<\/p>\n Bruce Hoenshell Blaring warning sirens throughout Maui failed to activate as the apocalyptic wildfires swept through the island, officials said Friday.<\/p>\n The Hawaii Emergency Services Administration confirmed that the emergency system it tests every month in preparation for a crisis was not turned on as the flames raced toward residents.<\/p>\n Instead, HI-EMA sent out alerts via mobile devices. radio and television, and the county\u2019s opt-in resident alert system \u2014 which may have never arrived due to widespread power and cellular outages across Maui.<\/p>\n \u201cNeither Maui nor HI-EMA activated warning sirens on Maui during the wildfire incident,\u201d the agency said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cThe sirens are used to alert the public to seek additional information; they do not necessarily indicate an evacuation.\u201d<\/p>\n Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said it wasn\u2019t clear why the sirens weren\u2019t activated, but that the fire destroyed much of the equipment.<\/p>\n Residents instead depended on three other warning channels: mobile device alerts, local radio and TV stations, and Maui County\u2019s notification system for subscribed residents.<\/p>\n \u201cThe sirens are used to alert the public to seek additional information; they do not necessarily indicate an evacuation,\u201d emergency officials said.<\/p>\n Concerns are rising about the adequacy of the warnings, especially as Hurricane Dora\u2019s winds, present over the central Pacific Ocean, caused power disruptions and hindered mobile communication.<\/p>\n The trust in the government has become so broken that the Maui blaze has spawned elaborate conspiracy theories. One popular theory is that an \u2018energy weapon\u2019 used to control the weather had unleashed the blaze.
