This solved the problem of monetizing blogging, which had forced many prominent bloggers into the arms of corporate or venture capital-funded outlets over the past decade. More importantly, it guaranteed the writers editorial freedom \u2013 a rapidly vanishing quality in mainstream journalism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/taibbi.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Taibbi<\/a>\u00a0left Rolling Stone for Substack in April.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Sullivan<\/a>\u00a0left the New York Times in September. Censorship drove Glenn Greenwald to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/504967-greenwald-resignation-intercept-biden-censorship\/\">resign<\/a>\u00a0from The Intercept, which he co-founded, at the end of October. Last week, Vox co-founder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattyglesias\/status\/1327279949569536002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Yglesias<\/a>\u00a0left as well \u2013 not due to censorship, he says.<\/p>\n<p>To the surprise of precisely no one, Substack suddenly found itself under attack for not being woke enough. Apparently, it was racist, per liberal environmentalist Emily Atkin, who said\u00a0<em>\u201cwhite people do way way way better\u201d<\/em>\u00a0on the platform and people should\u00a0<em>\u201cfigure out how to make it not that way.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Atkin&#8217;s comments seemed to be referring to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/special_report\/substackerati.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diatribe<\/a>\u00a0in the Columbia Journalism Review by Brooklyn-based freelancer Clio Chang, who argued that Substack is perpetuating\u00a0<em>\u201cprejudiced systems\u201d<\/em>\u00a0that disadvantage\u00a0<em>\u201cpeople who are nonwhite or non-elite.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chang\u2019s evidence for this was that people like Greenwald, Yglesias, Taibbi or Sullivan were more prominent and popular on the platform than a former BuzzFeed\u00a0<em>\u201cbeauty writer covering race, identity, diversity, and intersectional representation for underrepresented audiences\u201d<\/em>\u00a0who now writes\u00a0<em>\u201cCoronavirus News for Black Folks.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>How dare Substack organize their leaderboards by audience and revenue metrics, without putting its thumb on the scale? After all,\u00a0<em>\u201cadherence to neutrality only enforces existing power structures,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Chang lamented.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?creatorScreenName=RT_com&amp;dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1328356736793800707&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fop-ed%2F507018-substack-greenwald-mainstream-gatekeepeers%2F&amp;siteScreenName=RT_com&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1328356736793800707\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The racial and\u00a0<em>\u201csocial justice\u201d<\/em>\u00a0angle of the attack on Substack suggests there\u2019s more to it than what computer scientist Paul Graham\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paulg\/status\/1328396808201121793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">described<\/a>\u00a0as the tendency of successful start-ups that work with consumers to automatically attract\u00a0<em>\u201chaters.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on another Substack attack by a New York Times writer last week, Greenwald offers an explanation that seems more pertinent: mainstream journalists\u00a0<em>\u201chate and resent Substack, because it provides the ability of writers and journalists to be heard and to reach an audience without having to submit to their monopolistic structures and discourse controls.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCorporate journalists despise independence,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Greenwald tweeted, adding\u00a0<em>\u201cThe more free discourse emerges, the more they\u2019ll malign it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?creatorScreenName=RT_com&amp;dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-1&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1328681587446312960&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fop-ed%2F507018-substack-greenwald-mainstream-gatekeepeers%2F&amp;siteScreenName=RT_com&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1328681587446312960\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The existence of an independent platform endangers their efforts to control public discourse, Greenwald argued. The American left used to believe that corporate media are spreading disinformation and deceiving the public, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1328742879288840193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reminded<\/a>\u00a0his audience, only to completely turn around and insist that MSNBC and CNN are fighting\u00a0<em>\u201cdisinformation\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and keeping Americans\u00a0<em>\u201csafe from propaganda.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey are institutionalists &amp; authoritarians,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0begging for gatekeepers and discourse regulators, Greenwald\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1328745505480962048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to argue with that, when just about every mainstream outlet these days has at least one\u00a0<em>\u201creporter\u201d<\/em>\u00a0whose sole mission is to finger\u00a0<em>\u201chate figures\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and pressure social media platforms to kick them off. Or when former President Barack Obama himself declares the internet\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/11\/16\/21570072\/obama-internet-threat-democracy-facebook-fox-atlantic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cthe single biggest threat to our democracy,<\/a>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0because Americans can choose the\u00a0<em>\u201cdistorted reality\u201d<\/em>\u00a0of Facebook and Fox News instead of \u201ca shared set of facts,\u201d as he said in an interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/11\/why-obama-fears-for-our-democracy\/617087\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Atlantic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-2\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?creatorScreenName=RT_com&amp;dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-2&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1328435192084787206&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fop-ed%2F507018-substack-greenwald-mainstream-gatekeepeers%2F&amp;siteScreenName=RT_com&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1328435192084787206\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The trouble with Obama, the Democrats and the mainstream press that\u2019s openly allied with them calling for\u00a0<em>\u201cfacts\u201d<\/em>\u00a0is that they\u2019ve systematically denied them for the past four years. Instead, they peddled a completely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/488488-biggest-lies-of-russiagate\/\">baseless conspiracy theory<\/a>\u00a0about Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<em>\u201ccollusion\u201d<\/em>\u00a0with Russia and Moscow\u2019s\u00a0<em>\u201cmeddling\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in US elections.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that any mention of it has miraculously disappeared the second they claimed to have won the presidency \u2013 which they also declared the most secure and problem-free election in history, just in case you had any qualms. Case closed, shut up and obey \u2013 what are you, a bigot?<\/p>\n<p>These are the same people who, when confronted with their actual words, love to explain that they\u00a0<em>\u201creally meant\u201d<\/em>\u00a0something else entirely. So let\u2019s turn the tables: when they say\u00a0<em>\u201cfacts,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0what they really mean is accepting their Narrative without questioning or objections.
