CNN, MSNBC primetime ignore Seattle\u2019s plans to dismantle ‘CHOP’ zone after shootings<\/h1>\n

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced Monday that officials\u00a0would end the\u00a0police-free zone<\/a> known as the “Capitol Hill Organized Protest,” or “CHOP,”\u00a0after two recent shootings, one of which was deadly \u2013 but CNN and MSNBC didn\u2019t feel it was particularly newsworthy.<\/p>\n

News broke during the 7 p.m. ET hour on Monday that Seattle\u2019s mayor said the violence was distracting from changes sought by thousands of protesters seeking to address racial inequity and police brutality \u2013 but CNN\u2019s 7 p.m. program, \u201cErin Burnett Outfront\u201d did not mention the news as it unfolded.<\/p>\n

CNN continued to ignore the news during its primetime programming, as there was no coverage on back-to-back editions of \u201cAnderson Cooper 360\u201d from 8-10 p.m. ET or during Don Lemon\u2019s \u201cCNN Tonight,\u201d which aired from 10-midnight ET.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost mainstream media outlets have bent over backwards to portray the civil unrest as peaceful actions supporting the general aims of justice.\u00a0That narrative gets largely disrupted if those news organizations now focus on the chaos in places like Seattle,\u201d DePauw University professor and media critic Jeffrey McCall told Fox News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus, they ignore or downplay recent acts of lawlessness so as to not have to backtrack or explain away the simplistic manner in which they have covered events of recent weeks,\u201d McCall said.<\/p>\n

CNN did manage to briefly mention CHOP on Monday night, but only to note that Washington D.C. protestors were emulating Seattle\u2019s police-free zone.<\/p>\n

MSNBC completely ignored CHOP altogether from 7-midnight ET on Monday, as \u201cMSNBC Live,\u201d \u201cAll in with Chris Hayes,\u201d The Rachel Maddow Show,\u201d \u201cThe Last Word with Lawrence O\u2019Donnell and \u201cThe 11th Hour with Brian Williams\u201d all declined to report the news of Seattle\u2019s CHOP possibly drawing to a close.<\/p>\n

Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor told Fox News that the liberal media has \u201cbeen playing games\u201d with coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe media downplayed the threat of the virus at such mass events and then they did the same to the violence. The press act like showing what’s really going on during these riots — the hate against police, the violence, looting, arson and violence — would all aid Trump if the American public saw reality. So they hide it,\u201d Gainor said. \u201cWe can’t call them the press any more. They are \u2018the suppress.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Activists set up “CHOP” in the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood about two weeks ago, barricading off the area after police evacuated a ransacked precinct building there.<\/p>\n

City leaders have faced mounting criticism — including from President Trump — over the protest zone amid reports of violence inside the area and how police can respond to such incidents. Police had not been able to go inside the zone. The dismantling of the CHOP\u00a0followed the death of a 19-year-old man in a\u00a0Saturday shooting<\/a>\u00a0in which another person was injured.<\/p>\n

CNN and MSNBC\u2019s primetime blackout of the latest CHOP news came on the heels of\u00a0a NewsBusters report<\/a> that both CBS\u2019 \u201cEvening News\u201d and \u201cNBC Nightly News\u201d failed to cover the shooting death.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither CBS News nor NBC News gave the shootings any airtime during their flagship newscasts,\u201d NewsBusters analyst Nicholas Fondacaro wrote.<\/p>\n
