\n

Aside from being blamed in Gray\u2019s report, Johnson has also been fined \u00a350 ($62) for attending a surprise birthday party thrown for him in June 2020. Altogether, London Metropolitan Police have issued more than 100 fines to officials who attended the parties mentioned in the report.<\/p>\n
