{"id":33201,"date":"2020-10-24T17:56:43","date_gmt":"2020-10-24T21:56:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=33201"},"modified":"2020-10-24T17:56:43","modified_gmt":"2020-10-24T21:56:43","slug":"pope-francis-condemned-by-catholic-hierarchy-for-endorsing-same-sex-unions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=33201","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis Condemned by Catholic Hierarchy for Endorsing Same-Sex Unions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Catholic leaders condemn Pope Francis\u2019 endorsement of same-sex unions<\/h1>\n<p>By Lia Eustachewich<br \/>\nNew York Post<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" height=\"348\" width=\"618\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"\/\/players.brightcove.net\/4137224153001\/6aIMRO3kiI_default\/index.html?videoId=6204243309001\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/21\/pope-francis-calls-for-civil-union-laws-for-same-sex-couples\/\">support for same-sex unions<\/a>\u00a0is being openly criticized by several Roman Catholic leaders in America \u2014 who say his recently revealed pro-gay remarks cause \u201cconfusion and error\u201d and fly in the face of church teachings.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Raymond Burke, a frequent critic of Francis, said the pope\u2019s comments should be \u201crightly interpreted as simple private opinions of the person who made them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch declarations generate great bewilderment and cause confusion and error among Catholic faithful,\u201d Burke, a member of the Vatican\u2019s highest court, said in a statement Thursday on his website.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Francis\u2019 views were contrary to Catholic teachings.<\/p>\n<p>The pontiff, 83, endorsed civil unions for same-sex couples in a 2019 interview with Mexican broadcaster Televisa. The never-before-seen clip was aired in the new documentary \u201cFrancesco,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-documentary-civil-unions\/2020\/10\/22\/b99a07d6-146d-11eb-a258-614acf2b906d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Washington Post reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHomosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. However, the legalization of their civil unions, which seek to simulate holy matrimony, is not admissible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, went even further, calling the pope\u2019s gay support \u201cconfusing and very dangerous,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/news\/people\/texas-bishop-says-francis-support-civil-unions-dangerous-and-papacy-lacks-clarity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the National Catholic Reporter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe church is weak.
