The backlash toward the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases compares to what he saw while\u00a0advancing HIV\/AIDS research in the 1980s and 90s<\/a>, he said on CNN\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThe Axe Files\u201d podcast.<\/a><\/p>\n Fauci, an infectious disease expert who has appeared alongside Donald Trump as a member of the White House coronavirus task force, has been a frequent target during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n \u201cThe kind of, not only hate mail, but also serious actual threats, are not good,\u201d he told the podcast\u2019s host, David Axelrod, who was the chief strategist for former President Obama\u2019s presidential campaigns. \u201cI don\u2019t see how society does that.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s tough. Serious threats against me, against my family, my daughters, my wife \u2014 I mean, really?\u201d he continued. \u201cIs this the United States of America? But it\u2019s real.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump told Fox News\u2019 Chris Wallace last week that, despite a growing number of coronavirus cases in the United States, Fauci is \u201ca little bit of an alarmist<\/a>,\u201d according to The Hill. Trump added that Fauci has \u201cmade some mistakes\u201d in his approach to the pandemic.<\/p>\n
