US Secretary of State Antony Blinken used emergency authority to\u00a0approve<\/a>\u00a0the sale of\u00a0$147.5 million of 155 mm artillery shells to Israel<\/strong>\u00a0on Saturday,\u00a0bypassing the standard congressional review<\/strong>\u00a0for arms sales for the second time since the start of the war on Gaza.<\/p>\n

A State Department spokesman said on Friday that “given the urgency of Israel\u2019s defensive needs, the secretary notified Congress that he had exercised his delegated authority to\u00a0determine an emergency existed necessitating the immediate approval of the transfer<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Blinken used the same emergency process to\u00a0approve<\/a>\u00a0the sale of\u00a014,000 tank shells<\/strong>, worth more than $106 million, to Israel. The emergency sale of artillery shells comes as Israel\u2019s military intensifies its bombing campaign in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, on Christmas Eve, Israeli forces bombed the Meghazi camp, killing 86 Palestinians in one strike.\u00a0 Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy\u00a0excused<\/a>\u00a0the death toll by telling\u00a0Sky News<\/i>\u00a0the army had used an\u00a0“incorrect munition.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

But he refused to apologize for the loss of life and did not say what type of munition was used, despite being pressed several times by\u00a0Sky News<\/i>\u00a0presenter Niall Paterson.<\/p>\n

Israel has\u00a0regularly used 2,000 lb US-made bombs<\/strong>\u00a0to target residential neighborhoods in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Continued instances of this sort cast doubt on the sincerity of the White House\u2019s rhetoric calling for Israel to refrain from killing Palestinian civilians in such huge numbers.<\/p>\n

Josh Paul, a former State Department arms expert who resigned in protest in October,\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0The Washington Post<\/i>\u00a0that Blinken\u2019s decision to rush these unguided munitions enables Israel to continue the type of operations in Gaza that have “led to so many Palestinian civilian deaths.”<\/p>\n

“This is shameful, craven, and should frankly turn the stomach of any decent human being,” he said. A\u00a0Washington Post<\/i><\/a>\u00a0analysis found that Israel\u2019s war against Gaza has been\u00a0more devastating than any other 21st-century conflict<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
