{"id":223699,"date":"2024-04-17T07:30:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-17T11:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=223699"},"modified":"2024-04-17T07:30:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T11:30:15","slug":"supercharged-spying-provision-buried-in-terrifying-fisa-702-reauthorization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=223699","title":{"rendered":"<h1>Supercharged Spying Provision Buried In &#8220;Terrifying&#8221; FISA 702 Reauthorization<\/h1>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/political\/supercharged-spying-provision-buried-terrifying-fisa-702-reauthorization\">READ HERE<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ll explain how this new power works.<\/strong>\u00a0Under current law, the government can compel \u201celectronic communications service providers\u201d that have direct access to communications to assist the NSA in conducting Section 702 surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, that means\u00a0<strong>companies like Verizon and Google must turn over the communications of the targets of Section 702 surveillance.\u00a0<\/strong>(The targets must be foreigners overseas, although the communications can\u2014and do\u2014include communications with Americans.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Through a seemingly innocuous change to the definition of \u201celectronic communications surveillance provider,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0an amendment offered by House intel committee (HPSCI) leaders and passed by the House\u00a0<strong>vastly expands the universe of entities that can be compelled to assist the NSA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the bill becomes law,\u00a0<strong>any company or individual that provides ANY service whatsoever may be forced to assist in NSA surveillance, as long as they have access to equipment on which communications are transmitted or stored\u2014such as routers, servers, cell towers, etc<\/strong>. That sweeps in an enormous range of U.S. businesses that provide wifi to their customers and therefore have access to equipment on which communications transit.
