US President Joe Biden has again urged Republican lawmakers to approve a long-stalled budget deal, vowing to shut down his country\u2019s southern border as soon as he\u2019s given the authority to do so.<\/p>\n

Republicans have been blocking the White House’s attempts to push through a $106 billion \u2018national security package\u2019 for Ukraine and Israel since October. They have demanded tougher security measures on the southern frontier be included in the agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201dFor too long, we all know the border\u2019s been broken. It\u2019s long past time to fix it,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Biden outlined in a written statement on Friday.<\/p>\n

He described the border deal, now being negotiated in the Senate, as\u00a0\u201cthe toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we\u2019ve ever had in our country.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Biden vowed.<\/p>\n

Under the bipartisan agreement, the administration would, among other things, be required to shut the border down if the number of migrants trying to get into the US illegally on any given day reaches 5,000, the New York Times reported. This threshold had been surpassed\u00a0\u201croutinely\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in recent months, the paper stressed.<\/p>\n

Finding common ground on the immigration deal would be\u00a0\u201ca win for America,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the president insisted.\u00a0\u201cIf you\u2019re serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill, and I will sign it,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Biden said, addressing the Republican lawmakers.<\/p>\n

The Washington Post described the comments as\u00a0\u201ca remarkable shift\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in the Democratic president\u2019s rhetoric on the immigration issue. The media outlet underscored\u00a0\u201cthe urgency\u201d<\/em>\u00a0of the situation on the border for his re-election bid.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s statement came as Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Friday that if the leaks about the deal\u2019s content were accurate, it would be\u00a0\u201cdead on arrival\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in the lower chamber.<\/p>\n

The likely Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, slammed the border deal earlier this week, warning that it\u00a0\u201cwould be another gift to the radical left Democrats.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The agreement\u00a0\u201cwill be meaningless in terms of border security,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump argued, reiterating that the only way to solve the immigration issue would be voting for him in November.<\/p>\n
