Actually coming from a communist country I can say this is not about communism\u2026. even China is no longer communist \u2026 that model failed long ago. Ascendancy to power means primarily the establishment of officially recognised headquarters for the movement and acquisition of a kind of laboratory in which to carry out the experiment with or rather against reality, the experiment in organising a people for ultimate purposes which disregard individuality as well as nationality,<\/strong> under conditions which are admittedly not perfect but are sufficient for important partial results.<\/p>\n

Totalitarianism in power uses the state administration for its long-range goal of world conquest and for the direction of the branches of the movement; it establishes the secret police as the executors and guardians of its domestic experiment in constantly transforming reality into fiction; and it finally erects concentration camps as special laboratories to carry through its experiment in total domination.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Hannah Arendt the nature of totalitarianism is the \u201ccombination\u201d of \u201cits essence of terror and its principle of logicality\u201d (see \u201cOn the Nature of Totalitarianism<\/a>\u201c). As \u201cessence\u201d terror must be total, more than a means of suppressing opposition, more than an extreme or insane vindictiveness. Total terror<\/strong> is, in its own way, rational: it replaces, literally takes the place of, the role played by positive laws in constitutional governments. But the result is neither lawless anarchy, the war of all against all, nor the tyrannical abrogation of law.<\/p>\n

Arendt pointed out that just as a government of laws would become \u201cperfect\u201d in the absence of transgressions, so terror<\/strong> \u201crules supreme when nobody any longer stands in its way\u201d<\/em> (see The Origins of Totalitarianism<\/a><\/em> chapter 12). Just as positive laws in a constitutional government seek to \u201ctranslate and realize\u201d higher transcendent laws, such as God\u2019s commandments or natural law, so totalitarian terror \u201cis designed to translate into reality the law of movement of history or nature,\u201d not in a limited body politic, but throughout mankind.<\/p>\n

So long as totalitarianism exists in a non-totalitarian world, however, it needs the processes of logical or dialectical deduction to coerce the human mind into \u201cimitating\u201d and becoming \u201cintegrated\u201d into the \u201csuprahuman\u201d forces of nature and history.<\/em><\/p>\n

In other words, the logic of the idea of an ideology forces the mind to move as inevitably as natural and historical processes themselves move, and against this movement \u201cnothing stands but the great capacity of men\u201d to interrupt those processes by starting \u201csomething new.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not the political isolation that always prevents action, however, but the loneliness of socially uprooted, \u201csuperfluous\u201d human beings, their loss of common sense, the sense of community and communication, which attracts them to logical explanations of all that has happened, is happening, and ever will happen.<\/p>\n

Thereby relieved of any responsibility for the course of the world, world-alienated masses are unwittingly, beneath the crust of their lives, prepared for totalitarian organization and, ultimately, domination.<\/em><\/p>\n

Arendt concluded that Hitler and Stalin discovered that the eradication of the unpredictability of human affairs, of human freedom, and of human nature itself is possible in \u201cthe true central institution of totalitarian organizational power,\u201d the concentration camp.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In concentration camps the combination of the practice of terror with the principle of logicality, which is the nature of totalitarianism, \u201cresolves\u201d the conflict in constitutional governments between legality and justice by ridding human beings of individual consciences <\/strong>and making them embodiments of the laws governing the motion of nature and history.<\/p>\n

Terror and logicality welded together equip totalitarian regimes with unprecedented power to dominate human beings. How totalitarian systems accomplish their inversion of political life, above all how they set about destroying human conscience and the plurality of unique human individuals<\/em>, staggers the imagination and confounds the faculty of understanding.<\/p>\n
