Netflix indicted by Texas grand jury for \u2018Cuties\u2019 film<\/h1>\n

Netflix<\/a>\u00a0has been\u00a0indicted<\/a>\u00a0on a criminal charge that alleges\u00a0the\u00a0streaming<\/a> giant promotes \u201clewd visual material\u201d of a child.The lawsuit centers\u00a0on the release of the French\u00a0film<\/a>\u00a0\u201cCuties\u201d that has been mired by controversy since its release last month.<\/p>\n

A Tyler County,\u00a0Texas<\/a>\u00a0grand jury moved to return an indictment against Netflix on Sept. 23, Fox News confirmed on Tuesday via court documents.<\/p>\n

The complaint alleges Netflix \u201cknowingly\u201d promoted visual material which \u201cdepicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age at the time the visual material was created, which appeals to the prurient interest in sex, and has no serious, literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netflix has previously\u00a0defended the film in statements\u00a0to Fox News,\u00a0calling the project “a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The media giant doubled down on Tuesday. “Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,\u201d a spokesperson for Netflix told Fox News. \u201cThis charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, \u201cCuties\u201d writer and director, French-Senegalese filmmaker\u00a0Ma\u00efmouna Doucour\u00e9<\/a>, also previously\u00a0penned an op-ed\u00a0<\/a>for the Washington Post. In it, she wrote, \u201cWe, as adults, have not given children the tools to grow up healthy in our society.”<\/p>\n

The film tells\u00a0the coming-of-age story of an 11-year-old Senegalese girl as she discovers her maturing self, all while looking for acceptance in her religious family and group of young dancers she hopes to befriend.<\/p>\n
