Struggle to Repudiate the Balfour Agreement<\/h2>\n<p><!--more-->Renee Parsons<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is little recognition that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/blogs\/news\/3464-the-balfour-declaration-and-its-consequences\"><span class=\"s2\">Balfour Declaration<\/span><\/a> was one of the British Empire\u2019s most colossal political and foreign policy blunders that continues to reverberate today into the most catastrophic moral conflict of modern times. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is generally regarded that the <a href=\"https:\/\/images.search.yahoo.com\/search\/images?p=Balfour+Declaration&amp;fr=ac1or7wjuol&amp;type=E210US1285G91754&amp;imgurl=https%253A%252F%252Fimages.search.yahoo.com%252Fsearch%252Fimages%253Fp%253DBalfour%252BDeclaration#id=8&amp;iurl=https%253A%252F%252Fpalestiner.com%252Fsites%252Fdefault%252Ffiles%252Fstyles%252Fslide_over_992px%252Fpublic%252F2019-01%252Fbalfour_portrait_and_declaration.jpg%253Fitok%253Dm_3iHSLt&amp;action=click\"><span class=\"s2\">Balfour Declaration<\/span><\/a> was a simplistic one page letter authored by UK Foreign Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/criticsofempire0000bern\/page\/306\/mode\/2up?q=%2522balfour+was+almost+alone+in+declaring+bluntly%2522\"><span class=\"s2\">Arthur Balfour<\/span><\/a> to Lord Walter Rothschild and that letter opened the way for Zionist encroachment on the historic and biblical homeland of the indigenous Palestinian people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Prior to WW I, the narrow strip of Palestine was populated by 90% Muslims, 8% Sephardic Jews and even fewer Christians with its Palestinian ancestors a majority dating back to at least the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demographic_history_of_Palestine_(region)\"><span class=\"s2\">Twelfth Century<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Contentious and controversial from the beginning, the backstory of Balfour reveals that the much quoted Declaration required a dedicated bureaucratic effort to satisfy the Arab world that the Brits would support an independent nation state in exchange for their opposition to the Ottoman Empire in WW I.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was a complex politicization process perpetrated by <a href=\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=203094\"><span class=\"s2\">influential UK diplomats<\/span><\/a> intent on establishing a Zionist political ideology in Palestine as a necessary participant in the New World Order that was yet to unfold.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the International Zionist Federation organized and solidified itself in the 1800s and early Twentieth century, the strong-willed Russian Bolshevik Jews provided the Talmudic dogma which greatly influenced the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtforeignpolicy.com\/2023\/12\/the-criminal-and-violent-creation-of-israel\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Zionist Palestine<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those Zionists relied on questionable biblical references that were a foreign concept to the more cultured European Jews.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today\u2019s Zionists are blind to the truth there is no divinely inspired protection for nations that behave as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtforeignpolicy.com\/2024\/01\/israel-just-guaranteed-wwiii\/#google_vignette\"><span class=\"s2\">hate-filled<\/span><\/a> terrorist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L1PKlV1JMBU\"><span class=\"s2\">military dictatorship<\/span><\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/590125-israel-kills-us-without-mercy\/\"><span class=\"s2\">murders defenseless<\/span><\/a> citizens and <a href=\"https:\/\/halturnerradioshow.com\/index.php\/en\/news-page\/world\/behold-the-true-nature-of-israelis-ghastly-savage-beasts-laughing-at-shooting-children\"><span class=\"s2\">their children<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Serious discussion about Palestine\u2019s future began in 1914 just as <a href=\"https:\/\/rense.com\/general91\/amd.htm\"><span class=\"s2\">WW I<\/span><\/a> was beginning with consequential talks between Secretary of War General Herbert Kitchener and the Emir of Mecca, Hussein bin Ali of the Hashemite clan; a lineage descended directly from the Prophet Muhammad and world leader of Islam. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In anticipation of the Ottoman collapse, agreement to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Damascus_Protocol\"><span class=\"s2\">Damascus Protocol<\/span><\/a> confirmed Arab support against Ottoman in exchange for recognition of an Arab independent state.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Kitchener further pledged<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the UK would <\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8220;&#8230;<i>guarantee the independence, rights and privileges of the Sharifate against all external foreign aggression, in particular,&#8221;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i> <\/i>and to acknowledge and establish boundaries for an independent Arab nation. Those proposed borders ran from the 37<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s3\"> parallel <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/37th_parallel_north\"><span class=\"s6\">north<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0on the southern border of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkey\"><span class=\"s7\">Turkey<\/span><\/a>, bounded in the east by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persia\"><span class=\"s7\">Persia<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_Gulf\"><span class=\"s7\">Persian Gulf<\/span><\/a>, in the west by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean_Sea\"><span class=\"s7\">Mediterranean Sea<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and in the south by the Arabian Sea. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s8\"><sup><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By June, 1915, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Palestine\/World-War-I-and-after\"><span class=\"s2\">McMahon-Hussein Correspondence<\/span><\/a> between Sir Henry McMahon, High Commissioner of Egypt and Hussein bin Ali began an exchange authorized by Foreign Secretary Edward Grey that continued through March, 1916 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/75\/Correspondence_between_Sir_Henry_McMahon_and_the_Sherif_Hussein_of_Mecca_Cmd_5957.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">series of ten letters<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">That correspondence ostensibly was to clarify details of the independent Arab state agreement which was assumed to include Palestine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/75\/Correspondence_between_Sir_Henry_McMahon_and_the_Sherif_Hussein_of_Mecca_Cmd_5957.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">Letter No. 4<\/span><\/a> on October 24, 1915, McMahon confirmed that \u201c<i>Great Britain is prepared to recognize and support the independence of the Arabs in all regions demanded by the Sheriff of Mecca \u201d <\/i>as well as ..\u201d<i>this declaration will assure you beyond all possible doubt of the sympathy of Great Britain towards the aspirations of \u2018her friends\u2019, the Arabs and will result in a firm and lasting alliance\u2026\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By May 1916, the UK and France entered into a secret agreement that became <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sykes%25E2%2580%2593Picot_Agreement\"><span class=\"s2\">Sykes-Picot Agreement<\/span><\/a> to divvy up Ottoman into \u2018spheres of influence\u2019 after the war. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Brits received parts of southern Iraq, southern Israel, Palestine and Jordan with Palestine to be governed by an \u2018<i>international administration.<\/i>\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On November, 2, 1917, the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/video.search.yahoo.com\/search\/video?fr=ac1or7wjuol&amp;p=Balfour+Declaration&amp;type=E210US1285G91754#id=1&amp;vid=7044c827aff7fe1f5f44f1641099393f&amp;action=click\"><span class=\"s2\">Balfour letter<\/span><\/a> further complicated Palestine\u2019s future by declaring Palestine to be subordinate with the Zionists. That letter suggested the usual blather about a \u2018<i>declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations<\/i>\u201d and that His Majesty\u2019s government would favor<i> \u201cestablishment of a national home for the Jewish people<\/i>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since WW I was not going well for the allies, there was also the <a href=\"https:\/\/rense.com\/general91\/amd.htm\"><span class=\"s2\">promise<\/span><\/a> the Brits made to the Zionists that if they were able to deliver the US into the war, they could have Palestine via Balfour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Balfour contained numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/blogs\/news\/3464-the-balfour-declaration-and-its-consequences\"><span class=\"s2\">contradictions s<\/span><\/a>uch as whether creating a \u2018<i>national home\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>was consistent with international law<i> <\/i>or was it to be a full fledged Jewish nation state.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet both Balfour and Prime Minister Lord George<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(1916 -1922) confirmed that the \u201c<i>intent was always to create a Jewish state<\/i>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Additionally, did the UK have authority over another sovereign nation as well as dictate the future of Palestinians who were not subjects of the British Empire and especially, how could Israel be awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Palestine\/World-War-I-and-after#ref478939\"><span class=\"s2\">right to self determination<\/span><\/a> as a minority population when the Palestinian majority were denied the same self determination rights.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There was one section of Balfour\u2019s final version that has been rarely recognized, apparently altered somewhere along the way, which required the Zionists to preserve \u2018<i>holy places\u2019<\/i> like the al Aqsa Mosque which continues to be an intense object of hostilities especially by Israeli \u2018settlers\u2019 who assert ownership rights to every inch of the West Bank :<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>..\u201dit being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which will prejudice the civil and religious rights of Christian and all other non-Jewish communities in Palestine, and <\/i><b><i>that the holy places and religious buildings and sites in Palestine shall be adequately protected.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That one requirement to \u2018<i>adequately protect\u2019<\/i> holy sites has never been acknowledged by Israel, much less protected. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By December, 2017,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>British\/Allied forces captured Jerusalem while the fate of Palestine remained problematic. By 1919, the League of Nations which was structured to create one world government, incorporated Balfour and established a geopolitical Mandate for Palestine (1920-1948).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That mandate claimed<\/span><span class=\"s9\"> a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Legal_status\"><span class=\"s7\">legal status<\/span><\/a>\u00a0under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_law\"><span class=\"s7\">international law<\/span><\/a> involving the transfer of control from one nation to another during a time of war.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">In February, 1919, the first Palestinian Arab conference of the Muslim Christian Association was founded by Arab leaders to oppose Zionist activity, the Balfour Declaration and the proposed Mandate. <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">One year later, delegates to the General Syrian Congress met in Damascus to again reject Balfour and elected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Faisal-I\"><span class=\"s2\">Fay\u1e63al I<\/span><\/a>\u2014son of \u1e24usayn ibn Al\u012b, who ruled the Hejaz\u2014 to be king of a united Syria (including Palestine). <\/span><span class=\"s3\">By July, 1920, the French forced Fay\u1e63al to give up his newly founded kingdom of Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The San Remo Conference of 1920 met to finalize new geopolitical borders and confirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mandate_for_Palestine\"><span class=\"s2\">Palestine Mandate<\/span><\/a> that was meant to provide &#8220;<i>administrative advice and assistance by a Mandate until such time as they are able to stand alone<\/i>&#8221; in 1948.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s9\">As a result of the above, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Sharif and the Arab leadership considered Sykes-Picot and Balfour as not binding given their understanding that terms of Correspondence with McMahon had been violated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When Hussein realized that Great Britain would refuse to recognize Arab independence in Palestine, he accused Britin of s breach of faith.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He refused to ratify the 1919 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Versailles\"><span class=\"s6\">Treaty of Versailles<\/span><\/a> <\/span><span class=\"s9\">and, in response to a 1921\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\"><span class=\"s7\">British<\/span><\/a>\u00a0proposal to sign a treaty accepting the Mandate system, refused stating he could not be expected to &#8220;<i>affix his name to a document assigning Palestine to the Zionists and Syria to foreigners<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s10\">&#8220;.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In December, 1920, the Palestinians established an Executive Committee at the Congress in Haifa which recognized Palestine as a self-governing body, totally rejecting Zionist rights to Palestine which remained their position until 1948.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Congress and its Executive Committee were never formally recognized by the British and dissolved in 1934.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\">In November, 1921, a Palestinian delegation traveled to London to plead repudiation of Balfour and establishment of a democratically elected national parliament.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a typically lame response, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Great Britain did \u201c<i>not contemplate that Palestine as a whole should be converted into a Jewish National Home, but that such a Home should be founded in Palestine\u201d<\/i> did nothing to resolve the armed conflict that continued for the next one hundred years.<i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In July 1922, the emerging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/League-of-Nations\"><span class=\"s2\">League of Nations<\/span><\/a> approved the Mandate for Palestine, including the Balfour Declaration, stressing the Jewish historical connection with Palestine but no acknowledgement of the Palestinians ancestral ties to the Holy Land.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On September 29, 1923, the League\u2019s Mandate officially came into force.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although in 1937, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peel_Commission\"><span class=\"s2\">Peel Commission<\/span><\/a> saw the mandate as unworkable and recommended a Partition into three zones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arab_Higher_Committee\"><span class=\"s2\">Arab Higher Committee <\/span><\/a>unanimously opposed the Partition Plan and establishment of a Jewish state but no one was listening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In November, 1947, after intense Zionist lobbying, the United Nations approved a modified Partition (33-13-10) awarding the Arab state with 42% of land and Israel receiving 56%. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The partition never occurred as war began almost immediately with David ben Gurion boldly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israeli_Declaration_of_Independence#\/media\/File:Declaration_of_State_of_Israel_1948.jpg\"><span class=\"s2\">asserting<\/span><\/a> a name change from Palestine with a Declaration of Independence creating<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>State of Israel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was no orderly transition of power or any recognized authority of an established government which ultimately provided Israel with 75% of land including prime shore line real estate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By 1948, the conflict accelerated with \u201c<i>750,000 Palestinians being displaced from their ancestral homes, 531 villages had been destroyed and eleven urban neighborhoods were eliminated as the Zionists began their ethnic cleansing campaign.
