Now is not the time for normalization. Now is not the time to upgrade relations with the Assad regime,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/briefings\/department-press-briefing-february-27-2023\/#post-424481-TurkyeEgypt:~:text=Our%20position%20on%20the%20Assad,relationship%20with%20the%20Assad%20regime.\">State Department spokesman Ned Price said<\/a>\u00a0in response to the news of Egypt\u2019s foreign minister visiting Syria and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe we can fulfill and that countries around the world can fulfill both of these imperatives, addressing the humanitarian needs of the Turkish people, addressing the humanitarian needs of the Syrian people, without changing or upgrading their relationship with the Assad regime,\u201d Price added.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll from the earthquake stands at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/syria-egypt-foreign-minister-meets-assad-first-visit-war\">over 5,900 people in Syria and over 44,000 in Turkey,<\/a>\u00a0but the numbers are expected to rise. When the earthquake first hit,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2023\/02\/06\/after-earthquake-devastates-syria-us-shows-no-interest-in-lifting-sanctions\/\">Price said the US would not work with Assad\u2019s government\u00a0<\/a>on the relief effort, saying it would be \u201ccounterproductive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it\u2019s become clear that the US-backed regime change effort against Assad has failed, more countries in the region have been engaging with his government. Engagement with Assad has stepped up since the earthquake as Syria\u2019s neighbors are looking to help out.<\/p>\n<p>The US has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2023\/02\/12\/us-eases-some-sanctions-on-syria-for-180-days-after-earthquake\/\">issued a 180-day exemption<\/a>\u00a0for its sanctions on Syria that applies to transactions related to earthquake relief.
