{"id":117920,"date":"2022-05-28T15:51:06","date_gmt":"2022-05-28T19:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=117920"},"modified":"2022-05-28T15:51:06","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T19:51:06","slug":"operation-torch-new-mexico-executed-by-the-u-s-forest-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=117920","title":{"rendered":"<h2><b>OPERATION TORCH NEW MEXICO<\/b>: Executed by the U.S. Forest Service<\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Massive New Mexico Fire Started<br \/>\nBy U.S. Forest Service<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p><strong>The largest wildfire in New Mexico history\u2014which is still burning\u2014was started by the U.S. Forest Service, federal investigators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/santafe\/news-events\/?cid=FSEPRD1027912\">announced<\/a>\u00a0Friday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The catastrophe began as two fires that merged into one. Both wildfires have now been conclusively traced to planned burns conducted by the Forest Service. Planned or &#8220;prescribed&#8221; burns are used to reduce the threat of extreme fires by reducing the amount of dry fuel in the forest.<\/p>\n<p>So far,\u00a0<strong>the New Mexico fire has destroyed 330 homes and scorched some 500 square miles. The cost of battling the blaze has surpassed $130 million, and rises another $5 million each day,<\/strong>\u00a0according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fires-new-mexico-forests-santa-fe-climate-and-environment-1e4e25c80eab9c1bcb80a5d97da4f768\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hermits Peak Fire started on April 6. On April 19, the Calf Canyon Fire\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/santafe\/news-events\/?cid=FSEPRD1027912\">sprang<\/a>\u00a0from a reignited &#8220;burn pile&#8221; that had been dormant through three winter snow events. They merged on April 22, and their destructive march across the Land of Enchantment still hasn&#8217;t ended.<\/p>\n<p>On May 13, New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2022\/05\/13\/governor-requests-greater-federal-assistance-for-new-mexicans-asks-federal-government-to-cover-100-of-disaster-costs\/\">asked<\/a>\u00a0the federal government to cover 100% of the response and recovery costs. Following the Forest Service announcement, Grisham\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2022\/05\/27\/governor-lujan-grisham-statement-on-cause-of-calf-canyon-fire\/\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe pain and suffering of New Mexicans caused by the actions of the U.S. Forest Service\u2014an agency that is intended to be a steward of our lands\u2014is unfathomable.<\/strong>\u00a0This is a first step toward the federal government taking full responsibility for the largest wildfire in state history.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On May 20, Forest Service Chief Randy Moore\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/news\/releases\/statement-forest-service-chief-randy-moore-announcing-pause-prescribed-fire\">announced<\/a>, &#8220;I am initiating a pause on prescribed fire operations on National Forest System lands\u00a0while we conduct a 90-day review of\u00a0protocols, decision support tools and practices ahead of planned operations this this fall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a typical year, the Forest Service conducts 4,500 prescribed burns.\u00a0<strong>&#8220;In 99.84% of cases, prescribed fires go as planned,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0said Moore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As New Mexicans can attest, the other 0.16% can be a doozie.\u00a0<\/strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwcg.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/wfldp\/docs\/sr-cg-gao-lessons-learned-testimony-aug-2000.pdf\">2000 Cerro Grande Fire<\/a>\u00a0in New Mexico also started as a prescribed burn.
