{"id":244391,"date":"2024-08-08T07:00:51","date_gmt":"2024-08-08T11:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=244391"},"modified":"2024-08-08T07:02:03","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T11:02:03","slug":"gops-political-wars-in-colorado-heating-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=244391","title":{"rendered":"<h2>GOP\u2019s Political Wars in Colorado Heating Up<\/h2>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Renee Parsons<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The partisan conflict within the Republican Party in Colorado most likely began with an attempt by the Establishment RINOs<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-14\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Fourteenth Amendment<\/span><\/a> to keep Donald Trump off the state\u2019s presidential ballot in 2024.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That effort failed with a unanimous <a href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/category\/election-2024\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Supreme Court decision<\/span><\/a> that the Fourteenth did not apply to a Presidential election which did not endear its advocates to the America First movement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>From there, the dye was cast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is regrettable that some Republicans fail to understand the distinction between establishment Republican rhetoric denouncing America First as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2024\/06\/26\/colorado-primary-boebert-opinion-littwin\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>extremists<\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/a> amid the treachery of their own long standing donor globalist connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many Uniparty sponsors don\u2019t care about losing 2024 to the Dems, some are never Trumpers, others are former elected Republican office holders all united to never relinquish the GOP political reins. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The current Colorado GOP kerfuffle can be traced to the election of former State Rep Dave Williams (2017-2023), Latino on his mother\u2019s side, to <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2023\/03\/11\/new-colorado-republican-chair-elected\/\"><span class=\"s2\">State Chair<\/span><\/a> of the Colorado Republican party.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Elected in January, 2023, by the State Central Committee\u2019s approximately 400 members to a two year term, Williams defeated six other candidates. His election as an America First candidate was quickly followed by establishment Republicans, by the drove, threatening to leave the party.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the effort to remove Williams as Chair of the GOP\u2019s State Central Committee continues, the dispute is little more than an old fashioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopolitics.com\/elections\/2024\/colorado-republicans-remove-chairman-williams\/article_d803a44b-b042-5875-82ce-78953f67928b.html?3nWZDYteJZ=JxjGP1S3D5MMHdJTEP4EVzjWSLmx85ypyJVc9rHHVk9VryCqDtuaGRZccu15vndtmkF90nXZCgHPv4nNjPmugDWYSxRe81R64YeQxMpPn4wH5k1DvcWZYfghkURXtmhAnzkFuLf4W5yiWqt6rdVA2Y\"><span class=\"s2\">internecine political struggle<\/span><\/a> between the America First Trump movement versus the uniparty RINO establishment fighting to retain control of the party apparatus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Williams quickly became targeted by a mental block narrative of being \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2023\/03\/16\/dave-williams-colorado-gop-concern\/\"><span class=\"s2\">divisive<\/span><\/a>\u2019 as he opposed unaffiliated voters from participating in Republican primaries, unqualified support for Donald Trump, opposed to mailed voter ballots and dared to question the 2020 election results. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Upon his election, Williams said that \u201c<i>Everyone\u2019s welcome in our party<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>We\u2019re not going to shift our party to the left thinking that somehow we\u2019re going to win over folks who don\u2019t prefer to vote for us anyway. Democrats don\u2019t compromise who they are.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Known as \u2018far right\u2019 in March, 2023 Williams announced as a Congressional candidate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopolitics.com\/colorado-in-dc\/dave-williams-jeff-crank-colorado-cd5-primary-election-results\/article_33f6b832-4717-5b52-9da8-a5d4a41766f9.html\"><span class=\"s2\">5<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> District<\/span><\/a> currently held by Rep. Doug Lamborn.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Running as a Trump endorsed candidate, Williams lost the CD primary to Jeff Crank who was endorsed and funded by Speaker Johnson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/10\/30\/mike-johnson-embraces-powerful-mccarthy-aligned-super-pac-00124186\"><span class=\"s2\">Congressional Leadership Fund<\/span><\/a>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As establishment Republicans legally challenged Williams and the election of Hope Scheppelman as Vice Chair, a District Court Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradopolitics.com\/elections\/2024\/colorado-republicans-remove-chairman-williams\/article_d803a44b-b042-5875-82ce-78953f67928b.html?3nWZDYteJZ=JxjGP1S3D5MMHdJTEP4EVzjWSLmx85ypyJVc9rHHVk9VryCqDtuaGRZccu15vndtmkF90nXZCgHPv4nNjPmugDWYSxRe81R64YeQxMpPn4wH5k1DvcWZYfghkURXtmhAnzkFuLf4W5yiWqt6rdVA2Y\"><span class=\"s2\">lifted a temporary restraining order<\/span><\/a> on August 7<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> enabling Williams\u2019 opponents to remove he and Scheppelman from their positions with the State\u2019s GOP.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Colorado Republican group will gather on August 24<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> if they have sufficient quorum to vote on whether to retain Williams.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Williams responded with a message that the <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/b6ca5673241e\/officialcallspecialmeetingjulyaugust2024-165952\"><span class=\"s2\">GOP Executive Committee<\/span><\/a> will meet on August 31<\/span><span class=\"s4\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> when the State Central Committee will reiterate its position that its elections are still legal and relevant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">*** <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2004, Colorado <a href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/12790542\/\"><span class=\"s2\">GOP were 35%<\/span><\/a> of all registered voters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since then, under control of its uniparty wing, Republicans lost its edge to currently 24% of registered voters with 47% registered as Independents.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Currently, there are no Republicans elected to statewide office. Nevertheless, establishment Republicans are harshly critical of the America First movement and openly criticize Williams et al for being \u2018<i>right wing conservatives\u2019<\/i> amid accusations of conspiracy mongers, petty bigotry and the \u2018<i>lunatic fringe is ascendant<\/i>\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Former Colorado GOP Chair Dick Wadhams (2007 \u2013 2011) worries that under Williams and America First, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2023\/03\/16\/dave-williams-colorado-gop-concern\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>party will have no credibility<\/i><\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hidden away in the southwest corner of Colorado, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laplatacountygop.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">La Plata County Republicans<\/span><\/a> are no strangers to controversy or disruptive party meetings as they continue to lose elections by a substantial proportion. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With an unruly County GOP Executive Committee unable to find stability, their latest endeavor was to forcibly remove its second Executive Committee member within eight months.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Prior to the upcoming county meeting, the GOP Executive Committee met, during which each member vented their objections to Scheppelman\u2019s continued role as County Secretary. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Scheppelman also serves as Colorado\u2019s State GOP Vice Chair, second only to Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At conclusion of the meeting, County Chair Dave Peters (200 lb.+), made assaultive behavior toward Scheppelman, lunging across the table, slamming his fist and pointing at her face, screaming \u201c<i>I am telling you, get the hell out of here, you\u2019re gone.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>This scene was confirmed by another witness I spoke with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At its most recent monthly meeting, the La Plata rank n file gathered on August 6th<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to rubber stamp its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/la-plata-county-republicans-will-try-to-oust-one-of-their-own-over-her-role-in-state-gop-disunity\/\"><span class=\"s2\">ouster attempt<\/span><\/a> via a <a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/2668ae744c2c0f248cd2fd6fe\/files\/ea0a34b4-ab8b-4cd5-8c74-a544407db5b4\/BYLAW_revision_La_Plata_County_2024.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">Bylaws revision<\/span><\/a> that would authorize removal of Scheppelman as a \u2018<i>far right\u2019<\/i> conservative.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, as the agenda item approached, Peters announced that the Bylaws would not be addressed and, without regard for any Open Meetings Act violation, introduced a new Resolution and Motion to be considered. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That Resolution asserted that the proposed Bylaw revisions were not being considered, if anyone can follow this convoluted reasoning, since \u2018<i>the Secretary so widely distributed without permission.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Scheppelman had, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/embattled-la-plata-county-gop-member-cries-foul-at-attempts-to-oust-her-from-leadership\/\"><span class=\"s2\">circulated the proposed<\/span><\/a> Bylaws to precinct captains and others who were expected to attend and vote on the Bylaws at the upcoming scheduled meeting. Her emailing of those revisions is not a violation of any party rules.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Accusations contained in the Resolution against Scheppelman included \u201c<i>interfered with the Bylaws Committee authority<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>usurped power of the Chair by executing and publishing a decision<\/i>,\u201d \u201c<i>disrespected organization by claiming wrong action taken<\/i>\u201d, and \u201c<i>exhausted members with communication<\/i>;\u201d all of which, frankly, question the mental acuity of its author.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In conclusion, the Resolution proposed: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<i>MOTION: Based on information outlined in this resolution which was also distributed to the membership in hard copy for this meeting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I, Darrell Shockley, as a voting member of the LPCRCC and member of the Bylaws committee make a MOTION to request the Executive Committee of the LPCRCC to formally censure Secretary Hope Scheppelman.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the meeting continued, discussion ranged from why this dismissal was taking place ninety days before a national election, more than one accusation of Scheppelman being a traitor and a Democratic plant, one call for the resignation of Chair Peters, some PCP members spoke with heated rancor as Scheppelman was determined to be \u2018<i>part of the radical right<\/i>\u201d as others exhibited appalling, unprofessional conduct in what surely had been a colossal waste of time and energy. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the conclusion of the meeting, Chair Peters announced he would be hiring an investigator to scrutinize Scheppelman\u2019s behavior to determine if any illegal conduct had occurred and that he would personally assume responsibility to pay the investigator.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"ydp5978e87bs3\"><i>Renee Parsons\u00a0served on the ACLU\u2019s Florida State Board of Directors and as president of the ACLU Treasure Coast Chapter.
