A glitch with Microsoft Windows is said to have caused computer systems to crash around the world, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India, Japan, and the UK, and shut down air travel systems, street lights, credit card payment systems, banks, broadcasts, 911 calls, supermarket registers and more. Experts attributed the failures to a recent update of CrowdStrike anti-virus cyber security software that caused computers to crash.<\/p>\n
CrowdStrike was founded in 2011 by two former McAfee executives, the company sells cybersecurity software to Fortune 500 companies and federal and state agencies. Its first product, Falcon, an update of which was cited for Friday\u2019s outage, detects security breaches in Windows or Mac computers.<\/p>\n
Max Blumenthal called CrowdStrike \u201cthe shady firm hired by the DNC\u00a0to find Russia responsible for hacking its server.\u201d In 2016, CrowdStrike was hired by the Democratic National Committee to investigate the hacking of DNC computers a year earlier.<\/p>\n

The World Economic Forum (WEF) predicted in 2023 that geopolitical instability would lead to a catastrophic cyber event within 2 years and they provided a \u201csolution\u201d and called for a global response and cooperation. Windows outages are being reported across the globe, apparently caused by a\u00a0CrowdStrike<\/a>\u00a0issue.<\/p>\n And if your banking app is down or doctor\u2019s appointment was canceled, well, you\u2019re not alone there either.<\/p>\n The problem first arose overnight for the East Coast of the U.S.<\/p>\n \u201cCrowdStrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows hosts related to the Falcon Sensor,\u201d\u00a0the cybersecurity company wrote in an alert confirming the outage<\/a>\u00a0at 1:30 a.m. ET on Friday.\u00a0CrowdStrike\u2019s Falcon Sensor<\/a>\u00a0is software designed to prevent computer systems from cyber attacks.<\/p>\n \u201cSymptoms include experiencing a bugcheck\\blue screen error related to the Falcon Sensor,\u201d CrowdStrike\u2019s alert continued. \u201cOur Engineering teams are actively working to resolve this issue and there is no need to open a support ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n Though the CrowdStrike issue is specifically causing Windows to crash, the problem seems to be having further reaching implications. Considering that Windows is an incredibly popular operating system and CrowdStrike an incredibly popular cybersecurity company, companies and services worldwide have had massive issues all of Friday.<\/p>\n Microsoft acknowledged the issue as well. \u201cWe\u2019re aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming,\u201d a Microsoft spokesperson says.<\/p>\n Around midday on Friday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella issued a statement on the outages as the world continued to reel with the ramifications.<\/p>\n \u201cYesterday, CrowdStrike released an update that began impacting IT systems globally,\u201d Nadella\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0on X. \u201cWe are aware of this issue and are working closely with CrowdStrike and across the industry to provide customers technical guidance and support to safely bring their systems back online.\u201d<\/p>\n Reports of outages have rolled in from several countries around the world, including the United States,\u00a0Australia, New Zealand<\/a>, India, Japan, and\u00a0the UK<\/a>. As of writing, crowdsourced outage monitor\u00a0DownDetector<\/a>\u00a0is indicating a spike in issues across a slew of platforms and businesses in the U.S. as well, including Instagram, eBay, Visa, ADT, and PlentyOfFish.<\/p>\n Mashable\u2019s Alex Perry broke down, in detail,\u00a0six of the biggest industries and services experiencing problems<\/a>, but here are the broad strokes.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a very, very uncomfortable illustration of the fragility of the world\u2019s core internet infrastructure,\u201d Ciaran Martin, the former chief executive of Britain\u2019s National Cyber Security Center, told the\u00a0New York Times<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n Several U.S. airlines, such as American, Delta, and United Airlines, have been\u00a0grounded due to communications issues<\/a>, seemingly also the result of the outage. Thousands of flights have been canceled across the globe.<\/p>\n UK\u2019s\u00a0Ryanair announced<\/a>\u00a0that their booking and check-in system is currently down.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Federal Aviation Administration<\/a>\u00a0said on X it was \u201cclosely monitoring a technical issue impacting IT systems at U.S. airlines, with updates available at\u00a0fly.faa.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n A number of hospitals and emergency services were affected by the outage. Boston hospital Mass General Brigham, for instance,\u00a0said early Friday that<\/a>\u00a0\u201call previously scheduled non-urgent surgeries, procedures, and medical visits are canceled today.\u201d Alaskan State Troopers\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook that \u201cmany 911 and non-emergency call centers are not working correctly across the State of Alaska.\u201d Worries were so widespread that other locales, such as New York City and Miami-Dade, put\u00a0out<\/a>\u00a0statements<\/a>\u00a0that their emergency services were\u00a0not\u00a0<\/i>affected.<\/p>\n As the day wore on, it became clear that countless hospitals across the country were forced to cancel non-emergency appointments while, thankfully, 911 and emergency services seemed to be operation in most places. A total of three states \u2014 Alaska, Oregon, and Arizona \u2014 had areas that had issues with 911 or emergency response systems, the\u00a0New York Times<\/a><\/i>\u00a0reported.<\/a><\/p>\n Supermarkets, banks, airlines, telecommunications companies, and TV broadcasters<\/a>\u00a0are among the businesses impacted, with\u00a0shoppers in Australia reportedly unable to pay for groceries<\/a>\u00a0due to electronic payment systems being down. A look at\u00a0DownDetector shows<\/a>\u00a0a spike in outages across nearly all industries. Visa, Starbucks, Chase, TD Bank, Bank of America, Walmart, UPS, and countless other businesses appeared to be having issues. Even shipping services, like UPS and FedEX,\u00a0said that deliveries<\/a>\u00a0would be delayed due to the outages. The problem is so widespread it is difficult to understand its scope, but it appears to be one of, if not\u00a0the<\/i>\u00a0largest, outages in history.<\/p>\n Authorities in Arizona\u2019s Maricopa County, where Phoenix is located, reported issues in some early voting locations for the state\u2019s primary elections.<\/p>\n \u201cDue to the global tech outage, Maricopa County Elections is also experiencing an outage at some voting locations,\u201d wrote the Maricopa County Elections Department in a statement.<\/p>\n Fortunately, CrowdStrike has since announced at 2:30 a.m. ET that it has\u00a0identified the update causing the issue<\/a>\u00a0and rolled it back.
