The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has grounds to hear a complaint against CBS for deceptively editing an interview with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, a Republican-appointed commissioner has said.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, the broadcaster aired two different answers by Harris to the same question, one in a preview and the other in the actual \u201860 Minutes\u2019 show, prompting accusations of misleading editing to make the sitting vice-president sound more coherent than she actually was.<\/p>\n
The Center for American Rights (CAR) filed a complaint to the FCC on Wednesday, accusing the network of\u00a0\u201cdeliberate news distortion,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which would be an actionable offense under the regulator\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat this claim is alleging is that an act of distortion took place,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Commissioner Nathan Simington told Fox News Digital on Friday. The FCC has\u00a0\u201ccertainly contemplated the possibility of distortionary reporting taking place via splicing,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he explained, noting that in a previous proceeding the commissioners\u00a0\u201cgave the example of substituting a yes answer to one question or a no answer to an entirely different question.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Simington reminded the audience that the FCC can\u2019t regulate what can be said or written, given that the US has the First Amendment to the Constitution that protects freedom of speech and the press. However, CBS could still find itself in trouble for\u00a0\u201cabuse of public trust,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI think everyone agrees that deliberately misleading the public is a bad idea,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the commissioner said, adding that if CBS did so, Americans should be upset,\u00a0\u201cbecause people go to the news in order to learn about things that they would never be able to learn about themselves. In other words, going to the news is an act of extending trust.
