(Netflix via AP) ** FILE **<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>By Valerie Richardson &#8211; The Washington Times<\/p>\n<p>The growing uproar over \u201cCuties\u201d threatens to engulf the Obamas as they come under pressure to use their influence at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0to pull the provocative French film accused of glorifying the sexualization of girls.<\/p>\n<p>Critics on the right have called on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0producers Barack and Michelle Obama to condemn \u201cCuties,\u201d a French film released on the streaming service Sept. 9 that already has prompted calls by Republicans for a Justice Department investigation into possible child-pornography violations.<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist didn\u2019t mince words in a Monday article by Fox News contributor Rachel Campos-Duffy headlined, \u201cMichelle Obama is Complicit in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> Child Porn Film \u2018Cuties.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time the left has declared that \u2018silence is violence,\u2019 Michelle Obama\u2019s silence on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u2019s controversial movie \u2018Cuties\u2019 has not gone unnoticed,\u201d read the op-ed, co-written with Evita Duffy. \u201cIt is also undermining her brand as \u2018America\u2019s mom\u2019 and chief defender of female empowerment across the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Obamas certainly have the connections: Last year they signed a reported $50 million production deal with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>. What\u2019s more, the streaming media company\u2019s board includes former Obama National Security Advisor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/susan-e-rice\/\">Susan E. Rice<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0co-CEO Ted Sarandos, a 2012 Obama campaign bundler whose wife, Nicole Avant, served in the Obama administration as ambassador to the Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Times reached out to the Obamas for comment but did not receive a reply.<\/p>\n<p>Radio talk-show host Larry O\u2019Connor said the Obamas \u201care enriched by the company that has presented this trash to the world,\u201d but they \u201crefuse to say anything \u2026 anything at all about this horrible issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are the tip of the spear in demanding that every day Americans disrupt their own lives and their family harmony on the most divisive and controversial political topics,\u201d Mr. O\u2019Connor said Friday in an op-ed on Townhall.com. \u201cYet, on this fundamental, non-controversial and unifying idea that children should be protected and sexual exploitation of minors should be universally condemned, they can\u2019t say a word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0saw its stock price drop for the fifth day Monday as #CancelNetflix continued to roar on social media, spurred by former subscribers posting their cancellation receipts in a campaign to compel the service to remove the film.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1304604477681537025&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtontimes.com%2Fnews%2F2020%2Fsep%2F14%2Fnetflix-cuties-film-child-porn-uproar-ensnares-oba%2F&amp;siteScreenName=washtimes&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=219d021%3A1598982042171&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1304604477681537025\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCuties\u201d also faces opposition in Congress. Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, asked Attorney General William Barr to investigate whether\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0has \u201cviolated any federal laws against the production and distribution of child pornography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tom Cotton, Arkansas Republican, and Rep. Jim Banks, Indiana Republican, on Friday called on the Justice Department to prosecute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0for trafficking in child pornography, while Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri Republican, sent a letter to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0CEO Reed Hastings asking him about the \u201cexploitation of child actors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few Democrats have joined the outcry, notably Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who tweeted Friday that she had canceled her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0subscription over \u201cCuties,\u201d which she described as \u201cchild porn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christine Pelosi, daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a former San Francisco assistant district attorney, tweeted that the film \u201chypersexualizes girls my daughter\u2019s age no doubt to the delight of pedophiles like the ones I prosecuted. Cancel this, apologize, work with experts to heal your harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obamas could \u2018stop this in its tracks\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0has defended the coming-of-age film, which centers on a French-Sengalese girl named Amy who \u201cstarts to rebel against her conservative family\u2019s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Cuties\u2019 is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,\u201d a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0spokesperson said in an email. \u201cIt\u2019s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up \u2014 and we\u2019d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Filmmaker Maimouna Doucoure won the directing award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and the critical reviews have been mostly positive. In what may be one of the most skewed Rotten Tomatoes ratings ever, the film received a glowing 88% score from critics and a desultory 3% score from audiences.<\/p>\n<p>In a Monday interview on Medium, Ms. Dourcoure urged those offended by the movie poster released last month to watch the film, predicting they would be surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping that these people will watch the movie now that it\u2019s out,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m eager to see their reaction when they realize that we\u2019re both on the same side of this fight against young children\u2019s hypersexualization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New Yorker\u2019s Richard Brody said \u201cCuties\u201d had become \u201cthe target of a right-wing campaign,\u201d while the Verge\u2019s Julia Alexander blamed a \u201cQAnon conspiracy theory\u201d in an article retweeted by Mr. Hastings.<\/p>\n<p>Tufts University professor Daniel W. Drezner on Monday accused Mr. Cruz of stoking the \u201chysteria\u201d by railing against the movie without having seen it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe film is mostly a cautionary tale about what happens when preteen girls lack parental authority figures and instead seek approval from social media likes,\u201d Mr. Drezner said in the Washington Post op-ed. \u201cIn other words, \u2018Cuties\u2019 is a film with a rather conservative message. By my plain-language reading of U.S. law, it does not come remotely close to the \u2018child pornography\u2019 label.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not buying the \u201ccautionary tale\u201d explanation was Live Action\u2019s Lila Rose, who tweeted, \u201cYou don\u2019t fight child exploitation by exploiting children. You don\u2019t stop child pornography by creating, selling and distributing child pornography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the IMDb \u201cParents Guide,\u201d the movie received a \u201csevere\u201d rating for \u201csex &amp; nudity,\u201d citing \u201cFrequent scenes of 11 yr old girls dancing lewdly where the camera pans in and zooms in on the children\u2019s buttocks and midsections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original IMDb description, however, said that \u201cone of the female child dancers lifts up her top to fully display her bare breast,\u201d in a screenshot captured by the Blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Drezner downplayed the shot, calling it \u201ca blink-and-you\u2019ll-miss-it scene in which the film\u2019s protagonists are watching video of a rival, older dance troupe in which one of the dancers exposes one breast. It happens too fast for anything to be sexualized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the film\u2019s release, there was a dust-up its poster, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0removed, but the movie featuring close-ups of scantily clad girls twerking and writhing makes the poster look tame, according to conservative pundit Tammy Bruce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said that the poster that caused outrage didn\u2019t reflect the film. They were right. The film is worse. It is beyond what we would have imagined,\u201d said Ms. Bruce on Fox\u2019s \u201cTucker Carlson Tonight.\u201d \u201cThe fact is, it is awful. It is the exploitation of children.
