FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – Indiana Third District U.S. Rep. Jim Banks is among several dozen Republican congressmen seeking a Department of Justice probe into “widespread reports of (election) irregularities.”<\/p>\n
The group authored a letter addressed to Attorney General William Barr. Banks posted it in a tweet on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The tweet reads:<\/p>\n
“I\u2019ve joined 38 of my colleagues in writing a letter to AG Bill Barr requesting he investigate claims of voter fraud and make sure only all legal votes are counted in this election.<\/p>\n
“The American people need to have confidence that the outcome of this election is legitimate!!”<\/p>\n
Pres. Donald Trump has repeatedly alleged massive fraud, costing him reelection. He has not provided evidence supporting those claims.<\/p>\n
Vote tabulation continued in many states on Saturday, including several where Trump trails Joe Biden by slim amounts.<\/p>\n
Republican leaders have offered a mixed response. Some, like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, are publicly defending his claims, while others, like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, are trying to tow a middle ground.<\/p>\n
McConnell crafted a public message about Trump’s allegations that respects the concerns of the president and his ardent supporters but doesn’t back their nebulous charges of election fraud.<\/p>\n
On Friday, McConnell refused to say anything else besides his statement.<\/p>\n
