However, thousands of children have been exempted from the shots, with parents citing religious beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>There was an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nj1015.com\/nj-close-to-ending-religious-exemptions-for-vaccines\/\">attempt last year<\/a>\u00a0by lawmakers to eliminate such exemptions and mandate the vaccinations across the board, but it failed when angry parents stormed the statehouse:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wE3gKCXuqwg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>While New Jersey officials have stopped short of saying they will force everyone to get the vaccine, Governor Phil Murphy\u00a0has signed an executive order that will see everyone who does get it automatically enrolled into a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/coronavirus\/2020\/12\/nj-orders-change-to-streamline-covid-19-vaccine-shots-tracking-when-shots-arrive.html\">\u2018New Jersey Immunization Information System\u2019<\/a>\u00a0, a move that some have seen as a way of coercing people to take the shot.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters, Sue Collins, co-founder of the New Jersey Coalition for Vaccine Choice said \u201cPutting the cart before the horse and saying when it\u2019s available everyone has to get it does not build trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo medical procedure should ever be mandated for anyone \u2014 especially something so new, with so many unknowns and no long-term knowledge at all,\u201d Collins added.<\/p>\n<p>Pushing back against the creep toward mandating the vaccine in the state, Republican Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger, has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nj1015.com\/proposed-nj-law-blocks-government-from-mandating-covid-vaccine\/\">sponsored a bill<\/a>\u00a0to prevent it from becoming compulsory.<\/p>\n<p>While he says he is not anti-vaccine, Scharfenberger says he cannot support mandating medication, and is responding to the concerns of constituents.<\/p>\n<p>The developments in New Jersey come after a State Assemblymember in New York\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/10\/ny-lawmaker-introduces-bill-to-make-vaccination-mandatory\/\">introduced legislation that would make it compulsory for residents to get vaccinated<\/a>\u00a0against coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Linda Rosenthal said she introduced the bill because \u201cthere has been a \u201cconcerning uptick in dangerous anti-science, anti-vax rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As soon as the FDA approves the vaccine for children, there will likely be a torrent of states moving to add it to the compulsory vaccination list for school kids.
