Azerbaijan<\/a> being oil-rich is viewed to have significantly strengthened the stability of President Ilham Aliyev’s regime and enriched ruling elites in Azerbaijan, making it possible for the country to host lavish international events, as well as engage in extensive lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n

Aliyev’s family have enriched themselves through their ties to state-run businesses. They own significant parts of several major Azerbaijani banks, construction firms and telecommunications firms, and partially owns the country’s oil and gas industries. Much of the wealth is hidden through an elaborate network of offshore companies. He was named Corruption’s ‘Person of the Year’ by\u00a0Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project<\/a>\u00a0in 2012.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2017, it was revealed that Aliyev and his family were involved in the\u00a0Azerbaijani laundromat<\/a>, a complex\u00a0money-laundering<\/a>\u00a0scheme to pay off prominent European politicians to deflect criticism of Aliyev and promote a positive image of his regime.<\/p>\n

Many observers see Aliyev as a\u00a0dictator<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He leads an authoritarian regime in Azerbaijan; elections are not free and fair, political power is concentrated in the hands of Aliyev and his extended family, corruption is rampant, and\u00a0human rights<\/a>\u00a0violations are severe (including\u00a0torture<\/a>,\u00a0arbitrary arrests<\/a>, as well as harassment of journalists and\u00a0non-governmental organizations<\/a>). The\u00a0Nagorno-Karabakh conflict<\/a>\u00a0continued during Aliyev’s presidency and culminated into a\u00a0full-scale war<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 in which Azerbaijan regained control over the\u00a0Armenian-occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh<\/a>\u00a0that were lost during the\u00a0First Nagorno-Karabakh War<\/a>, as well as a part of\u00a0Nagorno-Karabakh<\/a> region itself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was kidnapped by Israel, the government of Iran would never admit to such an egregious lapse in security and neither would Israel.<\/p>\n

Such a brazen move by the Netanyahu regime would make perfect sense as a means of preventing any future bombings of Israeli territories.\u00a0 Because only by holding such a high-level hostage could Tehran’s compliance be guaranteed going forward.<\/p>\n

There really is no other explanation for 60 search and rescue teams<\/strong> scouring the crash site area to find the Iranian president, especially when they had the exact GPS-guided location all the time… just as Israel had the exact location of the president’s helicopter throughout the extremely ill-advised trip toward the Azerbaijan border.<\/p>\n
