WASHINGTON\u00a0\u2014 Attorney General William Barr said\u00a0violent protests that have erupted after the death of\u00a0George Floyd<\/a>\u00a0appear to be\u00a0organized by “anarchic” and “far left extremist groups”\u00a0pursuing their own aims.<\/p>\n Addressing “rioting” in many cities, Barr said, “the voices of peaceful protest are being hijacked by violent radical elements.”<\/p>\n “Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda,” he said. “In many places, it appears the violence is planned, organized and driven by anarchic and…far\u00a0left extremist groups using Antifa-like tactics.”<\/p>\n Barr said many are traveling from outside states to join protests.<\/p>\n Minnesota officials\u00a0said Saturday<\/a> many of the protesters in Minneapolis were from outside the state, and said they were investigating whether\u00a0some outside agitators had links to white supremacist groups.<\/p>\n Barr acknowledged\u00a0the “outrage” over Floyd’s death is “real and legitimate.”<\/p>\n Protests have erupted nationwide against police brutality and racial discrimination over the killing of\u00a0Floyd, a black man\u00a0who died in Minneapolis police custody this week after a white officer pinned him to\u00a0ground under his knee.<\/p>\n The Justice Department has\u00a0opened<\/a> an investigation into whether the officers involved in Floyd’s death committed federal civil rights violations.<\/p>\n “Accountability for his death must be addressed, and is being addressed, through the regular process of our criminal justice system, both at the state and at the federal level,” he said.\u00a0“That system is working and moving at exceptional speed.\u00a0 Already initial charges have been filed by the state.
