Top Sweetener Officially Declared a Carcinogen<\/b><\/h1>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola<\/p>\n<div id=\"bcr_UpdPnlStory\">\n<div id=\"bcr_pnlStoryAtAGlance\" class=\"story-glance\" data-swiftype-name=\"saag\" data-swiftype-type=\"text\">\n<div id=\"bcr_divStoryImage\" class=\"story-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"bcr_imgStory\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/media.mercola.com\/ImageServer\/Public\/2023\/July\/Nonlead\/aspartame-carcinogenic-effects.jpg\" alt=\"aspartame carcinogenic effects\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-highlights\">\n<h3 id=\"expanderHead\" data-jsid=\"expanderHead\">STORY AT-A-GLANCE<\/h3>\n<div id=\"expanderContent\" data-jsid=\"expanderContent\">\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"bcr_rptStory_cslStory_0\">The World Health Organization has finally gotten around to declaring the popular artificial sweetener aspartame a potential carcinogen<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"bcr_rptStory_cslStory_1\">The ruling comes from sources with WHO\u2019s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), who said aspartame will be listed as \u201cpossibly carcinogenic to humans\u201d in July 2023<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"bcr_rptStory_cslStory_2\">I\u2019ve been warning about aspartame\u2019s cancer-causing potential since 2010, so you can see just how long this danger has been known<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"bcr_rptStory_cslStory_3\">For over a decade, researchers have been warning of aspartame\u2019s neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity, stating reevaluation of aspartame consumption is \u201curgent and cannot be delayed\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"bcr_rptStory_cslStory_4\">A 2022 large-scale cohort study found people who consumed higher levels of artificial sweeteners had higher risk of overall cancer compared to non-consumers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"bodytext\" class=\"bodytextdiv\" data-swiftype-name=\"postbody\" data-swiftype-type=\"text\">\n<p>The World Health Organization has finally gotten around to declaring the popular artificial sweetener aspartame a potential carcinogen.<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">1<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0I warned about aspartame\u2019s cancer-causing potential on my site over 25 years ago, in my best-selling book, \u201cSweet Deception: Why Splenda, NutraSweet, and the FDA May Be Hazardous to Your Health,\u201d in 2006, and in an article I wrote for The Huffington Post.<sup><span id=\"edn2\" data-hash=\"#ednref2\">2<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0It\u2019s since been deleted \u2014 but you can see just how long this danger has been known.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling comes from sources with WHO\u2019s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), who said aspartame will be listed as \u201cpossibly carcinogenic to humans\u201d in July 2023.<sup><span id=\"edn3\" data-hash=\"#ednref3\">3<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Additional findings from the Joint WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization&#8217;s Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), which is in the process of updating its aspartame risk assessment, are also expected.<sup><span id=\"edn4\" data-hash=\"#ednref4\">4<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Donald Rumsfeld\u2019s Hand in Aspartame\u2019s Approval<\/h2>\n<p>JECFA has vouched for aspartame\u2019s safety for decades, stating since 1981 that it\u2019s safe when consumed within accepted daily limits.<sup><span id=\"edn5\" data-hash=\"#ednref5\">5<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0It was 1981 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration first approved aspartame.<sup><span id=\"edn6\" data-hash=\"#ednref6\">6<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0At the time, the late Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. secretary of defense, was chairman of G.D. Searle, aspartame\u2019s manufacturer, and he was reportedly instrumental in its approval.<\/p>\n<p>At a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, the FDA had refused to approve aspartame due to concerns that it could induce brain tumors.<sup><span id=\"edn7\" data-hash=\"#ednref7\">7<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0The late John Olney, a renowned neuroscientist who tried to prevent aspartame\u2019s approval, also wrote a letter to the Board of Inquiry in 1987, warning of aspartame\u2019s neurotoxicity, including the potential for brain tumors and damage to children\u2019s brains.<sup><span id=\"edn8\" data-hash=\"#ednref8\">8<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0As reported by Rense.com:<sup><span id=\"edn9\" data-hash=\"#ednref9\">9<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"MidProductAd\"><\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cThe FDA had actually banned aspartame based on this finding, only to have Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld \u2026 vow to \u2018call in his markers,\u2019<sup><span id=\"edn10\" data-hash=\"#ednref10\">10<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0to get it approved.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan&#8217;s inauguration, Searle re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame in food sweetener, and Reagan&#8217;s new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the board of inquiry&#8217;s decision.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>It soon became clear that the panel would uphold the ban by a 3-2 decision, but Hull then installed a sixth member on the commission, and the vote became deadlocked. He then personally broke the tie in aspartame&#8217;s favor.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Hull later left the FDA under allegations of impropriety, served briefly as Provost at New York Medical College, and then took a position with Burston-Marsteller, the chief public relations firm for both Monsanto and GD Searle.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Aspartame\u2019s Cancer Link Known for Decades<\/h2>\n<p>Despite aspartame\u2019s approval, by 1987 a series of investigative reports raised concerns that the chemical\u2019s approval was mired by conflicts of interest, poor quality industry-funded research and revolving-door relationships between the FDA and the food industry.<sup><span id=\"edn11\" data-hash=\"#ednref11\">11<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>By 1996, a team with the department of psychiatry at Washington University Medical School questioned whether increasing brain tumor rates had an aspartame connection. \u201cAn exceedingly high incidence of brain tumors\u201d has been identified in aspartame-fed rats compared to rats not fed aspartame, they explained, adding:<sup><span id=\"edn12\" data-hash=\"#ednref12\">12<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cCompared to other environmental factors putatively linked to brain tumors, the artificial sweetener aspartame is a promising candidate to explain the recent increase in incidence and degree of malignancy of brain tumors.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, in 2006, a study led by Dr. Morando Soffritti, a cancer researcher from Italy who\u2019s the head of the European Ramazzini Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences, found that, even in low doses, animals were developing several different forms of cancer when fed aspartame.<sup><span id=\"edn13\" data-hash=\"#ednref13\">13<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That year, the team concluded aspartame was a \u201cmultipotential carcinogenic agent, even at a daily dose of 20 mg\/kg body weight, much less than the current acceptable daily intake\u201d and stated a reevaluation of aspartame consumption was \u201curgent and cannot be delayed.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn14\" data-hash=\"#ednref14\">14<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A 2007 follow-up study confirmed the findings of aspartame\u2019s \u201cmultipotential carcinogenicity,\u201d even at doses close to the acceptable daily intake for humans. Further, it also demonstrated that when lifespan exposure beginning in utero was assessed, aspartame\u2019s \u201ccarcinogenic effects are increased.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn15\" data-hash=\"#ednref15\">15<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0In 2010, Soffritti and colleagues again warned that aspartame was a carcinogenic agent in rats and mice.<sup><span id=\"edn16\" data-hash=\"#ednref16\">16<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<div class=\"download-desktop\">\n<h4><a id=\"bcr_SocialWidget3_pdfforarticlepost\" class=\"pdf-download\" href=\"https:\/\/media.mercola.com\/ImageServer\/Public\/2023\/July\/PDF\/aspartame-carcinogenic-effects-pdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"pdf\">Download PDF<\/a><\/h4>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Research Supporting Aspartame\u2019s Carcinogenicity Is Widespread<\/h2>\n<p>These studies were only the beginning of the evidence showing aspartame\u2019s cancer-causing potential. In 2012, Harvard researchers published a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which found:<sup><span id=\"edn17\" data-hash=\"#ednref17\">17<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn the most comprehensive long-term epidemiologic study, to our knowledge, to evaluate the association between aspartame intake and cancer risk in humans, we observed a positive association between diet soda and total aspartame intake and risks of NHL [non-Hodgkin lymphoma] and multiple myeloma in men and leukemia in both men and women.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adding further concerns over aspartame\u2019s safety, U.S. Right to Know reported:<sup><span id=\"edn18\" data-hash=\"#ednref18\">18<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn a 2014 commentary in American Journal of Industrial Medicine,<sup><span id=\"edn19\" data-hash=\"#ednref19\">19<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0the [Cesare] Maltoni [Cancer Research] Center researchers wrote that the studies submitted by G. D. Searle for market approval \u2018do not provide adequate scientific support for [aspartame\u2019s] safety.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In contrast, recent results of life-span carcinogenicity bioassays on rats and mice published in peer-reviewed journals, and a prospective epidemiological study, provide consistent evidence of [aspartame\u2019s] carcinogenic potential.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A 2020 study further supports the Ramazzini Institute\u2019s (RI) original findings, revealing a statistically significant increase in total hematopoietic and lymphoid tissue tumors (HLTs) and total leukemias and lymphomas in female rats exposed to aspartame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the HLT cases re-evaluation, the results obtained are consistent with those reported in the previous RI publication and reinforce the hypothesis that APM [aspartame] has a leukemogenic and lymphomatogenic effect,\u201d the researchers explained.<sup><span id=\"edn20\" data-hash=\"#ednref20\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Again in 2021, a review of the Ramazzini Institute data further confirmed that aspartame is carcinogenic in rodents. The researchers noted that their findings \u201cconfirm the very worrisome finding that prenatal exposure to aspartame increases cancer risk in rodent offspring. They validate the conclusions of the original RI studies.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn21\" data-hash=\"#ednref21\">21<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In response, they called on national and international public health agencies to reexamine aspartame\u2019s health risks, particularly prenatal and early postnatal exposures.<sup><span id=\"edn22\" data-hash=\"#ednref22\">22<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Consuming Artificial Sweeteners Increases Cancer Risks by 13%<\/h2>\n<p>In a 2022 study of 102,865 adults from France, published in PLOS Medicine, dietary intakes and consumption of artificial sweeteners were obtained and analyzed for associations with cancer incidence. The large-scale cohort study found that people who consumed higher levels of artificial sweeteners had a higher risk of overall cancer compared to non-consumers.<sup><span id=\"edn23\" data-hash=\"#ednref23\">23<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Among the artificial sweeteners studied, aspartame and acesulfame-K, in particular, were associated with increased cancer risk, while aspartame intake was linked to higher risks of breast cancer and obesity-related cancers, including stomach, liver, colon and rectal cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, total cancer risks increased by 13% among artificial sweetener consumers, while the risk of breast cancer rose by 22% and the risk of obesity-related cancers increased up to 15%.<sup><span id=\"edn24\" data-hash=\"#ednref24\">24<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0\u201cThese results suggest that artificial sweeteners, used in many food and beverage brands worldwide, may represent a modifiable risk factor for cancer prevention,\u201d the researchers noted,<sup><span id=\"edn25\" data-hash=\"#ednref25\">25<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0explaining:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c[E]xperts have urged for a re-evaluation by public health authorities of aspartame\u2019s role in cancer development, based on previous and recent findings in animal models, in vitro studies, and, to a lesser extent, human data. Findings about other artificial sweeteners also raise questions regarding their potential role in carcinogenesis based on in vivo studies.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>WHO Warns Against Artificial Sweeteners for Weight Control<\/h2>\n<p>Aspartame\u2019s cancer link is especially concerning given its prevalence in diet foods and drinks. Aspartame is used in 1,400 food products in France and more than 6,000 products around the globe. The chemical is commonly found in food products such as sugar-free gum, diet drink mixes and sodas, reduced-sugar condiments and tabletop sweeteners, including Equal and NutraSweet.<sup><span id=\"edn26\" data-hash=\"#ednref26\">26<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Its high level of sweetness \u2014 200 times greater than sugar<sup><span id=\"edn27\" data-hash=\"#ednref27\">27<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0\u2014 and low calories makes it popular among people looking to make their drinks and meals sweeter without the calories of a comparable amount of sugar.<\/p>\n<p>But, in addition to labeling the artificial sweetener as possibly carcinogenic, in May 2023, even the beyond-corrupted WHO released a guideline advising not to use non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) for weight control because they don\u2019t offer any long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children.<sup><span id=\"edn28\" data-hash=\"#ednref28\">28<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Previously, WHO conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis that revealed \u201cthere is no clear consensus on whether non-sugar sweeteners are effective for long-term weight loss or maintenance, or if they are linked to other long-term health effects at intakes within the ADI.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn29\" data-hash=\"#ednref29\">29<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The systematic review also suggested \u201cpotential undesirable effects from long-term use of NSS, such as an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality in adults.\u201d Even cancer was called out in analysis, which included 283 studies and found artificial sweeteners are linked to an increased risk of:<sup><span id=\"edn30\" data-hash=\"#ednref30\">30<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<table class=\"generic-table left-align\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Obesity<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">Type 2 diabetes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">High fasting glucose<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">All-cause mortality<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Cardiovascular events<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">Death from cardiovascular disease<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Stroke<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">High blood pressure<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Bladder cancer<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">Preterm birth and possible adiposity in offspring later in life<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Further, according to the WHO study:<sup><span id=\"edn31\" data-hash=\"#ednref31\">31<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cMechanisms by which NSS as a class of molecules might exert effects that increase risk for obesity and certain NCDs [non-communicable diseases] have been reviewed extensively and include interaction with extra-oral taste receptors, possibly with alteration of the gut microbiome.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Because sugars and all known NSS presumably elicit sweet taste through the TAS1R heterodimeric sweet-taste receptor, which has been identified not just in the oral cavity but in other glucose-sensing tissues, it is not surprising that such a group of vastly different chemical entities could be responsible for similar effects on health.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Artificial Sweeteners Aren\u2019t Worth the Risk<\/h2>\n<div class=\"video-rwd has-figcaption\">\n<figure class=\"op-interactive aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"iFrameResizer0\" class=\" mlazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bitchute.com\/embed\/coep6HrXQuKI\/\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mlazyload-src=\"https:\/\/www.bitchute.com\/embed\/coep6HrXQuKI\/\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><figcaption class=\"op-large op-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitchute.com\/video\/coep6HrXQuKI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Video Link<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear why WHO is suddenly warning the public about these products, when they\u2019ve been promoted by health officials for so long. But I\u2019ve been advising against their use from the start. Often, there are emotional drivers behind cravings for sweets, which is why I\u2019ve long recommended learning the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) a psychological acupressure tool, to overcome them.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond tackling your underlying emotions to stave off the urge to consume poisonous artificial sweeteners, consider keeping a stash of ripe fruit that can naturally fill these cravings. Additionally, if you are eating a high fat diet over 30%, then you will want to limit your carbs.
