A group of doctors dressed in white coats have quickly gone viral after one of them claimed to have cured COVID-19. Dr Stella Immanuel, a Houston GP in the United States, stood with several others on the steps of Capitol Hill in Washington to say she had successfully treated more than 350 people with <\/span>coronavirus <\/span>using hydroxychloroquine. The \u201cDeliverance Minister\u201d said she went to medical school in Nigeria where she treated malaria patients with the drug, which President Donald Trump claimed could <\/span>prevent or treat COVID-19<\/span>. Dr Immanuel claimed the drug worked, in the video which got more than 20 million views on Facebook and continues to spread after being removed. \u201cI\u2019m here because I have personally treated over 350 patients with COVID,\u201d she said. \u201cPatients that have diabetes, patients that have high blood pressure, patients that have asthma, old people … I think my oldest patient is 92 … 87 year olds. And the result has been the same. I put them on hydroxychloroquine, I put them on zinc, I put them on Zithromax, and they\u2019re all well.\u201d She said she put herself, her staff and other doctors she knew on hydroxychloroquine for prevention of COVID-19. \u201cWe see patients, 10 to 15 COVID patients, everyday,\u201d she said. \u201cWe give them breathing treatments. We only wear surgical mask. None of us has gotten sick. It works.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Immanuel said no one needed to die, as America\u2019s death toll for the virus reaches 148,000. But her views – connected to a group called America\u2019s Frontline Doctors – quickly came under fire. The group only recently created its website which says it wants to \u201cempower Americans to stop living in fear\u201d. \u201cIf Americans continue to let so-called experts and media personalities make their decisions, the great American experiment of a Constitutional Republic with Representative Democracy, will cease,\u201d it says. Emergency medicine doctor Anand Swaminathan said the hydroxychloroquine propaganda from America\u2019s Frontline Doctors was complete nonsense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the message of hucksters, not doctors,\u201d he wrote on Twitter. \u201cMultiple well-done studies show no benefit for HCQ. If your results are so good, publish. There is a cure for COVID.\u201d Many others slammed the group on Twitter, questioning their credentials and the fact they were wearing matching lab coats. \u201cThe coat the doctors are wearing says \u2018America\u2019s Frontline Doctors\u2019 – what organisation is that?\u201d one woman asked. \u201cWhat hospital are they affiliated with? Where do they work? And they are all standing there without masks on. Real doctors would not set this poor of an example.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cleadership\u201d team of the America\u2019s Frontline Doctors group includes ophthalmologists, an orthopaedic surgeon and a psychiatrist. Its leader, Dr Simone Gold, has appeared on conservative talk radio and podcast programs to advocate for the use of hydroxychloroquine. In May she said there was \u201cno scientific basis that the average American should be concerned\u201d about COVID-19. The LA emergency doctor was head organiser of an open letter signed by more than 600 doctors who pushed Mr Trump to end what they called a \u201cnational shutdown\u201d. On her blog she said masks did not work. \u201cThe scientific usefulness of a mask has been so aggressively overstated,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Covid virus was supposed to be contained in the kind of lab where people wear astronaut suits and go through triple sealed doors. It is a con of massive proportion to assert that now, having escaped those environs, a bandana will magically do the trick.\u201d A Facebook spokesman said the group\u2019s video was removed for \u201csharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19\u201d.
