Thomas Matthew Crooks<\/b>\u00a0(September 20, 2003[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0\u2013 July 13, 2024)[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0was an American man who\u00a0attempted to assassinate<\/a>\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>, the 45th\u00a0president of the United States<\/a>\u00a0and presumptive\u00a0Republican Party<\/a>\u00a0nominee for the\u00a02024 presidential election<\/a>. On July 13, 2024, during a Trump speech at a campaign rally near\u00a0Butler, Pennsylvania<\/a>, Crooks used an\u00a0AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle<\/a>\u00a0to fire eight rounds from a rooftop 200 to 400 feet (61 to 122 m) north of the stage. He wounded Trump on the right ear, killed an audience member, and critically injured two others. He was killed by a\u00a0Secret Service Counter Assault Team<\/a>\u00a0sniper<\/a>\u00a0immediately after the shooting.[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Thomas Matthew Crooks was from\u00a0Bethel Park, Pennsylvania<\/a>. Crooks attended\u00a0Bethel Park High School<\/a>\u00a0and graduated in 2022.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He received a $500 “star award” the same year from the\u00a0National Math and Science Initiative<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

It is believed that on January 20, 2021, at the age of 17, he donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project, a liberal\u00a0voter turnout<\/a>\u00a0group, through the\u00a0Democratic Party<\/a>\u00a0donation platform\u00a0ActBlue<\/a>, an organization dedicated to improving turnout among\u00a0Democratic Party<\/a>\u00a0voters.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

On July 14, the\u00a0Federal Bureau of Investigation<\/a>\u00a0identified him as the shooter behind the\u00a0attempted assassination of Donald Trump<\/a>.
