\u00a0Matt Petgrave Has Been Described as His League\u2019s \u2018Most Penalized Player,\u2019 but He\u2019s Also Mentored Youth<\/h2>\n

The page says he had 129 PIM or \u201cpenalty infraction minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n Although that site doesn\u2019t list the infractions, it\u2019s possible to find old box scores showing Petgrave\u2019s penalties. For example, he accrued a penalty for \u201ctripping\u201d in 2015-16 for New Brunswick,\u00a0according to a box score for that game<\/a>. He had a\u00a0penalty for \u201cholding\u201d in 2020<\/a>\u00a0while playing for the Utica Comets, in another example. He was called for \u201cspearing\u201d in a 2022 game with the Sheffield Steelers,\u00a0according to the Elite Ice Hockey League<\/a>.<\/p>\n From 2013 to 2017, he was listed as having 328 career penalty minutes,\u00a0according to Vredshockey.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n In 2010, Petgrave was suspended for five games,\u00a0according to the Canadian Hockey League<\/a>, which wrote, \u201cMatt Petgrave will sit out the next five games for an infraction in the third period of last Saturday\u2019s 9-4 win over Sarnia.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2018,\u00a0the ECHL announced\u00a0<\/a>that \u201cBrampton\u2019s Matt Petgrave has been suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #963, Brampton at Kalamazoo, on April 7.\u201d The ECHL is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in New Jersey.<\/p>\n That same year, he was suspended for one game,\u00a0according to the American Hockey League<\/a>, which wrote on its website, \u201cLaval Rocket defenseman Matt Petgrave has been suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of a slew-footing incident in a game at Toronto on Mar. 28. Petgrave was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 21.1 after being assessed a match penalty. He will miss Laval\u2019s game tonight (Mar. 30) at Binghamton.\u201d<\/p>\n According to the U.S. Hockey Rule Book<\/a>, \u201cSlew Footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent\u2019s feet from under him.\u201d<\/p>\n A statement on the ECHL\u2019s website said, \u201cPetgrave is fined and suspended under Rule #28 \u2013 Supplementary Discipline as a result of his actions at 3:46 of the third period. Petgrave will miss Brampton\u2019s game against Adirondack today (April 8) and any further discipline will be announced at a later date.\u201d That article did not provide additional details.<\/p>\n According to his LinkedIn page<\/a>, Petgrave says he helped mentor youth interested in hockey, writing that he was \u201cresponsible for the hockey development of students age 7-adult. The skills I developed from teaching, especially the younger kids are life forming. Through this job I learned the importance of patience, clear communication and persistence.\u201d<\/p>\n He has also worked as a summer associate for Pure Octane, which sells household products, according to his LinkedIn page.<\/p>\n A man named Sebastian Jackson who says he knows Petgrave and whose X profile lists his experience as a girls\u2019 hockey club volunteer\u00a0wrote<\/a>, \u201cMatt Petgrave had to lock all of his socials due to death threats, & people just being absolute scum bag humans. I\u2019ve met Matt, plenty of times. If you think because he has a lot of penalty minutes that he\u2019s a horrible human you\u2019re wrong. Quit being a** hole humans for f*** sake.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that some people were calling Petgrave racial slurs on X, and wrote, \u201cMatt is one of the nicest guys you\u2019d ever meet. It\u2019s a freak accident but some of you just want to drag someone for the sake of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
