As a number of prominent journalists migrate to the publishing platform Substack, a wave of mainstream media hate for its lack of ‘gatekeeping’ is swelling \u2013 all in the name of \u2018equity\u2019 and fighting \u2018disinformation,\u2019 of course.<\/p>\n
Substack was founded in 2018, as a platform that makes it simple for a writer to make money from subscriptions. This solved the problem of monetizing blogging, which had forced many prominent bloggers into the arms of corporate or venture capital-funded outlets over the past decade. More importantly, it guaranteed the writers editorial freedom \u2013 a rapidly vanishing quality in mainstream journalism.<\/p>\n
Matt Taibbi<\/a>\u00a0left Rolling Stone for Substack in April.\u00a0Andrew Sullivan<\/a>\u00a0left the New York Times in September. Censorship drove Glenn Greenwald to\u00a0resign<\/a>\u00a0from The Intercept, which he co-founded, at the end of October. Last week, Vox co-founder\u00a0Matt Yglesias<\/a>\u00a0left as well \u2013 not due to censorship, he says.<\/p>\n To the surprise of precisely no one, Substack suddenly found itself under attack for not being woke enough. Apparently, it was racist, per liberal environmentalist Emily Atkin, who said\u00a0\u201cwhite people do way way way better\u201d<\/em>\u00a0on the platform and people should\u00a0\u201cfigure out how to make it not that way.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
