Thomas Jefferson University president who liked controversial tweets resigns<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n

Mark Tykocinski will remain a full professor, but has stepped down as president and interim medical school dean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Thomas Jefferson University President Mark Tykocinski, who came under fire less than three months ago for liking controversial tweets<\/a> about COVID-19 vaccines and gender reassignment surgery for children on his official presidential Twitter account, resigned from his leadership position this week after only a year in the job, the school announced.<\/p>\n

In an email to the university community Thursday, Joseph G. Cacchione, Jefferson\u2019s CEO, said that Tykocinski is exiting the leadership role \u201cto focus on his research and clinical translation efforts\u201d but would remain a full professor. He also will no longer serve as interim dean of Jefferson\u2019s Sidney Kimmel Medical College. The email also noted that the university\u2019s searches for a new provost and medical school dean were nearing completion.<\/p>\n

Susan Aldridge, a senior executive higher education consultant<\/a> who is a member of the board of trustees, became interim president<\/a> on Wednesday, the school said in a statement. She recently retired from Drexel University, where she had been senior vice president for online learning and president of Drexel University Online. Steven Herrine, vice dean of undergraduate medical education, will become interim medical school dean, the school said.<\/p>\n

There was no mention of Tykocinski\u2019s Twitter activity in Cacchione\u2019s announcement about the leadership change.<\/p>\n

Several employees and students who had expressed concern about the president\u2019s tweet likes said Friday they were relieved and pleased that the university\u2019s leadership would be changing.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was one of the outcomes that we wanted,\u201d said a medical school student who asked for anonymity, fearing retribution.<\/p>\n

But the student said Jefferson still must work harder to address concerns about diversity on campus.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cThe deans and faculty have been pretty receptive to what we suggested,\u201d the student said. \u201cWe are optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tykocinski, 70, a Yale-educated molecular immunologist<\/a> and academic leader who has been at Jefferson for nearly 15 years, was elevated from provost to president last July.<\/p>\n

In April, some Jefferson employees who asked for anonymity because they feared retribution approached The Inquirer<\/a> with concerns about Tykocinski\u2019s social media activity, given that it was on an account that clearly identified him as Jefferson\u2019s president and dean of the medical college.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo years after their introduction, the mRNAs Covid vaccines have proven to be what we all should have expected,\u201d said a Dec. 11 tweet that Tykocinski liked. <\/a>\u201cAnother in a long line of overhyped, rushed, profit-driven Big Pharma flops with weak long-term efficacy and a lousy side effect profile. …\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to a case that\u2019s become a cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre for attacks on gender reassignment surgery for children, Tykocinski also liked a tweet by Donald Trump Jr. that said: \u201cDoctors lied and coerced a 13-year-old into an irreversible \u2018gender affirming medical procedure.\u2019 Now she is fighting back and suing them. Donate here to support the lawsuit and help stop child mutilation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university president also liked <\/b>a tweet that linked to a letter to the editor in the Wall Street Journal titled, \u201cDiversity Czars Always Need to Find New Oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, he told The Inquirer in an email that he \u201cliked\u201d tweets to bookmark them, \u201cto learn more about the subject matter or the particular viewpoint,\u201d and that he did not endorse the tweets or the person tweeting those thoughts.<\/p>\n

He later apologized to the Jefferson community and deleted about half his likes.<\/p>\n

Cacchione said then that he was \u201cdisappointed\u201d in the president\u2019s \u201ccareless use\u201d of his Twitter account.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt his level, he is held to a higher standard and should have known better,\u201d Cacchione wrote to Jefferson faculty, employees, and students at the time.<\/p>\n

About a half dozen organizations made up of medical students from LGBTQ and underrepresented racial groups at Jefferson subsequently called on the administration <\/b>to take specific steps<\/a> to improve diversity efforts and publicly hold the president accountable for his social media activity, which they saw as emblematic of a larger problem at the school.<\/p>\n

They called Tykocinski\u2019s explanation for his social media activity \u2014 that he was \u201cliking\u201d controversial tweets in order to bookmark them for later learning \u2014 \u201cdifficult to comprehend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tykocinski\u2019s \u201cactions have harmed students\u2019 trust in the institution\u2019s commitment to its mission,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take the concerns of our students seriously,\u201d Bernard Lopez, the medical college\u2019s senior associate dean for diversity and community engagement and associate provost for diversity and inclusion, said in May. \u201cConversations between university leadership and the student groups who have reached out are ongoing as we work to address their concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n

An email by the Medical Executive Committee, which represents the university\u2019s medical staff, called the social media posts \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cResponsible engagement in social media is essential, and must reflect our commitment to Jefferson\u2019s values, particularly when representing TJUH,\u201d said the email, obtained by The Inquirer.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the university said that Tykocinski\u2019s cancer immunotherapy research had reached \u201ca pivotal stage,\u201d in explaining the change in leadership.<\/p>\n

The university called him a \u201crenowned biomedical innovator\u201d who \u201chas pioneered unique immunotherapeutic strategies that invoke engineered proteins and cells.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe appreciate Dr. Tykocinski\u2019s years of transformational service to Jefferson and wish him an abundance of success in his scientific and other endeavors given their importance to humanity,\u201d the school said.<\/p>\n

His Twitter account<\/a> still lists him as president and dean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n
