{"id":232955,"date":"2024-06-04T13:04:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T17:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=232955"},"modified":"2024-06-04T13:28:26","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T17:28:26","slug":"republicans-vow-to-scorch-the-earth-after-trump-conviction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=232955","title":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Republicans Vow To Scorch The Earth After Trump Conviction<\/b><\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->By Philip Wegmann<br \/>\nRealClearPolitics<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/529164_jpg_92a.jpg?itok=obdDWqKQ\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/529164_jpg_92a.jpg?itok=obdDWqKQ\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/529164_jpg_92a.jpg?itok=obdDWqKQ\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"302\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f965205c-1dab-4de6-90bf-bc8e8c0b4608\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spurred by the volcanic temper of their base,\u00a0<strong>Republicans are now preparing to scorch the earth in the wake of former President Donald Trump\u2019s conviction, potentially setting off a chain reaction that could fundamentally alter the American political system entirely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No one knows exactly how far they will go in their response.<\/p>\n<p>What is clear is that conservatives have no patience for President Biden\u2019s argument Friday morning that justice was served in Manhattan, that \u201cthe American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed.\u201d They see the conviction instead as unprecedented \u201clawfare\u201d meant to interfere with the coming election and, some say, an unprecedented response is now in order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The good guys must be as tough as the villains or freedom is doomed,<\/strong>\u201d senior Trump advisor Stephen Miller told RealClearPolitics without offering exact details. Rep. Mike Collins, meanwhile, was explicit. \u201cTime for Red State AGs and DAs to get busy,\u201d the Georgia Republican\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMikeCollins\/status\/1796331885498392866\">said Thursday,<\/a>\u00a0floating the idea that Republicans should begin using the courts to pursue their political enemies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign-funded Steele dossier is a good start<\/strong>,\u201d Collins continued, referencing how the former Secretary of State\u2019s presidential campaign misreported their spending on the infamous opposition research document. Clinton was later fined $11,000 by the Federal Election Commission.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-2022-midterm-elections-business-elections-presidential-elections-5468774d18e8c46f81b55e9260b13e93\">No criminal charges were brought.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The statute of limitations expired but I\u2019m told that\u2019s not a thing anymore,<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMikeCollins\/status\/1796331885498392866\">Collins said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Republicans on Capitol Hill are preparing a more traditional counter-offensive, one within established parliamentary rules. Led by Utah Sen. Mike Lee, eight Republicans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ScottTParkinson\/status\/1796601817612288153\">have vowed to oppose all major legislation<\/a>\u00a0\u201cnot directly relevant to the safety of the American people\u201d and blockade all judicial nominees in protest of Trump\u2019s conviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We can\u2019t pretend that our political world didn\u2019t change yesterday pretty dramatically and for the worse<\/strong>,\u201d Lee told RCP. The Utah Republican admitted that legislation normally slows ahead of an election but White House efforts to get anything through the Senate \u201cjust get a lot harder for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A legislative blockade alone may not satisfy a conservative base hell-bent on retribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to hear elected Republicans complaining. I don\u2019t need to see their tweets and statements condemning the verdict. The only thing I want to hear from these people is which Democrats they will have arrested. Don\u2019t tell us that you\u2019re sad about the verdict. We don\u2019t give a shit about your feelings. We want to see corrupt Democrats frog marched on camera in handcuffs. If you won\u2019t do that, then shut up,\u201d Matt Walsh, a Daily Wire columnist with a following in the millions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MattWalshBlog\/status\/1796520367365718281\">wrote on the social media website X.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Replied conservative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1796559048512610575\">influencer Chaya Raichik:<\/a>\u00a0\u201c<strong>Exactly. Where\u2019s the list! Here\u2019s a start: Obama Hillary Joe Biden Hunter Biden.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mike Davis, a longtime Republican strategist floated as a potential Trump attorney general,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/05\/31\/trump-trial-guilty-verdict-republican-revenge\">told Axios<\/a>\u00a0he wants prosecutors in red states like Georgia and Florida to open criminal probes into Democrats for allegedly conspiring to interfere in the election by indicting the former president.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Lee stopped short of endorsing those efforts. He likened it to some campaigns on the left to pack the Supreme Court, an initiative he has long opposed, warning that it would lead to \u201clawlessness\u201d and \u201cpoliticization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is an analogous circumstance,\u201d the senator said of the prosecution of a major presidential candidate, something that the Department of Justice has long avoided. \u201cThey\u2019ve broken a seal,\u201d Lee said of the Trump conviction. \u201cI don\u2019t know that it can be contained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held out one remote possibility:<strong>\u00a0If Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team experience a change of heart during the appeals process. \u201cThey could confess error on appeal,\u201d Lee said. \u201cOther instances of lawfare, wherever they exist, could be dropped. You could put this genie back in the bottle still, but not for very much longer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump could potentially temper the rage of the right before Republicans start dragging their Democratic political opponents to court. He has already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/americas\/trump-vows-to-go-after-entire-biden-crime-family-if-reelected-in-2024\/2921767\">vowed to appoint a special prosecutor<\/a>\u00a0\u201cto go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump famously promised to \u201clock up\u201d Clinton during the 2016 election, but he quickly abandoned that pledge after winning the election. \u201cI don\u2019t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don\u2019t,\u201d Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/22\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-investigation.html\">told the New York Times.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cShe went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways, and I am not looking to hurt them at all. The campaign was vicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he was comfortable with the idea of drawing up lists of political enemies to prosecute, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott leaned on scripture, telling CNN that \u201cvengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord. We\u2019ll leave that there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The bottom line is simply this, without question, President Trump has looked me in my eyes and a room full of other folks and said, you know what, the best revenge is success,<\/strong>\u201d continued Scott, a potential Trump VP pick.<\/p>\n<p>Talk of their own lawfare, for now, is just talk. The most immediate, and concrete, consequence of the conviction has been dollars. Republicans have been raking in political donations hand-over-fist, with the Trump campaign announcing a 24-hour fundraising haul of $34.8 million \u2013 29% of which came from first-time Trump donors.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he was worried about being prosecuted after leaving the White House now that some on the right have declared open season in response to the Trump conviction, Biden told Fox News, \u201cNot at all. I didn\u2019t do anything wrong.
