class=\"s1\">American presidents have habitually kowtowed to Turkish demands. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, President Trump\u2019s business investments in Turkey, Turkish-tainted associates, and baffling deference to President Erdogan spawned an exceptionally troubling record.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That record could provide additional fodder for Trump\u2019s Republican, Democratic, and Justice Department (DOJ) foes, especially as Turkey remains a rogue NATO member and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnd.com\/2022\/06\/bizarro-terrorist-turkey-accuses-finland-sweden-supporting-terrorists\/\"><span class=\"s2\">supporter<\/span><\/a> of international terrorism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Below is a mere fraction of the dismal Trump-Turkish saga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>A Little Conflict of Interest<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I have a little conflict of interest\u201d regarding Turkey, admitted Trump in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ndeed, since 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/borzoudaragahi\/trumps-deals-in-turkey-align-him-with-powerful-partners\"><span class=\"s2\">Trump Towers\/Mall<\/span><\/a> in Istanbul has earned him a reported $10 million in naming rights.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Mehmet Ali Yalcindag is Trump\u2019s Turkish partner in that venture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s chaired the Turkey-U.S. Business Council (TAIK) \u2014 linked to the Turkish government \u2014 since 2018.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was also reportedly an intermediary between Berat Albayrak (Erdogan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/zeenews.india.com\/world\/corruption-allegations-bring-embarrassment-to-turkish-president-erdogan-dent-his-caliphate-project-2333763.html\"><span class=\"s2\">shady<\/span><\/a> son-in-law) and Jared Kushner (Trump\u2019s son-in-law).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2020, Yalcindag\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/trump-towers-istanbul-partner-lobbied-president-and-cabinet-on-pandemic\/\"><span class=\"s2\">letters<\/span><\/a> to Trump\u2019s Agriculture, Commerce, and Energy secretaries lobbied for increased business with Turkey.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yalcindag conspicuously cc\u2019d Trump, thereby apparently (and inappropriately) leveraging their business partnership.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">From 2013 until late 2020, DC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/boom-times-for-turkeys-lobbyists-in-trumps-washington\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Mercury Public Affairs<\/span><\/a> served as TAIK\u2019s registered Turkish foreign agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Following Trump\u2019s inauguration, Mercury hired his communications director, Bryan Lanza, and registered him as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legistorm.com\/pro_news\/2118\/ex-trump-aide-files-as-turkish-agent.html\"><span class=\"s2\">Turkish agent<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ballard Partners, headed by top Trump fundraiser Brian Ballard, also soon became a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/04\/02\/most-powerful-lobbyist-in-trump-washington-217759\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Turkish agent<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Donald Jr.\u2019s Post-Thanksgiving Turkey Trot<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Donald Trump Jr. went hunting in Antalya, Turkey right after his father\u2019s election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Accompanied by an unnamed businessman <\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> <i>Yalcindag<\/i>, allegedly <\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2014 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Donald Jr. bagged two wild goats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The self-indulgent trip to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/reports\/2021-country-reports-on-human-rights-practices\/turkey\/\"><span class=\"s2\">repressive<\/span><\/a> country highlighted the Trump family\u2019s Turkish <i>blind spot<\/i>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Erdogan\u2019s Capital Thuggery<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On May 16, 2017, Erdogan ordered his bodyguards to attack peaceful protesters outside his ambassador\u2019s residence in Washington, DC.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Erdogan had met Trump earlier that day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The mostly American demonstrators were stomped and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nightly-news\/video\/disturbing-videos-show-turkish-president-s-guards-beating-protesters-in-dc-946545731743\"><span class=\"s2\">bloodied<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Several were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/17\/politics\/turkey-erdogan-incident\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">hospitalized<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A policeman was injured. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The U.S. House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-resolution\/354\/text\"><span class=\"s2\">unanimously<\/span><\/a> demanded prosecution of Erdogan\u2019s bodyguards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trump, in contrast, remained shamefully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2019\/01\/trump-stands-by-while-erdogan-orders-attack-protesters\/580093\/\"><span class=\"s2\">silent<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That August the DOJ charged over a dozen of Erdogan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/08\/29\/turkish-bodyguards-charged-in-bloody-may-embassy-beatdown\/\"><span class=\"s2\">goons<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, they\u2019d long since returned to Turkey on Erdogan\u2019s order. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Scandalously<i>, <\/i>in 2018, the DOJ <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/22\/politics\/turkey-erdogan-security-charges-dropped\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">dropped<\/span><\/a> charges against several of the bodyguards one day before Secretary of State Rex Tillerson <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/15\/politics\/tillerson-erdogan-turkey-meeting-no-translator\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">visited<\/span><\/a> Ankara.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Erdogan and his goons won.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Americans lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trump, Giuliani, and Zarrab\/Halkbank<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">President Trump allowed former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani to lobby for Turkey\u2019s interests and against America\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Giuliani, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstateny.com\/personality\/2018\/05\/kiss-and-tell-a-brief-history-of-rudy-giuliani-and-donald-trump\/178512\/\"><span class=\"s2\">longtime Trump surrogate<\/span><\/a>, was a partner at the Greenberg Traurig law firm from 2016 to 2018.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was a registered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2021\/07\/rudy-giuliani-scrutinized-foreign-lobbying-trump\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Turkish agent<\/span><\/a> from 2017 to 2020.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Trump hired Giuliani as a cybersecurity advisor just before the 2017 inauguration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2016, the Feds indicted Reza Zarrab, a filthy rich Turkish-Iranian-Azerbaijani citizen, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/how-iran-used-an-international-playboy-to-launder-oil-money\/frequently-asked-questions-who-is-reza-zarrab\"><span class=\"s2\">violating<\/span><\/a> U.S. sanctions against Iran through Turkey\u2019s Halkbank.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The latter is majority-owned by Turkey, close to Erdogan, and was <i>also<\/i> a target of Federal prosecutors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In February of 2017, Giuliani represented Zarrab in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/20\/nyregion\/rudy-giuliani-reza-zarrab-iran-sanctions-case.html\"><span class=\"s2\">meeting with Erdogan<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For Trump appointee\/confidant Giuliani to advocate for Zarrab while Trump\u2019s DOJ was prosecuting the scoundrel smacked of a conflict of interest.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet Trump let Giuliani plow ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In early 2017, Giuliani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/trumps-corrupt-dealings-with-turkey-are-some-of-the-most-startling-stories-in-boltons-book\/2020\/06\/23\/0c24a5a2-b59a-11ea-a8da-693df3d7674a_story.html\"><span class=\"s2\">pressed<\/span><\/a> the DOJ to make \u201csome agreement\u201d with Turkey to bring about Zarrab\u2019s release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On March 11, 2017, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/bharara-outraged-over-turkeys-erdogan-to-ask-us-administration-to-sack-an-american-prosecutor\/\"><span class=\"s2\">mysteriously<\/span><\/a> fired Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for Manhattan who had been prosecuting Zarrab.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The president also fired (June 20, 2020) Bharara\u2019s successor, Geoffrey Berman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsls.com\/news\/politics\/2020\/06\/20\/doj-tries-to-oust-us-attorney-investigating-trump-allies\/\"><span class=\"s2\">allegedly<\/span><\/a> for continuing to prosecute the <i>related<\/i> Halkbank case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/trump-asked-tillerson-to-get-doj-to-drop-case-against-giuliani-client-in-2017-report-2019-10-09\"><span class=\"s2\">asked<\/span><\/a> Secretary Tillerson to pressure the DOJ into dropping the Zarrab case.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Tillerson rightly refused.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Erdogan\u2019s behest, Trump also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/29\/us\/politics\/trump-erdogan-halkbank.html\"><span class=\"s2\">reportedly<\/span><\/a> asked Attorney General Bill Barr and Federal prosecutors to go easy on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justsecurity.org\/71694\/trump-barr-and-the-halkbank-case-timeline\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Halkbank<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turkey\u2019s interests trumped America\u2019s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trump\u2019s Belated Sanctions<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Congress\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/section-231-of-the-countering-americas-adversaries-through-sanctions-act-of-2017\/\"><span class=\"s2\">CAATSA<\/span><\/a> law (August 2017) required America to penalize foreign entities doing business with Russia\u2019s defense industry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having bought Russian S-400 missiles, Turkey was an obvious offender.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yet Trump brazenly ignored CAATSA <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2020\/12\/trump-forced-to-finally-slap-sanctions-on-turkey-for-s-400-buy\/\"><span class=\"s2\">until<\/span><\/a> December of 2020 when Congressional pressure grew too great.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since S-400s can snoop on America\u2019s F-35 jet technology, the Pentagon insisted on Turkey\u2019s removal from the F-35 program. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, <i>only<\/i> in 2019, and after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/16\/politics\/trump-turkey-s400-sales\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>repeatedly making excuses<\/i><\/span><\/a><i> <\/i>for Erdogan\u2019s buying S-400s, did Trump bar Turkey from acquiring F-35s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Michael Flynn\u2018s Turkish Escapades<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a former Defense Intelligence Agency director, was a Trump campaign advisor and Trump\u2019s first National Security Advisor (NSA).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Flynn lasted just 22 days as NSA because he\u2019d misled Vice President Mike Pence about his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/transcripts-of-calls-between-flynn-russian-diplomat-show-they-discussed-sanctions\/2020\/05\/29\/cc3d29c6-a1f0-11ea-b5c9-570a91917d8d_story.html\"><span class=\"s2\">conversations<\/span><\/a> (December 2016) with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On July 15, 2016, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Flynn<i> <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/what-mike-flynn-did-for-turkey\"><span class=\"s2\">publicly<i> <\/i>supported<\/span><\/a><i> <\/i>the attempted Turkish coup against Erdogan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s4\">Yet on November 8 (Election Day) Flynn\u2019s article in DC\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/pundits-blog\/foreign-policy\/305021-our-ally-turkey-is-in-crisis-and-needs-our-support\/\"><span class=\"s2\">The Hill<\/span><\/a> made a U-turn.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Flynn <i>defended<\/i> Erdogan and thundered <i>against<\/i> Fethullah Gulen, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the Pennsylvania-based, expatriate Turkish cleric whom Erdogan blamed for the coup.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Perhaps because that summer and fall, the Flynn Intel Group was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/flynn-attended-intel-briefings-while-taking-money-lobby-turkey-n732041\"><span class=\"s2\">paid<\/span><\/a> over $500,000 by TAIK Chair Kamil Ekim Alptekin and his Inovo BV \u2014 a firm linked to the Turkish government \u2014 to work for Turkish interests and against Gulen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Under pressure, Flynn registered <i>retroactively<\/i> as a Turkish agent in March of 2017.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The DOJ eventually dropped charges against Flynn related to his talks with Amb. Kislyak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-55080923\"><span class=\"s2\">pardoned<\/span><\/a> Flynn in 2020.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Did Trump hire Flynn as NSA precisely<i> because<\/i> of Flynn\u2019s partnerships with TAIK, Alptekin, and Turkey?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It wouldn\u2019t surprise us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trump Endorsed Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Oz<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Mehmet Oz is a popular TV show host and a GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He\u2019s not a conservative.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At best, he\u2019s moderate or even liberal on <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/senate-candidate-dr-oz-once-003435253.html\"><span class=\"s2\">abortion<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dr-oz-gun-control-ideas\"><span class=\"s2\">gun control<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.towleroad.com\/2022\/07\/pa-senate-candidate-mehmet-oz-indicates-hed-vote-yes-on-same-sex-marriage-bill\/\"><span class=\"s2\">LGBTQ<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Curiously, though, this April Trump endorsed Oz over his unquestionably conservative GOP primary opponents, Kathy Barnette and David McCormick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trump had previously endorsed Sean Parnell for Senate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Only after Parnell dropped out on November 22, 2021 did Oz enter the race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Oz is an American-born Turkish citizen, served in the Turkish army, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mynbc15.com\/news\/nation-world\/dr-oz-voted-in-turkish-election-despite-skipping-american-primary-sparking-criticism\"><span class=\"s2\">voted<\/span><\/a> in Turkey\u2019s 2018 election.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>His campaign\u2019s financial disclosure <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/dr-oz-turkish-nationalist-pals-081225347.html\"><span class=\"s2\">omitted<\/span><\/a> his condominium in Fairview, New Jersey, occupied by two controversial Turkish nationalists.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s5\">Trump\u2019s Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, sai<\/span><span class=\"s1\">d Oz should <a class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And Melania Trump reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/dr-oz-fan-mar-lago-melania-trump-rcna20641\"><span class=\"s7\">likes<\/span><\/a> Oz.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Still, was Oz\u2019s Turkish background a factor in Trump\u2019s support?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Did Trump\u2019s Turkish network (including Erdogan) persuade him to endorse Oz? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trump Betrayed Anti-ISIS Partners<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As an <i>American ally<\/i>, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) \u201470,000 fighters \u2014 has sustained some 11,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/military-leaders-warn-trump-abandoning-ally-grave-mistake-2019-10\"><span class=\"s2\">casualties<\/span><\/a> in its brave fight <i>against <\/i>ISIS.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The SDF consists mainly of the Kurdish YPG (People&#8217;s Defense Units).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The rest are mixed, anti-ISIS Syrian militias.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Erdogan claims that the YPG is linked to the Kurdish PKK, which the U.S. regards as a terrorist organization.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Turkey, of course, remains a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neweurope.eu\/article\/turkey-a-state-sponsor-of-terrorism\/\"><span class=\"s2\">state sponsor of international terrorism<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On October 6, 2019, Trump informed Erdogan that American troops were withdrawing from the SDF\u2019s stronghold, <a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-8iGrTOGBpDQ\/XcRqd5qHvdI\/AAAAAAAAKzU\/r58NqfoC8f8291lBrov2l0A2TT5MTg3XQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/Euphrates%252BRiver%252BValley%252B-%252B16%252BOCT-01.jpg\"><span class=\"s2\">northeast Syria<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Trump thereby greenlighted Turkey\u2019s invasion of that region three days later. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cA stab in the back,\u201d declared the SDF of Trump\u2019s decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The U.S. House quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penncapital-star.com\/government-politics\/u-s-house-overwhelmingly-votes-to-condemn-trumps-syrian-troop-withdrawal\/\"><span class=\"s2\">voted<\/span><\/a> 354 to 60 to rebuke the administration and Turkey. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trump rationalized betraying the Kurds: \u201cThey didn\u2019t help us in WWII [and] Normandy.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The remark was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/10\/politics\/donald-trump-world-war-two-kurds-syria-fact-check\"><span class=\"s2\">historically preposterous<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed, Turkey itself was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/wwii-lesson-for-trump-turkey-was-in-bed-with-the-nazis\"><span class=\"s2\">pro-Nazi<\/span><\/a> during WWII.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Added Trump, \u201cWe like the Kurds.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 2017, though, he declared, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/boltons-book-reveals-trump-was-americas-first-anti-kurdish-president-632756\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI don\u2019t like Kurds.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turkey\u2019s onslaught killed hundreds of SDF members and forcibly displaced at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/more-160-000-have-fled-northern-syria-turkish-offensive-continues-n1066196\"><span class=\"s2\">160,000<\/span><\/a> civilians, including Kurds and Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thousands of ISIS members were being held in SDF prisons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Several hundred or more escaped due to Turkey\u2019s offensive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brett McGurk, formerly an anti-ISIS Presidential envoy, cited \u201cwar crimes\u201d by pro-Turkish forces during the invasion. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Retired U.S. General Joseph Votel warned that Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2019\/10\/danger-abandoning-our-partners\/599632\/\"><span class=\"s2\">abandonment<\/span><\/a> of the SDF damaged America\u2019s future \u201ccredibility and reliability.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite the invasion and Erdogan\u2019s Washington, DC thuggery in 2017, Trump hosted the Turkish autocrat on November 13, 2019. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c[I\u2019m] a big fan of the President,\u201d proclaimed Erdogan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, and vice versa, to America\u2019s detriment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Do the Right Thing<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The wider problem, of course, is that the State Department and our foreign policy establishment have long let Turkey dupe and emasculate them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If Trump runs for office again or stays in the public eye, he should ditch his Turkish investments, Turkish-tainted cronies, and Turkish fixation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s in his and America\u2019s best interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p
