That would represent a regression to the rate of 9.2 percent in 2017. Had the pandemic not convulsed the globe, the poverty rate was expected to drop to 7.9 percent in 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?creatorScreenName=RT_com&amp;dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1313901991521923072&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fbusiness%2F502964-covid-pandemic-extreme-poverty%2F&amp;siteScreenName=RT_com&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1313901991521923072\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cThe pandemic and global recession may cause over 1.4 percent of the world\u2019s population to fall into extreme poverty,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0World Bank Group President David Malpass.\u00a0<em>\u201cIn order to reverse this serious setback to development progress and poverty reduction, countries will need to prepare for a different economy post-Covid, by allowing capital, labor, skills, and innovation to move into new businesses and sectors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The World Bank estimates that\u00a0by 2030,\u00a0the global poverty rate could\u00a0be about\u00a0seven percent.<\/p>\n<p>While less than a tenth of the world\u2019s population lives on less than $1.90 a day, close to a quarter of the population lives on less than $3.20 a day, and more than 40 percent of the world\u2019s population (almost 3.3 billion people) live on less than $5.50 a day.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe current moment of crisis is\u00a0extraordinary.\u00a0No prior disease has become a global threat so quickly as Covid-19.\u00a0Never\u00a0have the world\u2019s poorest people resided so disproportionately in conflict-affected territories and countries.
